I hate you. ;)

5 seconds ago I had no idea I needed to be able to turn my TARDIS on every night.  The signal lamp is solar so it lights up for a couple hours every night and I light the interior on special nights like Halloween, but generally the windows are dark.

Well done.

Those lights look like LEDs, Russell. They'll last practically forever and cost next to nothing to power. If you wanted to put one standard light bulb in there, with one of those wall/ceiling-mountable sockets, a "60-Watt" LED white bulb would light up everything and use only about 5 Watts of power. (It would be blinding in such a small space, and a 40-Watt LED would probably work just as well and use only about 3.5 Watts, but then you'd have a permanent mount for your light, plenty of light, and little power needed to keep it bright.)

I hope some of this is helpful.

Hi!
Well, it only took me a year to get round to it!
I just really love the look of the TARDIS lit up in the dark, makes it much more noticable, more alive, more "spooky".
I think I'll keep the bulb arrangement as it is (It's certainly bright enough!) I'll just use some more permanent brackets to fix the wires at some stage, rather than just tape, which looks a bit naff.
I'm not worried about the bill as I don't have to pay for it! The Youth Center I hire my hall from pay the leccy bills for me, so it's certainly an improvement from constantly buying new batteries!
I don't actually leave it on all night as I'm only there from five through to about ten. (I wouldn't want anyone to think I was being wasteful or contributing to global warming!)
It does, however, look really cool when people come into my the yard for class & are confronted by a glowing TARDIS! Especially if It's their first lesson!
("Unusual" doesn't quite cover it...!!!)

All the best,

Russell

A lit TARDIS is a happy TARDIS!

I leave my office light on all night, just so when I come up the stairs to bed I'm confronted with a happy TARDIS office. Having a four sided one light up should be mandatory!

Oh... sorry, Russell. For some reason I was thinking this was in front of your house. (Guess I goofed a bit on that. :P)

It still doesn't alter the fact that she looks magnificent. (And those LED lights will help the Youth Center save some money on the leccy bill. It would take those lights a couple of years to expend the amount of energy that a normal incandescent light would in roughly five or six hours... so definitely not contributing to global warming! ;))

That'll be age, mate- I forget what day of the week it is sometimes! :-\
I originally wanted my TARDIS in my back garden, but It's so tall all my grumpy old neighbors would have complained!
So I managed to squeeze it into the yard of the Youth Center where I run my classes.
It's great for my students & the kids who use the center generally.
Plus, I probably spend more time at the center than at home, so I get to see her more!
(I.e: Spend more time ogling my handiwork!)

When I seen the thumbnail to this pic, I thought someone was making a new Tardis column.  ;D

russellsuthern

NOW I know what it reminded me of!
I always thought it looked familiar....
Joking aside, with a bit of jiggery pokery, that would make a cool central column for a scale console build....

Hmmmm.......

Hi guys!

Hope your builds are going well.
Some of you know I have been planning a bit of a repaint on my TARDIS for a while now.
A little voice has been whispering in my ear (mostly Volpone! ;)) to go for the darker blue with white windows look.

Now TARDIS colours are a funny thing....
I love the matt blue with a black sign look, as that's what I grew up with, but the more I look at the real boxes, the more I love that glossy dark blue with white windows & signs.
Of course, the "real" police box look makes it also closer to the Brachaki look, the Cushing look & even the Smith/Capaldi box....
The more things change the more they stay the same!
However, I also liked the little detail of the blue pane of glass Volpone & Bob's yer uncle added to their builds, so I knew I'd have to use that too....
I had a bit of trouble with the blue paint, but eventually used Oxford Blue gloss, which I love. The gloss makes it seem "realer" somehow... it
certainly picks out the texturing beautifully...

So- onto the photos...

First some comparisons between how she used to look & how she looks now...

I'm so pleased with how she turned out...
It's like having a brand new TARDIS!

Hope you like it- any comments gratefully received!

I like the changes you have made. I really like the photos of the old girl before and after. It's like playing a game of spot the differences. Great work as always  :)

Lovely work Russell.

If you scan through the topic (no idea where it is off hand) about the Crich box, some of the pictures I posted of the texture and windows look identical to yours, minus the blue window pane of course!

I would be really happy with your box, hope you are too.

Volpone

That turned out really nice. I always liked your build with the blue-on-blue look, but there's really no comparison to the glossy dark blue with white.  Somehow it just makes it look more substantial and impressive.  Turned out very well.

Angelus Lupus

Dangit, I like both versions a lot!
Ok, I'm drawn to the darker blue, but I really can't decide between the blue or white windows.
It's builds like this that make me realise, if I ever build my own full-scale replica it's got to have reversible blue/white window-frames and several PTO variants.
A mixed-up non-conformist, trying to fit in.

Volpone

I guess the silver lining of an outdoor TARDIS is you have to do at least some painting every year, so you can go back and forth. I'm kind of thinking I want to go back to all blue, but that probably won't happen for at least a year.  Reversible windows *would* be nice--have them on a pivot, so you can just spin them around and change them in a few seconds.  (Of course that wouldn't work with opening windows, but such is life.)

Thanks guys, as always!
Regarding reversible windows.... I'd love to try that, but it would be an awful lot of work.
I'd have to cut my current windows out, make the new ones & secure them in.
My biggest worry would be that my cutting ain't that accurate, so any gaps or cracks would encourage water intrusion & I get enough of that
already!!
So I think I'll just stick to changing things around every couple of years or so. :)

Mark, to say that my texturing & windows reminds you of the Critch box is paying me the highest compliment!
The critch photos as well as Matt's Critch replica build were two of the inspirations for my repaint!
(Although in terms of skill & accuracy, Matt doesn't need to loose any sleep just yet!!)

Regards all,

Russell
