Ah... now if only there was an easy way of getting a sound circuit for that one to fit inside your standard AAA penlight (with the option of turning the sound off in case you needed to use the penlight as it was intended - just a penlight).

Now if only Character Options would budge, and after listening to the fans (who are their potential customers), talk to whoever they need to get some of these Classic Series prop replicas rolling!

Judging by this image, the penlight looks roughly 6" in length, but I'd appreciate if someone who owns the actual penlight (or knows someone who does) could post the actual length, to help with finding a close-enough Second Doctor sonic.

EDIT: kudos to BreadleyBear over on TheRPF, who is actually lucky enough to own one of the original Ever Ready penlights. The length, from tip to tip, is 144mm.

Thank to BradleyBear's measurements, Dark Energy Creations has made a replica of this penlight, which you can see here in my collection with the Fury from the Deep life preserver whistle (the sonic prop from Fury) and an early version of my Dominators sonic (I upgraded the handle, which I just posted on another thread).

No worries, 14th. I thought I'd posted it over here as well. (Maybe I was going to, and forgot? ) Anyway, I can't remember where I found that image, but I'm sure it's floating around the web somewhere - in several somewheres - if one did a Google Image search for it.

It's good you found the length for the original, which is very hard to find. They do come up on eBay once in a while, but they're usually over $40 US. Sometimes they pop up on Amazon, but the price isn't much better - sometimes worse. If one is lucky enough to find one of these, please let us know if the bulb in the original is replaceable with one of the new LED bulbs like in the modern AAA penlights.

Give or take a few millimeters, any AAA penlight would work for this prop, especially of you could build that "Cornelia Marie Blue" wedge that goes under the pocket clip.

Terrasolo, just curious, but how much is Dark Energy Creations asking for one of these replicas? And does it have a bulb like the original, or an LED for the light? (And if you have a link to this, a good place to post that would be in our http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?board=33.0 Section.)

Hey Dino, he was selling them for around a hundred, I believe, but I don't see them on his site anymore so I just shot him an email. His site is just the same name as his business incase you wanted to contact him too. He sells them with original bulbs that match the era, I changed mine to an LED after because in my experience those older bulbs burn out fast. It's a great replica though, really helped to fill the gap in the collection perfectly.

You won't believe what I found while watching "The Time Warrior" a while back, I'll post the grabs, Then tell you what it is if you haven't worked it out. Mind you this is a Jon Pertwee episode. (Hint)

The interesting thing about "The Time Warrior" usage - aside from the fact that it helps cement the penlight as the same one used by Patrick Troughton, is that Jon Pertwee uses it differently than Patrick Troughton. Of course Troughton's was a Sonic Screwdriver while Pertwee's was just a penlight, but what I mean is that in "The War Games" Patrick Troughton presses the back button to turn it on in one scene and in another I think he actually twists the button to the on setting - this penlight has both a push and twist activation feature - where as Jon Pertwee has the twist to activate set to 'on' and then continually taps the pocket clip to complete the circuit in a sort of Morse code style to flash the light on and off.

I know that TARDIS Builders is a great site and a nice home away from drama but have any of you followed the Sonic Screwdriver threads on the RPF? Aside from "The Time Warrior" mention, we've covered all of these screen caps over there in great detail, including the "Fury from the Deep" and "The Dominators" as well. The Fury sonic has been identified thanks to behind the scenes photos (and no a regular screwdriver isn't one of them) as a life preserver whistle, while the Dominators is still unidentified but thanks to the episode still surviving I have been able to replicate the prop, as best I can see it, thanks to the uses of spare penlights and 3D printed parts.

I hope that all came out right, I don't want to sound like a jerk or anything, just wanted to make sure everyone was aware that there is a ton of research on these three props out there already. Even if someone wanted to bring that research over here, at least it could save time. I had actually posted all the caps from the Dominators on the RPF about four years ago now and the War Games too. So yeah, again, I hope this helped rather than sounding rude.

I'll admit, it is a fairly lengthy read, but definitely well worth it (I've only skim-read so far, but the attention to detail is phenomenal! )

Having said that, I hadn't noticed those screen caps from The Time Warrior before, so thank you for sharing them Davros Skaro (once again, it's greatly appreciated)

That is a great research thread over on the RPF. The only problem is that a few of the posts that should have images in them for the references the posts are discussing now only have in them instead of the images. I remember stumbling on this some years ago and there were some great images to go with those posts. (Now I wish I'd gotten copies of those images while they were there.)

Too bad we couldn't transcribe that info over here so we'd have it in two places. (I did that with the 1996 TVM Console Restoration blog, and it's a good thing I did. The person that wrote the blog on it and gave me permission to transcribe it had something happen to his photo hosting site, and now his blog is full of those little blue ? boxes, but here we've still got those photos he took during the restoration.)

It's always a good idea to have some sort of back-up for things like this because you never know.

Cool, thanks guys. I have saved all the reference photos so I can post whatever is needed in any relevant thread on TB if you'd like. I also screen capped every used of the Troughton sonic that I could on my own too.

I did start a thread on the Fury from the Deep sonic but can add whatever reference I have to the other two threads. I'm not sure which pictures are missing but I'm sure I have them save anyway.

The Second Doctor: Season 6, "The War Games" (1969)

The third and final prop used by Patrick Troughton's was introduced in last story of his era, "The War Games". This time it was an unmodified penlight that appears to have been made by Ever Ready. Some time after the Ever Ready penlight was found, Frazer Hines (Jamie) was asked what he remembered of the filming prop and he had stated that the end cap was blue, which helped confirm more details of this penlight. The Ever Ready penlight was, according to the flashlight collecting community, made in a similar way to K cars; meaning the same design being made by many companies, so it is possible that one of those other brands was used for filming and even plausible that there could be minor variances between the Every Ready and the screen used prop. That said, like the two props before it, we have very little information to go by and the Every Ready penlight seems an excellent match. Out of the three, "The War Games" prop appears to be the most iconic Sonic Screwdriver used by the Second Doctor, mainly because it seems to be the most well remembered by the fans.

This penlight shows up again in the Jon Pertwee era in Season 11's "The Time Warrior" (as noted above in this forum but I kept this paragraph for completion's sake), only this time it's used as a regular penlight. That said, this helps us confirm the Ever Ready penlight as the one used by Patrick Troughton, since the BBC did like to reuse props very often and the details match. Jon Pertwee also uses it slightly differently than Patrick Troughton did, after all it's not a Sonic Screwdriver here. He appears to have the twist knob set to 'on' and then repeatedly taps the pocket clip to complete the circuit to make the light flash on tap.

Also, these were the pics posted by BradleyBear on the RPF as well as the supplied dimensions of the Ever Ready penlight (also pictured is a packaged penlight from a flashlight collector). If he requests that I remove these photos I will but as they were shared publicly, I'm acting under the assumption that they were for public research usage.

Button is 8.5mm in length, 7.5mm in diameter at tip and 9mm in diameter at base
