the demat noise was always used; however the Ship used to land silently until around the War Machines, after which the demat noise was used to signify landings as well. The first landing FX as is used nowadays happened as a one-off in the Krotons when the TARDIS uses it's HADS, and was used occasionally from then on to signify "different" materialisations (eg: the end of The Invasion when it becomes visible again) until Pertwee's time, when it be came almost standard, although sometimes it retained an extra "vworp", as in "Planet of the Spiders". The noise continued to be altered almost from story to story, with Logopolis being the last time it missed off the end of the landing (1st landing, next to the Police Box). After that the noise became almost standard with just the three or four vworps (although the last few McCoy Classic seasons used only the last two vworps by and large), notable exceptions being when others tried tofly the Ship, like Adric piloting it in the Visitation.
The New Series has reinstated a much longer TARDIS materialisation noise mostly, which gives a better effect.
