Can anyone tell me how deep the box is that holds the phone in either a real Police Box or a TARDIS?
I plan on putting a phone in my TARDIS someday, but I don't have one yet.
I doubt that I'll find an authentic looking phone, so I'll probably settle for an old antique that can be refurbished.
But how big will it be??? There's no way to know, but I need to build that box soon.

How deep did you other TARDIS Builders make your box?
What kind of phone did you use?

Thanks for any help.
Greg.

There are blueprints here somewhere.  Let me see if I can dig them up.

OK.  Not actual measurements, but this is a pretty good reference:  http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=4403.msg66149#msg66149

Last picture.  Looks like the box lines up with where the panels meet the stiles.

This might also help a little: http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=3278.0. I know they're different dimensions than that of a Crich-style box, but at least it's something. There are several images in that topic with different views, and if you open the images in a new tab or window and then click on the image, you'll see it full-size where what measurements they have are easy to read. Some of the measurements are for 1-inch blocks, so at the worst, you could use that as a measure guide and could how many inches deep the cubby is.

Mind you, this is for an actual Met-type box, and not a Classic or New Series TARDIS, so the width and height will be way off, but at least the depth shouldn't make much of a difference (unless it would interfere with how far you can open the main door with that cubby in it).

I hope this helps at least a little.

Dino.
P. S. I've also send a PM to Matt (matt sanders) to see how he's doing, how his Crich replica is coming along, and asking if he has a depth measurement for the phone cubby on the Crich box. I also let him know how much we all miss his build updates and look forward to his return when he's able to.

That's a coincidence! I was going to ask the same thing. :D

I've mentioned before that I've a big refurb planned for my box next year and I've managed to track down a 50's style GPO phone that I can use :)

You lucky b****er, Steve!
I'd love a proper GPO phone, my two are just cheap 'n' nasty modern repro's.

With regards to cubby depth, I got my phone first, then made the box to fit it, so the box didn't look too big or small.

A normal phone will probably need quite a deep box, but I have noticed that some builders who wanted more room in their box, used a shallower cubby & a wall-mounted phone.

I would definitely say get the phone first, then build the cubby to size.

Good luck,

Russell

Thanks for the advice, everyone.
I think Russell's right. Find the phone first, then build the box.
I guess I'll come up with a plan to build the door first and the box later.

Off to search for a suitable phone.

Well, since I asked and got a reply from Matt, I thought I'd post it here anyway (even though it seems like the consensus is to build a cubby around the phone). Anyway, here's what Matt had to say:

Hi Dino,

Yes, I was very busy in the Art Dept on Class for six months, and now I'm doing a few weeks on something else, so haven't made any more progress on the Box, apart from starting to glaze my windows.

As for measurements, while I measured everything on the concrete structure, I don't yet have any dimensions for the wooden stuff inside.  Was planning to finish my walls etc, before dealing with the furniture.

And that's the relevant part; the rest was just idle talk, catching up and such. Sorry I couldn't get anything definitive for the cubby measurements, but from what Matt says I'm guessing that's part of "the wooden stuff inside" he hasn't gotten to yet.

At least we know that he hasn't given up on his Crich replica build, but rather has just been very busy with work - which is good because all of that fiberglass material and wood for the formers and expanding foam can't be cheap, so he's making some good money to replenish what he's put out already, and hopefully building up enough to finish the project. Hopefully we'll be seeing an Update from him once he gets enough of a break from working.

...

The original McKenzie plans do show the box, but do not provide measurements - but they are fairly easy to glean.

The box is approximately 17-18 inches wide, by 13-14 inches high, and around 7 inches deep; it is cut into by the cornerpost, but aligns with the bottom and right of the Telephone Door Panel (as viewed from the outside).  That is, the compartment is both slightly taller than the door, and goes as far left from the door as it can.

Since this was all wooden construction that was almost certainly not pre-fabricated - it is likely each installation varied slightly.  This is pre-MFI/Ikea/accurate measurement days!
