It could be a bit of vintage brass plumbing with a stopper added to one of the entry points for the pipework, and a machined lid added to the other entry point.
 
Returning to this prop for making reasons, its funny, these two hinges (marked in red in the below screenshot) are meant to be holding the line on - but their top halves are part of the lid, as it moves down as McCoy closes it. As per the screenshot, where its broken, the hinge is kept in place.

Not a very secure casket if you ask me...

I disagree, in your screenshot, the lid has fallen inside and the strap (for lack of a better word) is now over the top of the horizontal flat area. In the screenshot below, you can see the separation of them from the top. :)
