I was looking at my flat-topped "Newbery" model the other day and I realised that nobody seems to make a full-size box of anything other than a Met box or a New Series box.

There's no flat-topped builds out there.  I guess everyone likes a nice stacked roof, but a flat-topped prop would certainly be easier to build.

Hey lorisarvendu!

You said that you could not imagine anyone building a full sized battered Brachaki box?

Why not? If I had the skills of you good people on here that is exactly what I would like to build!

One day I may even try...yes, one day!

i think there was one guy who made a flat-ish top box.... its the guy with the simpsons/drwho exhibit in his signature (sorry i don't recall his name). and scarfwearer's box had a flat roof at first but he latter changed it. i think it all boils down to the builders interpretation of the tardis. when i was building i wanted the features "kinda exaggerated" if iwere to do it again i would have made my wall panels deeper

Also another reason for a flat roof - lack of room height.

No TARDIS in the show had a flat rood - every box, including the Newbery box had some degree of slope to the roof as far as I recall.  Although I'm possibly wrong.

Well yes, I don't mean really flat, but you know the type of TARDIS I mean.  Like you said Newbery, with a very slight slope.  However it seems to me that people only make models of the more (shall we say) disreputable props, like Zbigniev's gorgeous little Troughton/Pertwee number.  I can't imagine someone making a full-sized battered Brachacki box.  If you're going to put one in the garden, it's either an immaculate Met box, or a New Series one for the kids.

To be honest if I ever got round to making a full-size one, I'd want it in pretty good nick too.

My TARDIS has a flat roof.  But then it is, by and large, a pile of s**t.

How do you REALLY feel about it Dale?

My full sized box also has a flat roof.  Like Dale's it's a pile of s**t.   ;)  It was easier, and I had space constraints just like Bill mentioned above.  Although I'm the guy that landed his ship at the top of the stairs....  :)

I'm intrigued.  Surely no TARDIS can ever be truly s**t.  Can you point me to some photos?

Oh, I'm just kidding!  I will admit that I took a lot of shortcuts and didn't finish things properly here and there, but am overall happy with my first box.

It's three sided and doesn't have a back since it's the foyer to my console room.  There isn't even enough clearance for the sign box on the side that faces the wall, so it's not on at current.

I didn't have a lot of room, or money, so I went with a design that used a lot of elements from various boxes and created my impression of the box.

I really wanted a foyer for my console room and that space was only 42" wide and 8 feet tall.  I can't ever take it outside with the state of the roof and the materials used.  It would swell up and rot in no time.  It's a really great indoor box though.

And so you should be!  I emailed the youtube link to another Who fan who works at our place and he was awestruck (he's already jealous of me because I make models).

What's the point of being absolutely accurate if what you end up with isn't exactly what you like?  Anyway the Beeb's had more changes in design than you can shake a Dalek plunger at, so why shouldn't you be just as flexible?

Mind you, it's only Who fans that are picky about what a TARDIS really looks like, and even only a small subset at that, although my mate at work hadn't realised until recently that he had a favourite design (late Baker/Davison).  I did recently try to explain to my wife the differences over the years, but then...after she woke up... ;D

What if the Chameleon Circuit is working and you land in a dung heap?   ;)
My pilot's license? That's out back in the Cessna. Or perhaps you're referring to my license to kill. Revoked. Trouble at the Kazakhstan border.

I could give you the details but then I'd have to kill you, which I can't do because my license to kill has been revoked.

Well, to be fair to my old blue box, it's not her (or my!) fault she looks sh*te.  More to do with the half assed job the supposed "skilled" carpentry person did on her.  I think she looks fine until you reach the windows.  From there up she's a heap, and really needs sorting out.  She'll get there one day.
