Dom is right. Tenth planet DVD wasn't just a straight transfer. The Restoration Team worked hard on all the releases - only with regards to the lack of animation on Web and Menace was out their control. Animation was planned for Menace but cancelled by 2:e - a move which in the light of the Power animation seems to make even less sense.

Tenth Planet on DVD follows all the other releases though. Good clean up work, lots of bonus material (including the vhs linking material and telesnap recon) and a fully animated episode 4, which in my opinion is far from "honky" :)

Kinda looks like they've pasted two halves of two pictures together and shoved Patrick on top to hide the join.....

Those photo-roundels aren't a patch on mine!  Otherwise, I quite like the look of this.

Wow, Rassilonsrod! I think the review said "hokey", I pretty sure you didn't mean "honky"... that means something really different!

Probably just a type on Marc's part, The Jason. (And I'm familiar with "honky" - it was all over the place in the '70s; all you need to do is watch a few episodes of 'All In The Family' or its spin-off 'The Jeffersons' to hear it thrown about!)

That is great news! I'll be moving that DVD from the 'Save for later' section into my actual Amazon basket and buying it tomorrow!

Maybe just wanted to get 'Web' and 'Menace' out there because of all the "fan conspiracy theory" grumblings, and they're waiting for a "special edition" release while they work on the animated episodes. (And it would mean more money that way because you know everyone would buy the special edition as well.)

That's good to know. I've already got some of the stories with the animated episodes and I agree: nothing wrong with the animation. I think some of those reviewers have gotten spoiled by the animation style of 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' and 'Star Wars Rebels', and all other animation like that, and probably think anything else is "hokey". (And I corrected your typo in your quote, Marc, just to avoid further controversy.)

Hi Dino

You are correct it is 12th rater than 14th.

Thanks for the verification, Dom. I certainly don't want to miss it!

Quote from: domvar on Sep 08, 2016, 07:10 am
TP4 is fully animated and that is where my clip is from the vhs version is included as an extra.

A big THANK YOU! to you and everyone else that verified this for me! I have the VHS version from years ago, but when my VHS player died, I couldn't watch it anymore. The same with my VHS of "The Invasion" (with Nocholas Courtney giving brief synopses of the missing episodes to fill in the gaps) and "Shada" (with Tom Baker's great gap-filling narration). I've got DVDs of those now.

Problem with amazon is they carry over the vhs reviews to the subsiquent dvd.

I was starting to suspect that, so thank you for confirming it. I've noticed they do the same thing with books an other items. You would think it'd be better for their customers if they separated things into categories: VHS (keep those reviews there), and DVD (put the new reviews in there). But then that's just me. (Seriously, Amazon could organize their reviews a little better than they do.)

Quote from: domvar on Sep 08, 2016, 07:10 am
The following DVD's have fully animated Missing eps:-

Reign of terror
Tenth Planet
Ice Warriors
Moonbase
Invasion

I've got "Reign of Terror" and "Invasion". I'll be looking for the others once I get "Tenth Planet" into my Amazon Basket! A question about "The Moonbase": many of the reviews I've seen on that one say that something went wrong with the transfer from PAL (UK format) to NTSC (US format) and the DVD plays slower than normal speed. Reviewers have said they timed things because "something sounded wrong", and the episodes run a minute longer than they should. Some people say it's only really noticeable with the opening and closing credits, and occasionally when the Doctor goes into a rant over something, while others say it's like watching the story in slow motion.

Now, to me, a 24-minute episode running for 25 minutes doesn't seem like it would make that much difference; you're only dragging each minute of episode out about 1 to 2 seconds each. More reviews say the buyers have notified 2e (or whoever released that story after they made the PAL to NTSC conversion) and the Vendor said they are aware of the error in transfer rates, but have no plans to correct the error - nice business practice there: know something is broke, but don't bother to fix it.

But has anyone watched "The Moonbase" recently? And what did you think of the DVD quality? Is it messed up that badly?

Quote from: domvar on Sep 08, 2016, 07:10 am
The underwater menace and web of fear do not.

