This might help. I regret I don't have permission to show the full picture but, rest assured, there's nothing in it that we haven't seen elsewhere.

The picture is from the first season and also shows the complete (five down-lighter width) of the scanner assembly being set-up.  This, with the info contained in Marc's table, should narrow the source of the picture down for you (that's only two possible stories).

The picture shows all the floral embellishments (!) were present (at least on the side facing us):

You might also like to know that this is an 'Arts and Crafts' style chair and - if genuine - would date from approx 1900 to 1910. The arts and crafts movement (in reaction to the increasing mass-production of the late Victorian/early Edwardian era) sought to use traditional hand-crafted materials throughout their creations.

If you look carefully at the joints in the chair, they aren't nailed or screwed together, they are held with wooden dowels which are left showing (this was another characteristic of the A and C movement - they wanted to emphasise the 'rustic'/hand-crafted look and to show how something had been made).

Another characteristic was the use of quite strong colours in the fabrics and wallpapers - think Pugin's Houses of Parliament or William Morris fabrics; so, plum-reds and rich greens with gilding for good measure!

We've got some great references now :)

I suspect the middle flower decoration is missing from this and it shows the cleaner wood underneath.

Interesting... now that I've had another look at this beauty. The Mk1 Seat Fringe is lower than it is on the Mk2, and the Mk1 has those Floral Upholstery Tacks (4 of them) across the front of the seat, whereas we have no idea how many are hidden by the Mk2's fringe. The Mk2 also has three of them on the sides of the seat whereas the Mk1 has none. (And none are visible from the back, at least on the Mk2, and in that image, the front-most Tack is missing from the side of the seat.)

Then moving into the wooden decorations, with the Mk1 having those nice curve-cut leg braces and a more ornate front leg brace just below the seat, and the Mk2 being plain in those areas (or not as ornate under the seat), but having the ornate tops on the back uprights, would it be deviating too far to draw this in "idealistic" fashion? Taking the fancier pieces of both chairs to create an "armchair hybrid"?

Aside from having two confirmed versions of the chair itself, the variations in each "mark" are so numerous with the now-you-see-them, now-you-don't, now-you-do-again changing arrangements of the Floral Upholstery Tacks that trying to draw each variation of each "mark" could drive one to distraction. So, might it not be best to at least draw each "mark" idealistically with all of the Upholstery Tacks in place, if not as one idealistic hybrid chair?

Thoughts on that?

I don't think the Mk. 2 has a support under this  front of the seat. It sags too much and sags even more later too.

I think there's a little confusion with my comments, Marc. I don't mean the "supports" under the seat that hold the seat in place:
chair1.jpg
I was referring to the "leg" support that runs across the front, just below the seat. Mark 1 shown above...

chair2.jpg
...and the mark 2 shown here.

The Mk1 definitely has a more ornate "crossmember" support than the Mk2, and is IMHO more pleasing to the eye.

The word you're looking for here Dino is "stretcher" as in they stop the legs stretching apart!

Hi Dino,
My comment was referring to this. I don't believe the seat -fabric has a front support/ stretcher because the fabric sags too much and therefore without one there's nowhere to tack the brass flowers onto.  :)

Tony, Marc, thanks for the correction on the terminology (I thought the "stretchers" were the parts where the fabric was "stretched" over and tacked to, and the bits between the legs were either braces or "runners"). And I see what you meant now with that sag, Marc. So there would indeed be no upholstery tacks across the front of the seat on the Mk2. (And that would also make the chair more comfortable to sit in, as with that stretcher not being across the lower part of the backrest, not having a stretcher across the seat front would prevent pressure on the backs of the thighs, especially with a seat like the Mk2, which is sort of a "hammock"-style. The Mk1 has more of a cushioned seat - not much of a cushion, but enough of one - that would keep the thighs from pressing against that front stretcher. (And I wonder why I didn't notice that before?)

Still, this begs the question of the one, "idealistic", chair: would it be better to go with the Mk1 seat, front seat stretcher and tacks? Or with the Mk2 no-cushion "hammock"-style seat? We could still have the idealistic versions of both chair versions (i.e. all of the tacks in place on each chair); but if one was to combine the two chairs into one, taking the best bits of each, which seat would be the one to use? (And I think Tony should weigh in on this one since he is the one giving us those magnificent measured drawings and is now thinking of the console room "trappings": draw one of each chair, or one hybrid chair with the best of both in it?)

Interesting, when you used the word before, I had understood it in the way that it stretches the fabric taught... Much as you'd have on a folding chair :)

Looking at a close up of one of the frame-grabs it looks to me like the flower decoration is actually a circular disk with 8 'points' or 'peaks' jutting out. It also has 8 small rounded studs with a larger central stud. Not much of a texture but it does have a sleight 'hammered' appearance.

Whilst researching something completely unrelated, I discovered this... A smiliar though larger/ wider looking chair.
