Logopolis & Castrovalva: Wandering the corridors of the TARDIS

It's been a frustrating few days, with not much progress. I discovered that at some point Blender created copies of the cloister room walls and overlaid them on the originals, but slightly displaced and these have taken a while to correct.

Then I clicked to render and for some reason the walls have now turned black.
It's a nice view, so I'm posting it anyway.

Sorted out the black walls and I've started adding some of the dangling ivy tendrils. At the moment I'm tracing the major ones I can see in photos, so I get a feel for them before having to deal with the harder-to-see bits.

Not massively different, but a few more tendrils.

I realized looking at this render, that I've yet to decide on what sort of ceiling the cloister room should have. In the novelization of Logopolis, the ceiling looks like the sky, because the room is supposed to appear like it's an outdoor area, but I don't think that would fit with the much more moody cloister room depicted on TV. I don't think the standard white ceiling tiles would be the best choice, so will have to experiment.

Perhaps the TVM's cloister room might provide some inspiration? I can imagine a dome through which we can see an holographic sky. Sometimes it could be simulating a warm sunny day, other times a moody and dramatic night sky or some intergalactic vista.

There was also a DWM 6th Doctor comic strip, Up Above the Gods, that showed the cloister room ceiling. Interestingly not entirely dissimilar from the TVM with its vaulted beams, though it predates it.

And in case you were wondering, yes, that really is Davros in the TARDIS; Up Above the Gods is a sort of "interlude" that takes place during the much better known strip Emperor of the Daleks, which covers what happened to Davros between Revelation of the Daleks and Remembrance of the Daleks.

Some inspiration also from real cloisters.

Interesting stuff! It seems to be a repeated idea that there should be a circular (or at least curved) dome in the centre of the ceiling. I did try this briefly in the past, but couldn't make it work well with a square of arches as there were always gaps or overlaps. If I actually create cloisters, rather than the arched walls being freestanding like the walls of an old castle, then that could solve the problem as you wouldn't be able to see the edges of the dome.

How ironic that this has a white ceiling, when I was thinking to get away from that! Given that the Dr has seen these cloisters in person in Shada, it does make them a leading candidate for the inspiration for his own. The cross-struts are definitely a feature I can incorporate, connecting from the trapezoid columns with the stone roundels to the arches making up the central quad.

OK, so I've gone the whole hog and put on a skydome and ceilings around the edge of the room.
I think the daylight/sky works well, but still need to think about the best ceiling appearance.

This is version 1 with grey ceilings to match the walls:

And version 2 with white ceilings:

A shot of the gap in the cloister walls in the broken corner. For the moment, I'm assuming the ceiling survived when the blocks fell down (assuming they were ever there).

The cloister room looks quite interesting from the outside now:

Almost looks like a building from Star Wars.

Just in case anyone was wondering what the view would be like lying on your back in the centre of the cloister room...

It will be interesting to see how different the feel of this is, once I've fully covered the arch walls with ivy.
