I have a deadline for completing my TARDIS, [the fifth of September], and I want to have a couple of sound effects playing.  Obviously I'd love the TARDIS to have a flashing light and the Tardis groan... any top tips on how to manage this?

Also, I want to rig my fake phone up to play the 'Are you my mummy?' section from the Empty Child, when the telephone reciever is picked up.

All and any suggestions gratefully received...

I use this for my TARDIS sound effects.  



It's cheap ($10), records good quality audio, and easy to use.  It's also powerful enough to directly drive a speaker.  I have mine setup to play a demat sound, then a materialization sound on the next press of the play button.  Pressing the reset button puts it back to demat sound.  

It's easy to record sounds into this unit by attaching the input to the output of your computer's soundcard.  Or, you can use the built-in microphone, but the sound quality won't be as good.

I'm not much use for the Tardis light and sound effect (not quite worked that out for my build yet) but I might be able to help with the phone sound effect. I rigged up my old bakelite phone with a 'talking label' from Talking Products (http://www.talkingproducts.co.uk/talking_labels.htm)

There's a post on  page 6 of my build thread, about 3/4 of the way down, that details the basics of what I did (my phone now has a message from the 4th Doctor when you pick it up  ). It might take some trial and error with bass/treble of the source sound effect to get the talking label to sound just right, but worth it just for the fun of it

A bit late for a reply to this, but my intention is to pick up a Flight Control Tardis toy, and use the innards of that for my sound effects, suitably amplified of course!

Love the idea of the flight contol tardis... great sound and easy to acheive through a simple amplifier such as an I-Pod portable speakers.  Maybe I'll use that on my console.......

I used it on my Tardis and was quite impressed with its.
Just plug it into your sound card and hit record.
I posted a you tube on how to set it up, just go to (chucks build )and all the links are there to put together a complete system. you could use one of these just for the phone.

In the end I managed to hook up a guitar amp to a loop playing on my MP3 player of 6 mins of TARDIS hum, and then the demat sound.

Now however, I've actually got a remote control which turns on and off the main power to the TARDIS, so when it turns on, the lights, and the amp can turn on.

What I need, is something which can be hooked up which will automatically play as soon as it receives power.  I mean, the MP3 player is fantastic, because you can set it on a permenant loop, but you can't control it remotely and it needs charging through a USB port.

I am looking into a remote garage door closer unit. Stanley has a simple unit that just hooks up to any garage door. I used one for my gate so that all my gates and doors work off one pushbutton unit. I will post my results this weekend.

Hi team, I have a question to "bump" this thread back up.

I Have just gotten hold of a telephone body to use inside my TARDIS when built, I have converted a single message recorder before to make a gun sound for my Dalek, however what I want to do is have a multi message reorder that will play the recorded sound clips at random each time the phone is picked up e.g. pick up handset - play 1 message, stop, then hang up. Pick up hand set again and play a different message, then stop and so on.

Can this be done?

Also does the module above do what I would want or would it play each message in turn until you hang up the phone ie a loop?

I live in the UK and I want to get a sound recorder and light modulator for my TARDIS lantern. I want to get it as cheep as possible, preferably under £20 if I can as I have a limited budget. Can anyone help me?

Since I am not well versed in electronic configuration, would it be possible to connect this somehow to play whenever a simple infrared motion detection circuit is broken?  It would only be necessary to play the sound once something trips the link between the infrared sensor.  Hopefully this makes sense, and would be an added bonus if it works.

Don't go the light modulator route. The TARDIS lamp never worked like that. The flashing was always regular, except for more recently when it hardly flashes at all.

Well at the moment I have a dimmer on my light and the SFX run through my iPod and a guitar amp. I want it so I dont have to play about with the dimmer all the time
