Ok thanks.  Do you know who the manufacturer is?  Like what company produces it?  Maybe they might ship to the US?

The manufacturer is MASSIVE LIGHTING a Belgium company.  ;D 5 minutes to Beligum ;D
They have a .pdf catalog. the lamp is on page 184 under Outdoor Lighting
Now I wait to see if they reply to my email.

Awesome!!!  Thank you!  I've been looking online for them but have never seen who the manufacturer was.

Great find! Any chance somebody can post the diameter of the actual lens on these two - 180 and 360 degree versions if you have them. Cheers!

I choose...the cup of a carpenter!  ;)

Seriously that's a neat collection!  I'm kind of a nut for lanterns even though I don't have a lot of them.  (Working on a design for a good seebeck/peltier tealight lantern using a joule thief to power the LEDs.)

That said the lantern in the middle front bottom of the second picture would be my choice for a custom Tardis topper.  It's just different enough for me to like and a bit more industrial than the rest.

Good god it just goes to show that fresnel lenses are still very much available and are still in use today. It does make me wonder though whether the production team for doctor who back in 2005 actually searched for fresnel lenses or if they just decided to go with any old light fitting such as the B-Q garden lantern fitting they ended up using on the tardis props back then.

Well, at least in the US (around the Virginia coast anyway) "real" Fresnel lenses can be pricey. The "jelly jar" porch lights which come close aren't too expensive, but maybe the new production team felt they weren't of enough quality for bringing the series back with the "In your face!" impact they wanted to (and IMHO did) achieve. After all, with the action level of "Rose" and all the other details in that episode thrown at us so quickly they might have thought the last thing anyone would notice was the light on top of the police box, especially since in times past it looked like nothing more than a paper tube. (No complaints, though; I didn't mind the paper tube look. Come to think of it, there isn't much I mind about what they do, really. Or to paraphrase from an interview with "Dilbert" in a TV Guide some years ago: "I love all things 'Who'.")

Someone else found an outlet for new fresnels that cost half of that used one.  Check out the other fresnel threads.

Quote from: jjchambers board=general thread=1181851901 post=1181851901I came across this just by chance whilst doing "the day job", and it may be just the thing for a new series type build.  Have a look for yourselves, see what you think...

EDIT: If you can't get the link to work, go to www.edisposals.com, click on "Ships" and look over at their "Top Seller" area.  You should find for £100 a ship's navigation light with the right sort of fresnel lens for a TARDIS build...  If and when I ever get mine started, it's the sort of thing I would probably use.

Cheers!

Blimey - that's rather expensive. I procured mine from Nauticalia a few years ago and it was only £25. I just asked for the lens and not the surrounding lamp and they were happy to oblige.

Watch out; that's not a full 360-degree fresnel.

If it's a lens from a starboard running light its arc will be 112.5 degrees. However, if it's a lens off of a lighted buoy it could be 360 degrees. (I've got one of those, and it's huge - about 10 inches in diameter; nicked it about 20 years ago from a buoy that was being scrapped.) Unless you're dealing with a very small buoy, a lighted buoy lens will be larger than any TARDIS lens (and buoy lenses don't usually come in clear).

If you go to the craigslist link, from the other pictures it appears to be only a half-lens.  And yes, very green.