I saw that in "Web" when I bought it, but that doesn't bother me; it doesn't have as many of the word scrolling as "The Tenth Planet" did on the VHS version. I wasn't aware "The Underwater Menace" was out. I just might get that one as well. I've got very few Troughton DVDs and I need to add more, especially since his era has the most missing stories/episodes.

Once again, thank you, Dom, and everyone else for these clarifications. (I love this Forum, and everyone on it!)

Much as it won't spoil my enjoyment of the forthcoming POTD animation, I have to admit I was a little disappointed that the illustrated Tardis prop doesn't match the 1966 Brachacki refit...

Kingpin

It was probably easier for them to grab photos of the TY-J box at the Experience, than draw up a refitted Brachacki box (though they could've "illustrated over" a 3D model of one).

Restoration Team Article on Underwater Menace

This was very interesting, and sad at the same time. Knowing the money that was going to be made from the sale of this story, why not allow the Restoration Team to make every effort to turn out the best job they can? Even when the Team offered to go to extra lengths at no additional cost the "bosses" still placed so many restrictions placed upon them it's mind-boggling! Still, at least we have another Troughton story to enjoy.

But as the saying goes, "Where there's life, there's hope", so maybe one day there will be another release of "Underwater Menace" with animated episodes. All it would take is new management with someone that actually gave a frack in the chair, and the Restoration Team could work wonders on all of the stories.

Dino.
P. S. And Yvette Fielding is taking a tour of BBC Television Center with Davison, Janet Fielding (I wonder it they're related), and Mark Strickson. Interesting... I wonder if she'll be dragging the rest of her 'Most Haunted' crew with her as well. :)

Somehow I don't think the RT will be called upon to do this anymore. In the end they had nothing to do with the releases  (despite compiling the extras and the highly restricted recon). When it seemed UW would not come out at all, Steve Roberts had commented that the range was dead. The whole thing was out of their hands already.

Power is also a collaboration between BBC Worldwide and BBC America.

2!entertain are also out of the loop now, it would seem.

No most haunted crew but the doc is really good (The other half is on the visitation SE)

I don't thing they are related as Janet was born Janet Claire Mahoney but Yyvette was born a Fielding :).

With the wealth of material to reference, how they get these things wrong is beyond me. Surely if they were animating the episode they would have looked at stills for costume, props and set?

There's a costume continuity error in The Invasion.

While they had been checking the existing material for references, apparently nobody working on the animation bothered to follow the story  ;D

Are the people behind all of this nuts? Don't they realize the gold mine they're sitting on? Working their way through the stories to restore and complete then via animated episodes by finishing all those with only one missing, and then two (and going by their "50%" rule) three missing if there are six or more episodes, they could make a fortune! I can understand if they only have one episode with three or more missing - or like 'The Dalek Master Plan' where they've only got three of the original 12 - they would need some serious backing to reconstruct those, but all of the stories on hand that are mostly complete could be completed and bring them a lot of money. Fans that haven't seen those since their original airing - or haven't seen them at all - would be flocking to the stores to buy them!

Power is also a collaboration between BBC Worldwide and BBC America.

I think that maybe those two should collaborate more often, and take up where those other morons are dropping the ball. Get BBC Workdwide and BBC America together with the Restoration Team and all collaborate to get as many stories as possible restored and on the shelves. They'll be lucky of they can keep the shelves stocked!

2!entertain are also out of the loop now, it would seem.

And that is a shame. Put those guys together with the above three and I just know they could complete as many stories as possible, and then just rake in the money as those restored stories fly off the shelves faster than they can be restocked.

The logic - or lack thereof - of some people really makes be scratch my head sometimes.

I believe Mark Ayres is working on the audio for power though he is not allowed to talk about it yet.

Yep though this may have a lot to do with the issues surrounding the value of the pound

Despite the logo appearing for spine consistency they have not actually existed since 2010 as when Woolworth's went under the BBC bought out their share and it merged back into BBCWW.

Ah, so although the corporate entity "2 Entertain" doesn't exist any more, the team that comprised it still does, and are still producing the DVDs, only under the name of BBC Worldwide?  So actually the same people are doing the same work as before, only the name has changed.
