Bessie

Yeah that would be good too. I was thinking the 1:6 would be good for model shots for filming sequences in fan productions. But yeah the Character Options size sounds cool too. I suspect some re siding might be in order. Maybe you can request the printers to print it half scale?

Stuck on the other side of the planet as I am, I don't have an idea of the size protocols for British roadsters during the 1970s; specifically the front and rear license plates of Bessie.

I'd love to have a set.

Now I have seen on Amazon you can buy a front 'Who 1' license plate - I don't know how accurate / durable this product is, and it is only the front plate. So ...How big are they? Inches or centimeters are fine.

Just ran across this on ebay:

4" x 18"

Without going out and measuring mine, this from Wikipedia sounds about right:

The industry standard size front number plate is 520 mm × 111 mm (20½" × 4⅜"). Rear plates are either the same size, or 285 mm × 203 mm (approx 11"x8") or 533 mm × 152 mm (approx 21"x6").

Although I have seen them different sizes and shapes. Even the odd curved one.

I think a car has to be older than 1973 to qualify for a black and silver number plate. Anything registered after that has to have white with black lettering on the front and yellow and black on the back.

Exactly this, I believe the lettering has to be a regulation 3 inches in height as well.

I 've the replica Bessie plate having up in my workshop. They are printed, rather than "Pressed" like the original would be.

Here's a few pictures I took when the car was on display at the Dapol factory back in 2000. I'm pretty sure I've posted them elsewhere; however:

I've actually shelled out for some 3D printing files to make a 6th scale model of the car (As the Mrs is unlikely to ever let me own a real one :( - Although that doesn't stop me looking for one, though ;) ) I just need to find somewhere to get them 3D printed now and I'll be building a replica...

With all the interest in the Whomobile's whereabouts, when my wife stumbled across this site, http://freespace.virgin.net/dr.dean/, that is dedicated to Bessie, well, I just had to post it here because many people probably have not see it yet.

The site gives all sorts of info on Bessie: history, technical info (of the actual car, not the "Doctored"-up version), etc. And since Bessie doesn't have her own thread on here... yet... I thought I'd put this into the Off-Topic But Related section. (And if the Mods feel this should go into an actual Bessie Thread, I'm sure one of them will relocate it.)

So check out the site! It could be a wealth of info for someone who (PUN!) is trying to, or thinking about, building a replica.

Dino.

EDIT, 22 April 2018: Original link above is defunct. Info can still be found here: Bessie Info Site: Web Archive Pages.

After checking the details over at Bessie Info Site: Web Archive Pages I see Bessie [The Siva four-seater Tourer] had the E93A chassis. (The same as the Ford Popular, Anglia or Prefect)

Thought I’d give this thread a nudge as my Bessie website has been back up and running for a while but it now has a new domain name. It’s slowing climbing up the search engines but many of you may not be aware of it.

With these diagrams of the structure and exposed workings we could make a schematic.

Ideally it would be cool to have a diagram like this for Bessie

Hi Bill

The chassis section link from the homepage has some Basic dimensions including the wheel base (distance between the wheels) and shows how the chassis narrows at the front. This is where the chassis plate cover at the front holds the guide for the starting handle.

As I own a replica I do have all the dimensions to hand. It’s quite hard to do accurate orthogonal projections as the seats curve around the corners.

I’ll try to add the basic dimension drawings at some point. It would make an interesting addition to the site. I’ve never really thought about doing that before. Good suggestion.
