Attempts at 3d modelling TARDISes

Thanks [member=1524]Volpone[/member] I appreciate your support as well. I just wish others in this forum can see that too, I don't have any experience in the games, animation or VFX industry and, I'm learning this all on my own. It can be disheartening to read feedback which is harsh and not constructive as that can really discourage you from working on your projects (I speak from experience)

'Remodelled the TARDIS and so far it's looking good. I'll need to remodel the windows though as a technical issue arose when I attempted to texture the model over in Substance Painter

I've remodelled the windows earlier today, I've been told by TARDISman from last summer that, the windows were rounded (thanks for your input, by the way TARDISman!). I did implement that into my model but I encountered some technical issues when I attempted to texture the model. So I've kept them simple and basic...it's not going to be accurate and light will not be able to bend around the windows but it's the best which I can do.

The windows are the ones I find modelling, particularly for this box, the hardest. They're the bane of my existencce..

I'm just going over my virtual build topic and I've noticed that the images have been greyed out and slightly minimised...is there any changes going on with the forum as in any updates? As I'm a little confused...

EDIT: After browsing around on the forum, the admins are currently working to resolve on the matter.

Yesterday, I've started working on my 13th-15th (technically 13th-14th as the base doesn't have the wheelchair ramp yet) AWJ TARDIS box. I've spent an hour, sorting out UVs and packing them before I go ahead and texture it (I lost count at how many times I've textured this box now! 😅)

Today I've spent some time, remodelling the top part of the lamp. I decided to reduce the polycount of it a tad bit as it was a bit dense than it should be:

I'll be working on the lens/bulb next 👍

Here we go again...nothing concrete (no pun intended) yet, just experimenting and trying some different stuff out.

The long way round...

Texture render test, still some work needs to be done. 'just curious what the textures looked like in blender. the fact that im doing this on a bad day makes this process more difficult...

I've ammended the textures a bit more, I've started this last night and I got it to an almost finished state this afternoon.

I really like the materials for the handles, I just placed in a smart material and adjusted the maps of the material. This was done in Substance Painter. I've exported the textures and imported them into Blender and here's what that looks like

This week has been a bit busy for me in my personal life but, I'm still working on my AWJ TARDIS model. I've added a darker shade of blue to differentiate the base colour and the lighter shade of blue.

This screenshot was taken from Substance Painter

Has been a bit of a while since I last posted, hasn't it? I've still been plugging away at this box. I've also been working on texturing the 15th Doctor's TARDIS exterior as well. I've modelled in the wheelchair ramp on the base. Here's what the texturing looks like so far in Substance Painter.

I've also experimented with UDIM tile workflow and, to cut a long story short, I'd thought I'd make it more efficient so this model has 5 UDIM tiles in total. I've also tried my best to replicate that various shades of blue and turqoise-y green that 15th's box has, from what I can see it looks a bit more greener than 13th's box. I'm speculating that the production team gave it a few licks of paint during Whittaker, Tennant and Gatwa's tenures? Correct me if I'm wrong on this! Here's also a reference pic from Space Babies to compare it with.

It's not 1:1 but, I think it captures the flavour of the prop in question and so far, I'm quite happy with it! Lemme know what you folks think so far!

The textures for 15th's box is nearly finished. I thought I'd export the textures from Substance Painter and import them into Blender and...the model with textures applied looks better than I thought it would! 😅 'Looking at the reference images and screengrabs from Season One (Series 14) the box looks a tad more green so I changed the base colour a bit to match that.

The render on the left is V1 and the one on the right is V2 (which has the more green-ish tone). @Aidan_Wilk!non @Audrey @Mike Verta what do you think so far?

both look fabulous

Agree they both look good! I don't know the colors well enough, especially in today's color grading world, but criticism-wise you know what my handicap is - when the goal isn't photorealism, I think every criticism is subjective. "Do you like it?" is an entirely subjective question based on personal taste. "Does this look real?" is far more objective, and an easier question to answer definitively! But Aidan's right - your geometry "feels" right, even if I don't know this box that well. Really solid work.

Here's my 15th Doctor's AWJ Box finished! I'm really happy with how this box has turned out, both model & texture-wise. The windows still need some modifying so, I'll be working on those later down the line.

I want to thank @Aidan_Wilk!non for providing the updated line drawings for this box, and for providing general feedback here & there.

So, I've done a few renders of this box;

1) With the lantern, signage and windows lit up and with some post-processing added using Blender.

2) With the lantern, signage and windows off and with the same post-processing added using Blender.

3) Is the same as the first render but with the post-processing (mainly colour correction) has been removed.

4) And finally the wireframe render, to show off the topology of the model.

'Gave this box a slight re-texture and added some slight weathering and increased the blues a tad. I think the previous render, I went a bit too heavy with the colour correcting, initially I wanted to bring out the greener tones a tad more.

However the blues weren't that visible so, I've ammended the textures a bit more so that the blues are a bit more visible. I've also adjusted the colour-correcting to make sure the "warmness" is not too strong.

I'm not a virtual builder but I suspect virtual boxes are a little like physical boxes in that you may think you're done but then at some point, years down the road, something starts nagging at you and you have to revisit the build to tweak it. Virtual builds may not be subjected to physical wear and tear but as software improves what was built in 2009 may not be as fulfilling in 2025.

You are defo not wrong there, Volpone!

'Going through some moments of sadness and I don't know for some reason I have apathy in regards to completing 15th's box. It's making me feel quite sad to be really honest. I don't know
