Hmmmmm.....

Quite frustrated.
My box is really starting to need some work done - leaks filling & a re paint etc, but it has literally rained almost every day this month.
I'm hoping for a better July or August, or things ain't gonna get done.... >:(

Russ
I feel your pain... The lamp on mine needs some work, but the weather is just awful at the moment.

These things need constant maintenance, but finding a break in the weather is almost impossible, sometimes.

Priceless. Absolutely priceless!  ;D

You brought a smile to my face with that David!

Hi all!

Hope you are all well.

Although I am between builds at the moment, I'm always on the lookout for bits & bobs that might come in useful.
We did a car boot sale recently & I found a plastic toy phone. It was a Halloween thing, basically when you lift the receiver it makes ghostly groans & screams at you. It looked a bit naff but I got it for only £4 & I was sure I could do something with it...

20160912_174346.jpg

A close up shows that the weathering they used looks really rubbish!

20160912_174400.jpg

I gave it a going over with some silver & black paint left over from my Dalek build & this is the result. Looks much better doesn't it?!

I was planning to do some more subtle weathering on it. I'm sure most of you know that if you gently sand over the edges with fine sandpaper it takes off the black & leaves the silver which gives it that weathered look. However, I like it so much the way it is I decided not to fiddle with it any more. I can always try it later if I want to.

Here it is in situ...

I do like my old phone, but I think this one does look a bit more antiquey & interesting.
I might swap them over regularly depending on my mood!

Thanks for reading.

Amazing what you can do with a bit of spray paint. I wonder if you can customise the screams to something more Who-ish?

I like both, but I prefer your original.

davidnagel

Lovely, but did you remove the sound circuit for the screams and moaning? ;)

But guys, what says Dr Who more than screaming? (After all, have you SEEN Time & The Rani? ;))

I actually took the batteries out because it was faulty & kept going off on it's own & I didn't want to disturb the neighbours!
Probably why they sold it in the 1st place!

I love that phone! I want it to put in my library! It would go perfectly with the quasi-Victorian decor! And those Halloween sounds would totally match our personalities! (We do keep one or two Halloween decorations out all year round; one is the glow-in-the-dark skull named Yorick, and the other is a plastic rat skeleton with a black cloak the wife made for it, and his name is, of course "Death of Rats".)

Great find, Russell!

Hi guys!

Dino, you should inscribe a pentagram on the top of your glowing skull & you'd have a great "Image of the Fendhal" prop!
( Not so sure about the rat- a failed Magnus Greel experiment?)

You guys over the pond absolutely love Halloween, but every year over here it gets bigger & bigger. It's great fun to see everybody in their fancy dress!

All the best,

Russell

Not a bad idea, Russell! :D I'd get a different skull for that, though. Yorick is one of those glow-in-the-dark plastic model skulls that I put together when I was - well, back in the 1970s. Not sure that kit still exists so I wouldn't want to damage this one, especially considering that he's survived growing up with me, and all of those military moves that destroyed so many of my other belongings. And while I've got my library set up like the Jeremy Brett 'Holmes'' sitting room set - or as close as I can to that - the wife like having Yorick on the mantle a la 'Sherlock'. (Since he's always been out year round, now we've actually got a reason to keep him out.)

This one isn't mine, but it's much like it. (Mine's cloak is in the wash. It gets dusty very quickly: probably the black fabric.) "Death of Rats" - the late Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.)

Would you care to see a few snaps of my yard, and what the kiddies over here have to get through to earn their treats? <he asks laughing like Renfield>
Yard.jpg
First the front yard. The kiddies have to get through all of this spookiness to make it to my front door. This is what it looks like taken with a flash...

GlowyGraveyard.JPG
...and here's a close-up of that graveyard in the background, without a flash and with the black lights going full blast! (Just about everything in the yard is covered with that paint, so those black lights really make things look eerily green.)

As for the fancy dress...
Ghoul.jpg
...here's me (taken with a flash), done up like a Voodoo Ghoul you'd expect to see in those B movies. In the black lights, that shirt glows "warp engine blue" and the face paint is all greenish.

Wifey.jpg
And possibly the creepiest of all, the wife, taken without a flash, waiting for the kiddies. (On this particular night we had some teens talking trash about my house and the decor; as they approached the graveyard where I was waiting to "ghoul" them, they neared the wife sitting in the walkway reaching out like that; one of them exclaimed "Oh, HELL no!", turned and took to his heels and didn't stop until he turned the corner as his friend shouted "Wait for me!" with his voice cracking like Shaggy.

Ha! Talk trash about my Halloween decor, will they? (Not again, I think.) We had loads of parents screaming that night as well. We've been doing this for 23 years now, and the kids we scared once before are now bringing their kids to the house to get scared. It's like "Parents' Revenge Night", as for all their misdeeds during the year, the parents smile and say "This looks like a fun place; let's stop here!" and pull their kids behind them, with the kids digging furrows into the ground with their heels while shouting "NOOOO!"

We're sort of an icon in the neighborhood. The wife once heard a mother trying to control her unruly child in a grocery store say "If you don't behave, on Halloween I'm going to take you to that creepy house around the corner from the school!"... and the kid settled down as though he was a statue.

So, yes, at least at my house, we live Halloween!

And now back to our regularly scheduled Topic of Discussion. ;D

Great set of pics, Dino, although, as you say, somewhat off tropic, but so what!

The great thing about being a Dr Who fan is that a lot of Dr Who costumes can also double up as Halloween costumes:

Mummies, weeping angels, clockwork robots, giant spiders, Taran wood Beast (no wait, hang on, scratch that last one...) ;)

Cheers,

Russell

Great build I like it a lot. This version I liked the chunkier style of the box yours is a great version of this.

russellsuthern

Hi all!
Well, I've been tinkering with my box (If you've got one you might as well tinker with it...)
The chameleon circuit is still broken, but I did manage to address another issue that's been bugging me.
Up till now the lighting for my TARDIS interior has been battery powered...
20160929_141056.jpg
20160929_141102.jpg

Trouble is it ends up costing a fortune in batteries!
So I finally got round to hooking the thing up to the mains...
20160929_141119.jpg
20160929_141148.jpg

It's a bit of a lash-up at the moment, the wires are just held up by tape, but I'll get round to fixing up some proper brackets in due course.

This is how they look...

20160929_192527.jpg
20160929_192535.jpg

Means I can have the thing on all night now if I want!

All the best,

Russell
