Well it has been a while since I last started a new topic here - I have been looking over the many reference images on the site for the Rani's console
and the whole room -- It has become one of my favorite designs and thus I am going to try my best to recreate it in 3D --

So here is the first render of the set with the console (minus controls) --

Ranis%20Console%20room%20Test%201_zpsu2upzqvb.jpg

There is a lot of finishing details still to be added:

- Glass jars for the stands
- Portable Lab Equipment
- Glass shelf
- Door entry way screens
- purple / violet accent lighting

So as always, all comments and any suggestions are always welcomed

Looks great! You've already got way further with it than I did :)

The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,

This does indeed look great. It's also one of those renders I've mentioned that looks like it's an actual real-world build. I'd almost put money on the fact that if you just showed that image to the anyone without telling them it's a 3-D render, they would think it was a photo of the actual set while still under construction. I can't wait to see how this looks once the controls start going on the console!

Thanks for the comments guys  ;D -- I have added a couple of little items to the room for now and I am trying out
some test lighting --

The jars in the actual episodes had the baby dino's in them, but to help save my rendering time I may just keep them as liquid
filled for now -- Once I have added all of the other missing props, I will revisit the jars again --

The next step will be to continue work on the time rotor and the main control panels --

And not a single one looked anything like me! (Well, I suppose I should be relieved at that. ;D ;D ;D)

This looks really really good!!! What modeling/rendering software are you using?
Stay TARDIS fans, my friends. -Fez

Hi Sonicfez, I am using 3DS Max 2011 for the modelling and Mental Ray 2011 for the rendering -- there is some clean up work done with photoshop for over laying the different render passes --

Dino, if I can't put little pics of you in the jars then I will have to go with my original idea --

Almost screen accurate as the ones used in the actual episode --  ;D

Good day all,

Here is a quick update as to where I'm currently with this room --

Ranis%20Console%20room%20Test%203_zps1pgndkla.jpg

I have been able to find some more reference images of the console (mostly taken from the dvd) so I will be working that part
out shortly --

As for the remaining misc pieces of equipment and shelves, I will be making up my reference images this weekend so hopefully I
will get some parts of them modeled as well --

Oslm, you'll find more references for the Rani's console room and console in this topic: http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=1011.0. And if you've got even more reference images from the DVD, please post them in there so we can build up references for that console even more!

And I like how your central column is turning out. Those two attached angled rings are so simple in their design, yet so mesmerizing when you see them spinning. (I know your render probably won't have then spinning, but what you've done with them so far is still magnificent! It's like you could just walk through that door and onto the set. Your skills are amazing!)

Still continuing the work on this one as well --

3 months later and there is just a few more panels to be worked on, sorry about the delay --

Ranis%20Console%20Closeup_zpspbcszhe4.png

The 3 pop-up scanner panels are going to be tricky, but I think I have an idea for those -- I am also
working on one more prop for this set, hopefully I will have an image for you guys later today

Until then ----

Lovely! A little advice, though. I can't prove the dims, but the overall diameter of the console is smaller relative to the central pillar. The shallow domes and the popup scanner are from the same mold trimmed to size. The cluster of angled cylinders around the central shaft of the rotor are clear solid rods.

I had started working on these, but there hasn't been any additional input in years (years!). It would be great to start refining these in the other thread.

Hi Lespaceplie,

Thanks for the comment  ;D  I did see your drawing once before when I started doing the console room and I believe the dimensions of the drawing are in cm?? -- So using that I
took those measurements and came up with the following --

Console%20Scale%20Drawing_zpsy51rcc0u.png

The only major difference between the two drawings is the overall diameter of the console itself -- After trying my best to photo match against the scale drawings of the console room,
I decided to go with a 40" diameter instead of the 30" diameter  -- I found that when I tried to place the 30 half-globes around the console the spacing was to tight and it didn't look
right against the photo reference --

I thought I saw on one of the reference images that the angled cylinders where actually tubes (I may be wrong) and allthough the image doesn't clearly show it they are clear glass --
I need to turn on the lights in the central core to really show the highlights  -- it will only add another 30 mins to the render time  ;D

Also, here is the other prop I am currently working on for this room (well it sort of goes around it and not inside of it)

Waiting%20to%20be%20painted_zpsdljy6qol.png

Thanks again and lets see if we can refine these drawings and get them for everyone else to use.

I estimated the hemis at 12.5 cm / 5 inches in diameter. Though not the highest res, this screen cap is very supportive of a smaller diameter. This console is pretty small, really. Many of the shots placed the actors behind it to make the apparent size larger.

Assuming simple dimensions doesn't always work out, but I bet they did this one quickly. I'm fairly confident of the proportions with perhaps the panel slope being the most iffy of the dims.

Perhaps I can help?

This is only a very quick calculation and is based solely on the last screen-grab posted (which, as Gene/Lespaceplie has stated, isn't very clear).

If we take the height of the circular podium as 150 mm (the standard height of a step in millimeters and the height of the circular podium used in Season 14's Wooden Tardis set), then a quick pixel count gives the following results:

RaniTardis004.jpg

This, in turn, would make the diameter of the hemispheres 100 mm.

Again, I emphasise that this is only a very quick calculation but, it may help.
