Mike Verta's s18 TY-J

Yes but they're incomplete. Missing the specific positions of the mounting holes for the plate and for the handle to the plate, for the thickness of the handle attachments, the radii of the fillets, the draft angles of the handle attachments, etc.

Ah, not just measurements then, but measurements in every dimension and every detail.  ;)

Look what the factory sent me today. Just shy of 6 years since the last time they sent such a photo.2025_FRESNEL.jpg

This time, however, once I receive it I'm going to have it vapor polished to get it absolutely optically clear and free of even the slightest sanding marks.

This is the first full-scale replacement part produced since I lost the Mk. I. I will not be beaten; I simply will not be beaten.

Just revisiting this for the 1-millionth time. This was something I had never fully settled on while working on V.1. I am absolutely sure the signs were made both ways - with paint on the front surface, and with the paint on the back surface. In this shot, it appears to actually be two layers of material: One with the blue strip/letter cutouts on the front (it would not be possible to repaint if the paint was on the back surface), and then a second translucent sheet in front (it's cracked at the bottom). I think this is to protect the main sign from damage.

By contrast, this is definitely just painted on the front surface:

Almost without exception, when seen at grazing angles, the outermost surface is uniform: a single, unbroken specular/reflection, which is not the case when paint with cutouts is the outermost surface. I've done tons of tests here with various thicknesses of acrylic, frosted, sanded, 2447... my next test is basically a re-creation of the top photo - painted on the front surface of 2447 with P95 matte surface, and then covered by a 1/16" outer layer of non-glare acrylic. Will post once it's finished.

I took that picture years ago, when the box was on display at the original iteration of the Experience at Earls Court.

Im pretty sure that the signage in that picture is not the original. The box had several replacement signs fitted with different lettering styles between Survival and when Timerotor refurbished it for The Experience. (You can see the box with several different sign styles from pictures taken when it was on display at TVC, as well as when it was used in Curse of Fatal Death etc).

It may well be that the signs in the above picture were commissioned for the Experience refurb, Timerotor may be able to confirm this…

From memory, those signs were definitely vinyl sheets stuck on acyrilc backing, with the letters cut out, with the vinyl dirtied down appropriately. (It was 15 years ago now, so the memory might be cheating a little). I’ve also held in my sweaty hand a lintle sign that the owner proports was screen used in episode 1 of Mindwarp. That sign was also vinyl with the lettering crudely cut out with a blade. This sign had telltale markings that the owner used to identify it as the Mindwarp prop, so I’ve no reason to doubt him…

I’m pretty sure I have a large number of other photos of the refurbed prop I’ve taken over years on my hard drive that show the signs in detail. I’ll have to have a look at some point.

Thanks for the confirm on the Experience box! I remain fixated on Season 18/19 for my build during which the signs overwhelmingly appear to exhibit the "painted on the back" character, but I've just never had it confirmed.

when you look at the behind the scenes pictures for season 18, in production order, those signs change all the time! Considering how new the box was at that point it’s amazing how much the prop got damaged in its first few stories…
