FRESNEL sources

Nice anchor lamp! A bit pricey at $269.90 AUD, but it does have a real (or very good replica) Fresnel lens in it. The lens size is a tad small - closer to the Newbery or Tom Yardley-Jones TARDIS (maybe even the Hudolin). With some mods to the top of it, though, it could serve well enough for a Series 5-6 TARDIS lamp; the shape for it is spot on (other than the top, hence making the modification to the top).

Great find, Sheedos!

I happened to be passing a pub relatively local to home and thought a pint was in order.

Anyhow imagine my surprise to find the carpark had these for lighting  :o

I haven't measured them or tried to get better pictures (yet) but they do look awfully close in size to a TYJ lens. Admittedly the dome isn't quite right but for anyone who didn't want to put too much effort into building a lamp, this might be perfect.

I've tried a few Google searches to try and find details of the manufacturer but pulled a blank so far.

The pub belongs to a chain called Hungry Horse.

Late one night, when no one is looking... with electrician's gloves on your hands and the appropriate tools in your little getaway bag... any one of these lights can be yours for the low, low price of a five-finger discount. (Serve yourself and save! ;D)

Only kidding! I don't condone stealing, or vandalism. Those are beautiful lights, though.

That is the style of glass I used for my first iteration of the TARDIS.  You can get the glass cheap at Home Depot and/or Lowes.  But once I got snobbier and more accurate, it is waaaay too small for a full-sized build.  That said, it is what I had for years.

I don't know how many would be interested in a fresnel-looking alternatives that are way less expensive. Found at Menards.com. 6" tall and opening at one end big enough for standard light bulb.

Not sure if this one has been posted before, but Menard's in the U.S. has a pretty decent-looking Fresnel-style lens available for under $30!

Interesting!  I had not seen this.  It looks like the ones Vermont Lantern sells (not an actual lens, just a glass shaped like the lens but with no thickness--still, the price is good and probably a little simpler than poring through the Vermont Lantern Website.

Looked, but did not see anything large enough. Nothing at Menards, and Vermont Lantern only had one model at 6" diameter and it was out of stock. Lowes fixture was also out of stock. Am looking for something more like 7.5 inch diameter at the base. 8.5 inch overall diameter.

The "jelly jar" type porch lights are inexpensive here in the US, but pretty small, bottom opening if used upside down is about 3.5" diameter. Another option is to fabricate a mold and pour a polyester resin copy. Since others have kindly posted a dimensioned contour.

Since I'm here, I'll chime in with a possible solution for people on a budget that are content with "good enough" accuracy:  Large jugs of cleaners like Pine-Sol.  Can't speak for Home Depot, but Lowe's has like, gallon jugs of household cleaners that are about the right size and bear at least a passing resemblance to a Fresnel chimney.  Sadly, the one that is the closest match (imo) is green plastic, but most of them are clear.
