If anyone wants a really good look at a roundel, go to this site:

http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r?sContinent=EUR&screen=LotDetails&iSaleItemNo=2658339&iSaleNo=11808&sServer=http://images1.bonhams.com/&sPath=2005-10/10/94265713-8-1.jpg

It has a flash viewer where you can zoom right in [although you have to wait a few seconds for the images to load at higher rez each time]. You can zoom so far, you can see the glass fibres!

Hope this helps anyone who is considering making their own roundels and want something to look at for inspiration/help.

I'll just start by quoting a post I made in the main door reference thread which in turn quotes two other posts by other people, this is getting very convoluted and I'll try not to do it again but it is at least neater than not giving credit to the original posters.

Quote from: teletran on Aug 22, 2009, 08:42 amI completely agree and nice diagram by the way.

At this point we seem to be dancing around the roundels like some bizarre Mexican hat dance, so I'll ditto some of the relevant posts and suggest we give them their own thread, maybe on TBF in the design and reference section. I can at least say that what we know about the roundels now far outweighs what was known 5 years ago when I first started work on my console.

Quote from: purpleblancmange board=discussconsoles thread=1666 post=12408 time=1126280909Okay, here we go again - steady yourselves now as "The Great Roundel Debate (tm)" is back, this time with a vengeance.  Grrr - I can sense you all quaking in your boots.

Over all diameter = 19.5"
Edging = 3.25"
Interior "plate" diameter = 13"

Here's a sectional cut through sketch, on the front of my Water Bill.  Well, what other use are they?
100_0593.jpg

Here's a full on view:
100_0585.jpg

And a close up on the edge detail:
100_0589.jpg

Enjoy.  Rulers, measuring sticks and scarves - cm on the front, inches on the back - at the ready!

This covers most of what is currently known of the Newbery style roundels, the diameter of the older style is confirmed by comparison as approximately 2 ft. This tallies closely with the measurements provided by meantimebob.

Ok now onto my findings; based on the information above I've tried to recreate the original outline using intersecting circles to preserve the curved shape.

round09.jpg

Having connected the circles into a single curve (middle picture) I started wondering why the outer edge needed such a small curve compared to the all the others and quite frankly why they weren't flat, I mean logically they should be. So I decided to assume they were flat or sharp corners or whatever you want to call them and that any curve they did have was a result of the moulding process. I therefore blunted any other sharp corners by the same amount and the result (bottom picture) is quite pleasing. Spin it round fast enough and it comes out looking like this.

round10xpr.jpg

As to whether it's accurate or not I leave to the lucky sods with an original to work out but if it is or if it's close enough to fix easily I should be able to make up some detailed plans pretty quickly.

Were the main door roundels exactly the same as this?

I believe so, they were even non-grey originally. Check the first episode of Ribos Operation.

Though the holes they were set in, in the doors MAY have been slightly larger.

wonderful. Was it also true that the TARDIS doors were the same from around the Ribos Operation through to Survival?
Although you can note that hinges on the door were somewhat less prominent in the Davison era.

At a guess I'd say yes. Though I could be wrong.

What I understand is that its the same doors from Hartnell... Just they may have rebuilt the mechanical side.

Though again... I might be wrong,

When Mr Purple pops his head in, he'll probably know the score :)

Casting my mind back to the shot of the control room from the clip of DIOE at the start of the five Doctors, it seems the roundels didn't have the concentric circle details that they did later on. Anyway, I'm sure someone who knows better than I do will chime in sooner or later  ;D

That type of fibreglass roundel with the concentric detailing didnt appear until Masque of Mandragora in the wooden console room. They continued to be used right through to Sylvester McCoy after that.

Yep, as I said :D another voice to the confirmation of this :)

When I said about the doors, I meant the bulk of them. The Masque of Mandragora roundels were just added later. :)

The roundels were pretty inconsistent in appearance until the Masque of Mandragora, and were generally larger (about 24") and on a hexagonal tiling pattern, rather than in columns (and about 19").

Whilst the roundels got smaller, the doors didn't, so the fibreglass roundels on the doors were centred in a larger hole. Initially the door roundels were translucent and could be back lit, but in later stories they were painted over in grey like the wall colour.

I knew I was onto something with the doors... I've clearly learned SOMETHING hanging around here :D

And did you know the depth of the roundels on the back of the doors are slightly shallower than the front?

Actually, my suspicion is that the roundels are the same, but the depth of the roundel ..erm, what's the word "hutch", "pigeon hole" is different from front to back? ???
