Alien Currencies of Doctor Who

There was some mention of these coins in Davros Skaro's http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=7855.0 topic, and of course I was intrigued. ;) So after a bit of digging I found these images in warmcanofcoke's http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=7132.0 thread (hope you don't mind me reposting them here)

All in all this could be a fun little build - I might give it a try if I get a round tuit. ;)

Kind regards, The14thDr :D

Yes that is a mechanical bug , but money on some planet.

7th Doctor's coins he gave Ace in "Remembrance of The Daleks":

Will post more when I find them.

Great post The14th too.

Chris.

Fantastic post! Thank you Davros Skaro! Those images are great (perhaps I should give the thread a more generic title, something along the lines of "Alien Currencies in Doctor Who"?)

That would be more suited, then we can add more money from the show!
Like this one from "The Runaway Bride", 10th Doctor:

The "mechanical bug" is a modified Zoid , some legs removed and painted black.

The coinage from remembrance is just old UK money. Pounds, Shillings and Pence.

Dragonfire
GLITZ: There must be some mistake in the reckoning.
(The Doctor and Mel sit at the next table, and he takes out a book to read. The Doctor's Dilemma, by Bernard Shaw.)
ACE: The mistake's in your wallet, not my arithmetic.
GLITZ: Do you take Asteroid Express?

Thanks for identifying that "bug" for us, rassilonsrod (it just shows, they would use literally anything as a prop in the 70s and 80s ;D)

There's the big coin from Aldebaran III in the Pirate Planet but haven't any pics.
Thanks Cardinal. Do you know which episode of the Pirate Planet this is? If we can get an episode number I'll have a look and see if I can get some images (this just saves me the trouble of having to go through all 4 parts trying to find it - unless someone beats me to it of course ;))

As a little side-note, I thought I'd heard of "Aldebaran" before: it turns out the drinks that River kept in the Doctor's TARDIS in The Husbands of River Song was actually "Aldebaran Brandy" (that and it sounds an awful lot like the planet "Alderaan" from the Star Wars movies! ;D

Fantastic screengrabs as always warmcanofcoke! It's much appreciated - and thank you for taking the time to go through all those episodes to find the screengrabs. :)

EP2
(The Doctor holds up a large coin.)
DOCTOR: Right. Heads we go after Romana first, tails we go after Pralix first, hmm?
(Mula nods. The Doctor throws the coin into the air. They stare up for about five seconds then the Doctor catches it again.)
MULA: Tails.
DOCTOR: Heads.
(The Doctor uncovers the coin. It is heads.)
MULA: How can you take such a dangerous decision like that, just leaving it to chance.
(It's a double headed coin.)
DOCTOR: Two kings on Aldebaran Three.
MULA: That's not fair.

Grotzits :

The Mysterious Planet

GLITZ: So, he is after what we are.
DIBBER: Well, could be.
GLITZ: Course he is. I knew it all along. He's got no more interest in the scientific side of things than I have.
DIBBER: Well, you didn't fool him, telling him you're a philatelist, did you, mister Glitz?
GLITZ: Philanthropist, you ignorant dink. Didn't you learn nothing in that remand home?
DIBBER: Well, whatever the word, he guessed that you weren't one.
GLITZ: Don't I look like a philanthropist?
DIBBER: Well, how do I know? I've never seen one.
GLITZ: A philanthropist, my son, is someone who gives away all their grotzits out of the simple goodness of their heart.
DIBBER: Oh, you mean they're stupid? Oh yeah, you probably do look like one, then.

The Ultimate Foe

(Glitz is taken with the carvings on the Time Lord's benches.)
GLITZ: This is real machonite, you know. Worth a few grotzits today, Your Honour.
DOCTOR: Glitz.
GLITZ: I could make you a fair offer on a job lot, do you a very good deal.
DOCTOR: Glitz!
GLITZ: What?
DOCTOR: You were sent here by the Master.
GLITZ: Yeah, well, he's a business partner, so to speak. We've had a few nice little tickles together
DOCTOR: This court is not interested in your sordid business deals, Glitz.
INQUISITOR: Very good, Doctor. Keep him to the point.

GLITZ: But he was here.
DOCTOR: Illusion, Glitz. The shadow, not the substance. But if you don't want to come, you can stay here and build sandcastles. I'm sure if you think hard enough, you can conjure up a bucket and spade.
GLITZ: Tell you something. If you two meet face to face, five grotzits gives you ten he's first past the chequered flag.

(The Master and Glitz are watching this on the scanner.)
MASTER: I want you to rejoin the Doctor and lead him to the Valeyard.
GLITZ: No chance. You don't catch me going near no more quill pens again.
(The Master swings a shiny pendant in front of Glitz.)
GLITZ: I'm just going to stay here till I can get back to my own kind and some honest thieving.
(Glitz's eyes follow the pendant.)
MASTER: Splendid, splendid. Listen to me. Are you listening, Sabalom Glitz?
GLITZ: Not really. I was just wondering how many grotzits this little bauble cost you.
(Glitz takes it from the Master, so the Master wheels out a large wooden chest.)
MASTER: Perhaps this will appeal to your crass soul.
(A pirate's treasure chest.)
GLITZ: Truly a wondrous sight for a connoisseur such as myself. There isn't a living creature in the universe I couldn't bribe with this little lot.
MASTER: Yours, if you follow my orders.
(The Master slams the lid shut, just missing Glitz's fingers.)

