Bristol Police Box

Thanks guys

The archive made copies of everything in the file and sent them to me for an hourly rate.

I don’t know where the photos are from they are glass photographic plates in envelopes with “police box plate” hand written on them. They have obviously had some hand touch up work on them.

It looks like Bristol may have had up to 24 boxes. I have a list of possible locations of the additional ones from the documents.

They started removing the boxes between 1944 and the late 1950s due to decaying struts supporting the concrete roofs. These seem to have been generally replaced with PTPs though it seems the were actively considering brick section boxes in 1955.

search for Bristol then locate sea mills on map then double click then left hand column shows amongst others

How did you find the original picture ?

Thank you

Picture was posted on the Sea Mills Facebook group in Jan. I have had it for months while I tried to find a better pic.

My effort to make it clearer with the edit functions on my phone.

It's different......But I like It!  :D
Wow..The size of those windows! ::)
Wood I'm Guessing like the originals?
I think there's a damn good chance some of the other 175 Police Forces having boxes loosely based on the Trench Design!  ;)

I think it must have been produced from the plans of this iteration of the Met’s
boxes, with a few minor differences. They were manufactured locally by a contractor.

It’s clear from the file that the Chief Constable was in the habit of writing to other CCs for their plans.

[member=7897]dr hue[/member] has done a much better job of enhancing the photo than I could. Many thanks to him for the below.

Right, I think everyone has heard quite enough from me for a few days. Have an nice weekend everybody.

The white panels were so striking that I didn't immediately notice how square they were! Such tall windows does defeat the intention of: 'Bobby can look out, but public can't look in' however.
I wonder how many other boxes were this design? Repaint it all blue (when it needs a refurb) and you could easily mistake it for the more familiar Met Box design, if you haven't got a close-up photo like this.

The original is some kind of metal plate with the image engraved/etched into it. I assume the plate was used in a printing press, hence it is flipped the wrong way round.

This is a positive print taken from the metal plate and pasted to the back of it. Thank you [member=7897]dr hue[/member] for the excellent photo editing. Much more exciting than anything else that’s happening today.

Oh, is something else happening today?

Been looking back at this and I noticed something interesting that diverges significantly from the Met Mark 1s: there's only two steps under the lintels and the dividing strip only goes up to the steps (like the Brachacki box) rather than all the way up to the lintels!

Wish we could see the front, I imagine there'd probably be some wacky stuff going on there too.

Just saw this and about had a heart attack! Was reverse image searching the Ashcombe Avenue box to see if there was a higher resolution anywhere and was brought to a page which happened to feature this image. Seems that they were green and had two front panels, too...

Turns out it's been on the internet since at least 2014 and flew under our radar: https://blogs.baruch.cuny.edu/ipaprocessing/2014/11/its-bigger-on-the-inside/

Also the fencing around this photo makes me believe that this indeed may be the same Sea Mills box which kicked off this topic?

Green and cream... that's an unexpected livery on a near-metbox type, although that puts it in the same colours as Sheffield.
Interesting that linked site gives colours for other boxes, including a maroon door for Bootle (might be worth cross-posting for reference?)

Amazing [member=7206]lym[/member] didn't expect to see another photo so soon! I think the thing on the door is the fire alarm.

Looks like there is some flashing above the police sign.

Can anyone make out the location of the last box/pillar on the page?
