Okay, so here starts the reference image topic for Romana's sonic screwdriver.

First, the only piece of screen grab I've been able to find:
RomanaSonic(Reference).jpg
Yeah... this one sucks. I know. It looks a frackload better as a thumbnail, but that doesn't do much good and unfortunately it's the only one I've been able to locate. So I'm hoping that members with "The Horns Of Nimon" DVD can get some better grabs of this brief, one-off prop and post them here so we can see how well the replica's images are.

Here is a replica that was sold on eBay some years ago - can't remember exactly how many, but I know it was more than four. I snagged the images of interest for possibly making a replica of my own (more on that in a moment), but these were the best of the ones in the listing so they're the only ones I went for. There are several different angles so hopefully they'll be of help. I can't attest to the accuracy of this replica, but if I remember correctly, the person selling it (for more than my wife would let me pay for it even though it was intended for her, hence my snagging the images) swore it was accurate to the original. (Then again, how many times have we heard that one before?)

So with that, caveat lector (or maybe in this case, caveat auditor)!

And a last one in someone's hand to get a gauge on the size of this sonic.

It looks like it could be made easily from some sections of small tubing with colored tape placed in strategic areas, or an antenna/aerial with said tape placed, well, you know the rest. Rumor has it that is what the original was made from - an extendable antenna/aerial with the colored tape and it was thrown together at the last minute, but again we all know how that rumor mill works. So anyone with inside info or better reference images from the story, please help add to this while I continue looking for more of the same. (And a better reference image from the story will certainly find its way into the thumbnail of this topic!)

Thanks for posting those images Dino. I think one of those photos may be one of the replicas I used as a basis for drawing up my blueprints over on the other thread (minus a couple of details, of course).

And with that last photo to compare the size of the sonic to a human hand, I'm guessing that my guestimates weren't too far out, give or take a centimetre.

Kind regards, The14thDr :D

Thanks for that Dino, very helpful, given the fact we have literally 0 things beyond screencaps of this prop.

I guess the ebay auction is someones _idolised_ version of the prop, which is entirely up to them. And you really 14th! Do the prop as you feel is right.

Did I read somewhere that it was just an extendable aerial of somekind with electric tape?
Regards
David

There is another thread floating around here somewhere where someone mentions that the prop was thrown together at the last minute, and that's exactly how they made it, but as usual because I'm looking for that thread, I can't find it.

I know there are better images of that sonic in the story, so if someone has the DVD I'm sure they can get better screen grab references for how it looks. The one I've posted up top is the only image I've got of it (because I'm a dunce and haven't gotten that DVD yet :P).

With all of the great reference images being posted lately I thought it was time to give this thread a "bump". If anyone has "The Horns of Nimon" DVD, and can get some nice screen grabs of Romana's sonic screwdriver, please do and please post them? So far this thread only has one not-so-great screen grab of the prop - and I can't even remember where I'd found it: somewhere on the net is all I can remember. (Searching Google Images wasn't very helpful when it came to images of this prop.) So someone with the DVD, please help expand our reference images for this one?

Hello

I don't know much about how the prop was assembled but I think that as well as appearing in The Horns of Nimon, that Sonic was also used as 'something else' in State of Decay, but I can't recall if it was on screen long enough to get a good look at it.

Thanks for those great images, Chris! From those we can see that there is colored tape on the prop (with some of it not wrapped all that neatly around it - namely the yellow tape), it does have grooves on (in?) it in several places, the "handle" is a lot thicker than the telescopic section, and it is telescopic.

I'm not sure what its intended use was in "State of Decay", but certainly not a left-behind-Romana's Sonic Screwdriver. The colored tape has been changed and it's never used as a sonic screwdriver in that story. The images are great, though the look of the prop is really different and could confuse some people trying to replicate it. Thanks for the images, though; it does show that even the smallest prop got recycled into other stories (and I love it when props get recycled - or should that be "repurposed"?).

The images from "Horns of Nimon" are priceless, though, and thank you so much for going through the trouble for getting those and posting them.

your welcome, BTW, In the "Horns of Nimon" Romana's sonic gets left behind on the control deck of the Skonnans ship & wasn't retrieved.

Yeah; that's what I meant when I said ..."not a left-behind-Romana's Sonic Screwdriver". I probably could have worded that a little better than I did to mean it couldn't have been Romana's sonic because it was left behind. (Been feeling rather off these past few days, and sometimes having trouble putting words together so they make sense to someone besides me. :P)

Don't panic too much about that, I have that problem ALL THE TIME, put things around the wrong way, say the wrong thing or misinterpret what others are saying, it's called life & getting older. LMAO.  8)

Thanks, Chris. That made me feel a little better. (Still fuzzy in the head, but yet feel a little better.)

while cruising the "gadget reference" posts, I came across this other post on the same subject, maybe some one can link the 2, I don't know how or who does it, cheers.