Dragonfire

BELAZS: This spacecraft is mine.
GLITZ: Hang on, the seventy two hours aren't up yet. You said if I could get hold of the grotzits I could have the Nosferatu back.
BELAZS: Then I shall just have to make sure you don't manage to find the money in time. I shall have to make very sure.

The Paradise of Death

KITSON: Thank you, Mister Freeth. Well now, we'll start with a look at our little menagerie of creatures from outer space, beginning with the crab-clawed Kamelius from the deserts of Aldebaran Two.

DOCTOR: Where did you say this creature comes from, Mister Kitson?
KITSON: It lives in the deserts of Aldebaran Two, a small planet about the size of Venus.
DOCTOR: Hmm. About sixty eight light years away, if I'm not mistaken.
KITSON: That is correct.
DOCTOR: Well then, would you be so good as to explain how you managed to persuade it to come to Hampstead Heath?
KITSON: That, Doctor, would be telling.

DOCTOR: Yes, well, you're missing the point, Mister Freeth. If those animals are a form of ER, then the experience of them has been recorded. They're all images of real creatures. I recognised your so-called crab-clawed Kamelius as soon as I saw it.
FREETH: You recognised it? Who are you, Doctor?
DOCTOR: Somebody who spent a long weekend on Aldebaran Two a few years ago. Too long a weekend. The food was disgusting.
FREETH: (laughing) Yes, it is, isn't it. How many recipes are there for cactus pulp?

Star Trek The Next Generation : Relics

SCOTT: Here's to you, lads.
PICARD: I hope I'm not interrupting. I was just coming off duty and I wanted to see how you were doing.
SCOTT: Not at all, not at all. Have a drink with me, Captain.
PICARD: Thank you.
SCOTT: I don't know what it is, exactly, but I would be real careful. It's real
(Picard knocks it back in one)
PICARD: Aldebaran whiskey. Who do you think gave it to Guinan?
SCOTT: Ah.

Death to the Daleks

Spanish Currency

DOCTOR: Well done. That's rather a jolly game, don't you think?
BELLAL: Well, was that really necessary, Doctor?
DOCTOR: Oh yes, I think so. Let me show you something.
(The Doctor takes a coin out of a waistcoat pocket.)
DOCTOR: Five piastas. Do I need five piastas? No, I don't think so. Right then, just you watch this.
(The Doctor tosses the coin onto a red section, and it gets zapped by electricity until it goes BANG.)
DOCTOR: Tilt. Right, let's go and see what other pleasures they have in store for us.

DOCTOR 1: Don't be in such a hurry.
(He takes out some coins.)
TEGAN: We have to pay to get in?
DOCTOR 1: It could cost you your life.
(He throws a square coin onto one of the red and white alternate floor tiles, then another, a third and a fourth.)
TEGAN: How long do you plan to play pitch and toss?
DOCTOR 1: Patience, child.
(A fifth coin on a red tile sets lightning playing all across the board.)
DOCTOR 1: Diabolical ingenuity! Nothing happens until you reach the fifth row, half way, and then the entire board becomes a death trap.
MASTER: Our ancestors had such a wonderful sense of humour.
DOCTOR 1: Do I know you, young man?
MASTER: Believe it or not, we were at the Academy together.
TEGAN: What do you want?
MASTER: To help.
TEGAN: That's the funniest thing I've heard all day.

Judging by this screengrab I'm guessing the prop was around 2" (50mm) in diameter. Thoughts??

Hope you don't mind if I quote you likewise  ;)

Well, I technically stole borrowed those Planet of Fire screencaps from you first, so I guess this makes us even. ;D

In fact, I'm kind of glad you quoted my post in that topic; it's reminded me to get off my backside and get working on that replica I was planning! ;D ;D

In the interest of posterity, the thread for that "credit bauble" has some fantastic discussions on how a replica could be made. http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=7421

Frontios

NORNA: Don't torture yourself. Nobody expects you to go back down there.
TURLOUGH: No, of course they don't. I'm Turlough.
(He holds out his clenched fists to Norna.)
NORNA: What's this?
TURLOUGH: Decision time.
(She picks his left hand, which holds a slightly bent square token with a hole in the middle.)
TURLOUGH: That's it then. I'm going.
NORNA: No, don't be silly.
TURLOUGH: You can't argue with fate. Here. It's a two corpira piece. You blow through it for good luck.
(They shake hands.)
NORNA: Wait a minute.
(She holds up the second coin that was in his right hand. Turlough goes down the ladder. Meanwhile, two men peer down through the ventilation grill.)

DOCTOR: In here.
CHELA: It's all right, I think we've managed to lose them.
(A masked figure jumps out and shakes its maracas at them. They all yelp.)
CHELA: I'm sorry, Doctor, it's just the surprise.
DOCTOR: What is it?
(The figure touches the Doctor with a maraca.)
CHELA: You've been touched by an attendant demon. You must forfeit a coin. It's the custom, I'm afraid.
DOCTOR: Custom?
CHELA: On the day of the ceremony, the attendant demons seek out the unwary. Anyone they touch with the evil must pay up or, er.
DOCTOR: Or what?
CHELA: Have water tipped over their heads. It's part of the fun.
DOCTOR: I'm afraid I don't have a coin.
(Chela pays up for the Doctor.)
CHELA: Here you are. May you never feel the serpent's tooth.
(The 'demon' rattles its maracas and leaves.)
DOCTOR: I wish it were that easy.)
