So I got hold of a roll of Green paper and I thought I'd have a play...




This is just a quick test picture against a reasonably neutral and evenly lit background...



Its not come out too badly. Once I get some decent lighting sorted I'll have a bash with video.

I use GIMP for still artwork. It works like photoshop; however its free. I just made it so that the colour green was invisible. Its a bit rough and ready and requires a fair bit of clean up, but it does the job.

For video work I use Sony Vegas, which has a Chromakey plug-in. I'll just have to work out how to use it properly and make sure the green backdrop is as uncreased and evenly lit as possible otherwise it won't register the green and I'll be left with really bad fringing...

I have a Canon DSLR and have been experimenting with a free thing called Magic Lantern. One of the many useful things it does is to let you use a saved image (say a video of a street scene) as a ghost image for lining up another shot (say a TARDIS model shot) allowing perfect perspective and lighting for later composting.

Tony, I love the fact you used the BBC terminology. My understanding, if correct, is that it was only the BBC that referred to it as CSO while the rest of the world knew it as chroma key.

Well, in the US, I've only heard it referred to as "Green Screen" (or in the earlier days, "Blue Screen"), and that's from interviews with people (actors, directors, etc.) that worked in the industry. But then we are a different animal over here.

I have to agree with Dino, we in Australia have only known it as Blue or Green Screen as well.

"Chromakey" at the Minnesota State Fair in the '80s.  All the local news stations had studios there and they all inevitably had a little demo, explaining how it works to do the weather (and I still don't really understand it much better than slitscan.  But I do know the difference between median and mean.  I think.) 

Anyway, yes.  Nice model.  Nice photos.  The moon shot is nice, although Zoe's moonbase would be better than the Apollo flag IMO.  But I really love the forest photos.  I don't know what it is about the lighting and everything, but I'd swear it was a full-sized box and not a model. 

What a beautiful build! It's amazing - at first, I thought I was looking at the real thing! I love how you even accurately portrayed the warped geometry of the box! May I ask what you used for the textured window panes?

It was a textured panel I bought from a model railway shop, which cost about £3. I've still got the packet and I'll dig it out and let you know over the weekend

The phone panel being on the wrong door seriously does my head in. It just looks wrong, and takes me by surprise every time it catches my eye...

Somehow, the fact that the PTO is on the wrong panel on the same side as the negative (black on white) top-sign makes its 'wrongness' more 'right'...

... if that makes any sense?

Its a fresh build - as I had the molds for the earliest and latest versions I realised I could crack out any variant of the Brachaki throughout its run, so I thought i'd fill out the set as it were.

The phaser is one of those remote controls; however I've never got the hang of being able to control anything with it as they are way to complicated. I just leave it on effects mode - it had a fantastic array of sound effects, as well as a pleasing little "kick back" vibration when you pull the trigger.

I know what you mean, Its almost as if yo are looking at a "Flipped" image, until you get close enough to read the signage.

I might add a phone panel and lock to the correct side of the back face so that I could turn it round to look "normal" if it does my head in too much...
