FRESNEL sources

Not a "Fresnel proper", but it does have the shape, and seems to still be available:
http://www.vermontlanterns.com/content/anchor-lamp-chimney-19

It's the largest of this lens (or "chimney" as they call it) they have available. The close-up image isn't the best for measurements, but they do answer questions about specifics rather quickly when you e-mail them. It's worth a shot, and for the price, you can't beat it until you find a proper Fresnel lens.

And if worse comes to worst, would it be possible to router a groove for your current lens to sit in? Or maybe router the outer edge of that circular part to reduce its diameter to your lens would fit over it? (The same for the above lens in the link, that is if it's a little larger than your current lens?)

Just a thought.

Dino.

It seems I may have had my lamp all along!

A long while ago, I saw this beautiful thing at TX Maxx on reduction. Its a glass candle holder, nautical style.

dddd.jpg

I measured it and its diameter is 7"! about the right size for a TARDIS lamp, but its height is 10" so I will be looking to either cut it shorter (its glass, eeek!) or sinking it into its roof placement. I realise its missing the typical bulbous shape in the middle to be a proper lamp, but it should give the same effect once atop a box.

Thought I'd share here just in case anyone else needs inspiration to find something similar.

I agree... glass? "Eeek!" Sink it into the housing. Glass-cutters aren't all that cheap, and trying to do it yourself could lead to a shattered lens, and that's not worth it. Sinking it into the housing definitely sounds like the best way to go, and it would look the same as it would if it was cut.

"Proper lamp"? Who can really define a "proper" TARDIS lamp when we've seen everything from a Met Box-style with the Fresnel lens to a plain frosted cylinder (even with nothing but a black cap on it), to a rotating blue police car-type lamp to a small anchor-style lamp inside a Met Box-style cover with struts (the Hudolin), to the Gardman of the Series 1-4 box to an Anchor-style lamp to a New Haven-style of the Series 5 on box...?

A "proper lamp" - I'd say it's anything you find appealing to your eye (and wallet) that you put on top of your TARDIS.

Thanks for that, David. It shows everyone yet another alternative to be on the watch for!

Here's a direct link:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/philips-massive-outdoor-lighting-newhaven-wall-lantern-rustic-aluminium-/121491269782?rmvSB=true

"Buy It Now" price: EUR 34.99 + EUR 15.00 shipping; item location, Cork, Ireland. (19 people watching the listing as of this post, with 6 of those lamps listed as available.)

Interesting, though: they list the US dollar conversion, yet still say in huge bold red lettering "Does not post to the United States".

Might want to stick to this listing instead, David, where they show the conversion to GBP:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Philips-Massive-Outdoor-Lighting-Newhaven-Wall-Lantern-Rustic-Aluminium-/121491269782
Same item, seller, location, and Euro price (and number available and people watching) - price: £25.02 + £10.73 shipping

I really want one of these, but live in the US - is it wrong to wonder if UK TARDISBuilders would consider helping out us in the US start a top-lamp smuggling system? ;)

This has been done before for lamps, door handles, locks, etc. Elvis, just ask for help with getting one, and to have someone who's willing to contact you via PM so you can work out the details. (This way the thread doesn't get clogged with that.) That's how I got my flower pots for the 2010 console room roundels a few years back. They weren't available to US buyers, so I asked for help, and got a couple of PMs offering assistance. (Now if I could only get about four of those "lenses" that go into the flower pots so I can complete the roundels, I'd be thrilled, but that's a story for another day... or maybe decade the way things are going.)

But yes; there is help across the pond for we Yanks that need something that isn't available over here, and all one need do is ask.

Hey guys. I know I haven't been posting here, but I am a regular over at the RPF. I would appreciate it if anyone here can help me with the purchase of one of these lanterns on ebay.

Please PM me and I'll write back.

Thanks in advance!

Spotted this lens In Goray harbour Jersey a wee bit big for a Tardis Build unless you build one to match the size.
That would be great

Wow! That would be a great lens of you were going for a "The Name of the Doctor"-sized TARDIS build! (In the early stages of TARDIS decay, that is; for a full-on TARDIS decay build you'd need a First Order-sized lens from a lighthouse!)

