Faversham Police Box

Does anyone know what this is?? It looks like a variation on a theme police box type styley but I can't be sure that it isn't just a security hut. Thoughts and opinions please!!!!

Incidentally sorry the picture's a bit large - can't get the hang of this resizing lark. Bit of help there wouldn't go amiss!!

Modified picture size - Purple

It's at a place called Faversham Creek, supposedly it is a police box, but I've no idea as to where it originated

It's been sitting there for donkeys yonks - I wasn't sure if it could be a police box because of the immense regional variation and I would have thought that any boxes in Fav would have been Metropolitan ones. A mystery.....

Hmm... I've seen it described both as a Tardis / police box and as a 'police type security box.' It does look a forbidding sort of thing, but maybe that's just because of the colour it's been painted.

Has it got a telephone door anywhere, or one of those Ericsson speaker-phone things, as a 'police public call box' would have? And what's it made of? It looks cast, which would imply that several at least were made.

Any chance of a picture of the 'hidden' sides?

That said Ironage, I still haven't found the phone panel in the Scarborogh police box!

Fair point (or: 'it's a fair cop'). I suppose it all depends how you define a police box. Is a brick-built shelter used by military police a 'police box'? ...How about a railway police or traffic police signal box? ...Am I just wittering on irrelevantly now?

The next time I'm down that way I'll take some more pics - it has a door on the side you can't see, oddly painted black. Couldn't see a phone panel or any evidence of sign boxes and from what I could tell it looked like what should have been the lamp housing had always been a concrete ball. Still, if it is a police box that will make my year to think there's one in my town!!!

Incidentally, I was with some friends the other night and they told me there was a police box in Godshill on the Isle of Wight!! They didn't say what sort or anything but it wasn't a police post (I found that much out) so has anybody else heard of this???

There were no Police Boxes on the Isle of Wight when I lived there for 27 years, though rather mysteriously, there was a red Police Box outside the fire station in Newport for one afternoon and I never got to the bottom of that one, my family saw it - as did my mates.... it was there at lunch time, but not there at tea time!  Wonder where it went... maybe it really was the TARDIS... on an off day.

There could be a replica though, next time I'm there, I'll have a look.  Godshill isn't that big a place.

I think I know (roughly) what this one is - it's some sort of very old cast-iron box to do with early street lighting. It looks very police-box-ish but says something about an electrical company on one side of it.

[edit:] But - see below...

i've just taken some pics of the Faversham Creek box - i'll post them tomorrow while I'm at work. Tried logging on to photobucket on my phone and pasting the pics across but it didn't work - so watch this space!!!

As promised, more piccys

Again, sorry the pics are so large. Can someone please tell me how to resize them???

Hooray! nice pictures, AND - what's that to the left of the door, just under the window? Looks like a panel that's deeper than the others, and could have been made to house an external telephone... Have you a close-up of this, by any chance?

Fab! and if the door's open, perhaps you could look for clues within... And was there a shelf/desk on the left inside, or is the inside as empty as it looks in the pictures?

I'd like to think that it had an exernal telephone - it looks so telephone-box-y, like a cross between the Tardis and a red kiosk... Looks like it's in nice condition too.

About the Isle of Wight electric-thing-that-looks-like-a-police-box... is this it?
