First post here, apologies if I make some mistakes.
I have long had an idea for a custom sonic screwdriver which incorporates the whistle prop from Fury from the Deep. I am also fond of the idea of a very "steampunk" take on Doctor Who, in the same vein as the 8th Doctor. So with those ideas in mind I worked out a design and proceeded to aquire parts.
Once I had my design planned I acquired a second hand War Doctor sonic toy and an ACME whistle of the appropriate style. The War Doctor sonic seemed like a perfect base to build on due to it's combination of classic Who shape and new Who light.
I used a rotary tool to trim back the conical tip of the Sonic and the bottom of the whistle, then I used the rotary tool to core out the inside of the whistle and make room for the led light on the Sonic. I drilled some holes and made some wire pins to help hold the new whistle emitter to the slide of the Sonic and applied some super glue to hold the two parts together. The bond has proven sufficiently strong as I carry it in the breast pocket of my waistcoat frequently and it hasn't broken yet, even after I fell asleep on top of it.
To create the "wood" hand I used masking tape and paper to create a template that would fit over the original Sonic's handle. Once I was happy with the result I purchased some peel and stick wood grain designed for lining drawers apparently which was exactly what I needed. It was a simple matter to cut the drawer liner out using the template and stick it to the handle. Then I just had to do some masking and add some brass and copper paint for that final steampunk touch.
I'm thinking about getting some rub n' buff or better paint to get more shine out of the "brass" sections, but otherwise my dream steampunk Sonic Screwdriver is complete and I am thrilled with the result. When you pull back the slide the light is revealed dramatically for that "sci fi tech" flare and the whistle style emitter gives a "sonic flavor that the modern sonic's with their light based emitters often lack. It has a pedigree that can be traced back to one of the earliest SonicScrewdriver props, and it even looks a bit like a flat head screwdriver. Enjoy these photo's of it besides the faux Victorian Doctor's bag which houses the rest of my SonicScrewdriver collection.