Though, not all TARDISes grow to gargantuan proportions when they die (like the original 'Lost In Space' Robot was doing in the Season 2 episode "Trip Through the Robot"... coincidence?). So maybe if someone really wanted a huge TARDIS shed, one that matched the size of that lens on the ship, one could say that particular TARDIS died and only grew so large. (After all, the almost-dead TARDIS was still "normal" sized outside in "Turn Left", and in "Parting of the Ways", the Doctor told Rose to just "let the TARDIS die", which he wouldn't have done if the Old Girl was really going to expand enough to fill Trafalgar Square, and then some - no one would be able to "ignore an old blue box gathering dust" of that size! :D)

I found these on Garrett Wade, but have not ordered yet.
http://www.garrettwade.com/brass-anchor-lamps-gp.html

The 9 inch one looks like the glass would be about 5 1/2 inches high and the proportions appear to be close.

It certainly looks like a nice one, and for a great price. You could always e-mail (or use their "Contact Us" link, whichever they have on the site) and ask them for more dimensions. Companies like that usually reply within a day or so. As long as the base of the lamp is close to 7 inches in diameter it should be a good fit. (Actually anything between 6 and 7 inches would work just fine.) The rest of the lamp looks spot on with those "struts" and the way the oil lamp burner can be removed leaves a nice round opening for a light to be put in. All that's needed then is to modify the cap, prime, paint the thing blue and Bob's your... erm... make that, Bingo: Jed's a millionaire! ;)

Great find, blaidd-drwg!

So I happened across a vendor who sells the clear  poly-carbonate lens I used on my TARDIS for  about $100
6 3/4 inches high.  Diameter Opening  5 1/8".  I got mine on via a ebay surplus listing for $30.  But if you insist on a real fresnel and like the idea that its plastic and won't break if it falls off the top of your TARDIS, take a look

The picture is green but the item is clear. (0261001CLR)

The frosted  one ( the one I used )  (0261001FRD )
http://www.archwaymarinelighting.com/advancedwebpage.aspx?cg=12&cd=5&SKUTYPE=202&SKUFLD=SKU&DM=1250&WEBID=817

I have never done business with this company.  Given the accuracy of their pictures they may be horrible to deal with. Or not.  They do have the cheapest retail price on the part and seem to stock both the clear and frosted lenses.  The parts seems more generally available now than when I was looking ( I found other vendors - but most come in at $110-130)   Or just start watching ebay for the above part numbers.

Karst and Purple got their Fresnel lens from Hardware Specialty Co. Their particular lens measurements: height 6" x diameter 6.5"

I spoke to a guy named Joe Wilson.  He was very helpful.   They have about 30-40 glass 360 degree Fresnel lens' left.  They have not sold the glass ones in quite some time.  There going for about $44.00 US.  I ordered one and will post a pic to make sure it is the real McCoy!

I have included the address, phone numbers, web site that Karst posted on my thread for those interested.

I followed up on this [trimmed down by me] post by Jon and picked up my new old stock lens at the store last Friday. The size is just listed as "large", and between boxes in the lot, there is a bit of variety, it would seem. I was assured the lens will fit a 6" lamp. Mine is 5.75 inches wide and 5.5 inches tall.

They still sell "large" Fresnel lenses at Hardware Specialty, and the price has not gone up. If you want an exact fit on the top and bottom blocks, I suggest you wait until you have the lens to build the holder.

Thank you, Jon, for helping me find a lens.

Be well,
Kathy

Intriguing.  If only I had an excuse to build another TARDIS...  I'd go for a Met box.  Then I'd need a much larger lens than the one on my Barachki.

What's tough is finding a scale model fresnel. You'd think the doll house hobby would yield one somewhere or that nautical miniatures would be loaded with them. Nope. I found a very tiny nautical one but my dad is lathing an acrylic one for me in 1:12.

I feel your pain.  That's one of those things where you go "I know I've seen them all over the place, I'll just go to X and pick one up."  Then you realize you *haven't* seen them anywhere.  Tempered glass Irish coffee mugs.  Little clear plastic beads.  A white cowboy hat...

I'd probably try drawer pulls if I were looking for 1:12 scale Fresnels.  And even then you probably would have to settle for "close enough".  Or, I dunno, cutting the neck off a plastic soda bottle and building the shape up with resin.  Good to hear that you've got an alternative plan.
