The Box at the junction of Bowes Road and Brownlow Road in Wood Green - Y10

This is one of the first Met Boxes, made of wood with a concrete roof.

Photograph from most likely the fall of 1929 when these Boxes were being sited and prepared for commissioning --

Of note is that Getty Images has this listed as "Suburban Road c. 1926". Just goes to show you can't always trust the dating of press photos by photo archive services.

Here is a higher resolution closeup of this Box --

In looking at images from Google Earth, some time since 1945 the very wide sidewalks with greens on them have been severely narrowed and the trees on the south side eliminated. What had been a two lane road is now a six lane road. As a result, the actual Box Site is now in the middle of Bowes Road - here is a street view that is both an approximate POV shot and a view of the Box Site --

The Box would be about where the rightmost lane is, center frame not far from the right curb.

Box Site Street View URL:  http://maps.google.com/maps?q=brownlow+Road,+London,+United+Kingdom&hl=en&ll=51.613097,-0.121515&spn=0.000003,0.00184&sll=51.573069,-0.112492&sspn=0.003647,0.007113&hnear=Brownlow+Rd,+London,+United+Kingdom&t=m&z=19&layer=c&cbll=51.612908,-0.121495&panoid=MQFN1ahrr5pZPbnUwVwyHw&cbp=12,65.83,,0,4.82

In the above street view it's hard to see the details of the buildings across the road, so here are a few closer views progressing down the line of houses so you can see the details to compare to the original photograph --

If the base is concrete it can't have been poured in place:

I should think you could get a hand under the corner there.

When I first saw this picture, I wondered if it was a publicity shot with a box that had been temporarily put there for the photograph. I would have thought they'd need to take steps to stabilise it, otherwise it would tend to shift about in the gravel.

It's also odd that it has no light... or mounting for one, as the roof seems to come to a point.

It's the bevel that makes me think its concrete but I would expect it was cast else ware like the roof.

If you look on the other boxes of this type with the spherical lamp the roof comes to a point with the lamp sat on top sugesting just a very small hole at the top of the point

Scarfwearer

Well fair enough. I suppose the small hole would help with the water proofing also.

A larger image of the upper part of this box is posted here: http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=4403.0. (Same image, same guy with hat looking up at the roof, same "scar" on the image.) There are more images of it in here: http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=2090.0 (about 2/3rds the way down the page).

Both of those threads ID this as one of the early wooden boxes, but I've looked until my eyes burned and unless I've missed it, the actual ID hasn't been made yet. So this one is still unknown.

This box is already covered...

Thanks for the link, Pete! I knew someone had to know where to find it. I'm sure once hb88banzai get round to it he'll merge this thread with that one, making edits as needed. (He's really good at that.)

Topics merged.

Thanks for posting anyway scruffy. Now that Gettyimages has started posting higher resolution samples we should probably go through and repost others as well.
