My own take on the prop, cast in recycled aluminium. It didn't come out perfectly but I wasn't in the mood for another go.

Very nice.  I want it as a pinkie ring.  My neighbor is even a jeweler.  But I'm cheap and I'm afraid of what it would cost.

I think it looks OK, I'd be interested what was involved in melting aluminum, e.g. how hard is it?

We used what you might call a desktop furnace which heats the metal to just over a thousand degrees. The mold was made using the two-part sand casting process of a Seal of Rassilon keyring, originally made by Russreps, and what I believe was the surround for a door knob.

I think that Seal looks pretty darned good, CH! If you ever do decide to have another go at it sometime in future, please make sure you have a friend on hand to take photos of the process as you start out (if both your hands are busy and can't take the photos yourself). This would make for an outstanding Tutorial in the Gadget Workshop Section!

(However, I still think it would be great to create an "Other Props Tutorial" Section for things like this. We have one for TARDISes and Consoles, but no Tutorial section for other props; those tutorials get mixed in with other things in either the Gadget ~ or Other Prop Workshop Sections.)

Can do but it should not be attempted without an experienced/trained person present. At a thousand degrees if you get even a drop on you in the time it takes to feel it burn it's already burned down to the bone.

Excellently said, CH. And for that matter, your post above would be the perfect caveat/disclaimer to start such a tutorial with, using big, bold-faced, red lettering so it would be the first thing anyone reads before getting into the tutorial.

Oh there will definitely be a huge warning and an almost as big disclaimer.

Not sure what Doctor Who related thing to do as an example but I'm sure it won't be long before I come up with something I want to do.
