Okay... That looks like it works. I'd have thought a pen spring wouldn't be strong/stiff enough for this application. I would have gone with one of those springs used in garden hand clippers, though depending on which model of clipper you used, the spring can be a bit too large, or too stiff.

We've got several of those hand clippers in our garden kit, and each one has a different spring, with one looking like a larger version of the pen spring - not much larger... about the size of a drinking straw in diameter, and roughly an inch long. (The other two clippers have springs that are about an inch long, but about as large in diameter as one's little finger, and very stiff. Those definitely wouldn't be good for this.)

So when all is assembled for testing of the mechanism, if the pen spring does prove to be a little too weak, keep those small hand clippers in mind. They're not that expensive, and one with the lighter spring might work. Again that's if the pen spring doesn't work out. (So far it seems to be doing just fine, though, so let's hope it stays that way. :))

I'm using plastic from an old cat litter bottle to find what has to be measured or what problems I have to deal with, as in what go's were & what might get in the way. Then I'll make a metal barrel.
Fission Gun New  (10).JPG

The plastic is a three bend panel. Two sections, top & bottom plate. The hinges are bolted under the panels. The emitter prongs are made of a plastic bowl, which I wont cut down to fit in a triangle angel until I get the shooter made & bolted down in place.

The block in side is for holding the shooter in place, to slide back & forth in the barrel. The slider block is screwed into the sides & top panels.

Anyone think I need to adjust the length of anything?

Not from what I can see, elkad. Everything looks pretty spot on.

Definitely let me know how that goes! If it works out as it's supposed to, I'd like to borrow it to use on my sister!

Now I'm working on the emitter, which starts out as a combination of round & square wood dowel.
Fission Gun New  (19).JPGFission Gun New  (20).JPG

Making the middle with an angel square I also marked out were the square dowels would go.
Fission Gun New  (15).JPGFission Gun New  (16).JPG

Using a vice I tried my best to angel it for a straight square hole.

The cuts aren't laser accurate. Anyone know an easier way to make six long square level cuts on a round dowel?

I glued down the square dowels as level as I could to opposite side. (making all the parts make me realize that the prop builder must of used a computer & allot of  leveling tools to make this prop work correctly. everything has to line up just right.)

Nice job there in making that.

I found this the other day & think it looks like the same part as your making for here:
From "Terror of The Autons" it's suppose to be a bomb.

From "Arc In Space"
NDVD_091.jpg

I've seen something like this before, motor bike shaft for the gear change or a motor of some sort or car diff shaft, I can't remember anymore too long ago, called a "spindle shaft, a bit like these:

This one's a bit short but gives you the idea of the end;

Thanks. :)
Nice find, but I doubt I can put that on my light weight prop.

??? Oh! (thought), I wonder if there any videos on YouTube on the lines of lathing a wood gear rod?

I just connected the trigger to the emitter, using baling wire to hold it.

DSCI0008.JPGDSCI0009.JPG

Putting this together I've found a lot of problems & solutions.
First the pen spring, I was just using that to hold the trigger wile I worked on it, to week to pull the emitter back.

In this screen capture you can see a tube on the back of the gun. That made me think I can use a pulling spring inside a small PVC pipe, & hold it inside with a nail threw it.

As for putting it all together, I'm going to have to bolt everything down on one side, thread the spring threw the tube, attach it to the trigger baling wire,  bolt down the other side using needle nose pliers, then screw on the spring tube & back.
I also found I can use a curled up piece of bailing wire on the fin bolts & lead them to the emitter to open & close.

(this post was done in a rush, PICTURES COMING SOON.)  ;D

I'm not going to glue the emitter to the trigger rod till I have everything straighten out.

I also made a quick update video.

Elkad, everything in your build looks amazing! I would love to see the video of everything working, but until I can figure out why I'm only getting a blank, white rectangle with the embedded player on the Forum, would you please post the direct link to the YouTube video? At least them I'll be able to watch it.

things are weird, comments are opening today for me (morning here in Aust.) I shut down my computer last night & this morning booted it up & everything is working again! .... Bloody Gremlins! >:-(

Chris.

P.S. Dino,  I seem to be following you just after you put up comments, LOL adding a bit more to this one as I just got notice or reaching my limit for "short" replies. LOL

After laying it down, losing it, finding it & getting distracted with other projects & helping my mother take care of my Grandmother. I finally got back around to working a little more on this one.

I'm making a new set of barrel panels out of the last batch of 4"x10' 30 something schedule thin wall PVC pipe. Which has last me a long time.

This is the hardest prop I ever worked on. One problem & everything comes to a halt. I tried working on the opening mechanism & I feel I have just gone back over the same ides that didn't pan out the first time I tried them. I am stuck for an answer. I feel its a simple mechanism, but it needs accurate measurements & precise movements that wont jam on each other.
