The news is out via BBC America's and Doctor Who TV's Facebook pages and web sites: "The Power of the Daleks" is ready to celebrate its 50th Anniversary, restored in the same way as the other Troughton stories and a Hartnell have been done with animation mixed with surviving audio and scripts to piece it all together!

BBC America site article

The BBC's site, Doctor Who TV, even has a brief but intriguing preview video of the upcoming story, which is set to be televised this November!

Hopefully it will be available on DVD soon after (it would make a fantastic Christmas present for anyone).

Now if they would only do the same with Hartnell's final story, "The Tenth Planet" and Episode 4, then we would have the tie-in complete, with the first regeneration ever seen, taking us through every single regeneration (ever seen) from the First Doctor to the Twelfth!

The regeneration from the TTP episode 4 animation.

In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

Kinda looks like they've pasted two halves of two pictures together and shoved Patrick on top to hide the join.....

Oh God! What have they done to poor Pat's face?! :P
Also, that TARDIS background looks really cheap...
Couldn't they have asked the same people who did the Reign of Terror trailer?

No mate - they should have asked our very own Rob Semenoff! (Mind you, I've been told that a few of my diagrams have appeared elsewhere on the old 'interweb' and, so too, has at least one of yours!)

I must say I'm looking forward to Power of the Daleks, even if it is animated; I haven't seen it since it was first shown when I was five-and-a-bit years old (showing my age there) and the Dalek 'production line' looks better than the surviving footage from the episode!  :)

Me too. Considering how much time I spent staring at the sets, it's got a special place in my heart :)

How terrible of me... I didn't even notice the odd shape of that console till you pointed it out rassilonsrod.

But then again, until now I hadn't seen a larger version of that image so maybe I'm forgiven...

I  didn't even notice you had a link to the page where I got the image from - I just pasted it in here after I made a similar comment on Facefriend :D

This is awesome news, what's with all the animation hate? It's not perfect, but it's allowing them to revive a totally DEAD episode. I'd be grateful to seed this one done even if it was with stick figures! I am super excited about this awesome news. I hope it makes money so they do MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, Dom. If the web sites are correct, BBC America is broadcasting "Power" on the 12th November. (That's the Saturday when they usually air 'Doctor Who'. I'll have to check that site again because the 14th is a Monday, and maybe they're going to air it on the actual 50th anniversary date of the initial broadcast.)

Er... well... sort of, but not really. I mean I did see the DVD on Amazon, but there wasn't much in the description other than a synopsis of the story. And the reviews of it ranged from:

"The soundtrack exists but not the film, so, if you want to watch it, you have to put up with the hokey animation", to

"The reconstruction of the unfortunately missing final episode is surprisingly and absolutely brilliant. The audio track is complete and there are stills that refresh every couple of seconds. The only times that I was reminded that it was a reconstruction was when lines of text would scroll across the bottom of the screen to depict what was happening or when brief clips of actual film would delightfully appear. And the regeneration scene is complete."

And those are just two of many like them. So with reviews so mixed like that I wasn't sure what I was looking at: the VHS version (which I have) transferred to DVD, or a new DVD version with Episode 4 fully animated a la "The Invasion", "Reign of Terror". (If someone can clarify what is on that "Tenth Planet" DVD I would be eternally grateful, and would throw it into my - well, my wife's - Amazon basket yesterday!)

Thanks for this link, Dom! It explains a little more about the missing episode's reconstruction, but it's still a little vague in places ("original audio and off-screen stills"?). I know I'm rather dim at times, but what do they mean by that?

Well, I've at least got this in the "Save for later" part of the Amazon basket! (I just don't want to buy a DVD copy of the VHS version.)

Thanks again, Dom!

I agree there, The Jason! Even if the animation was along the likes of "Teen Girl Squad" it would still bring "dead" episodes back for us to enjoy. And with the fan base 'Doctor Who' has across the planet, these people animating the missing episodes must know there's money to be made by making these episodes come to life again. So, as you say: "MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Hi Dino

You are correct it is 12th rater than 14th.

TP4 is fully animated and that is where my clip is from the vhs version is included as an extra.

Problem with amazon is they carry over the vhs reviews to the subsiquent dvd.

Untitled.png

The following DVD's have fully animated Missing eps:-

Reign of terror
Tenth Planet
Ice Warriors
Moonbase
Invasion

The underwater menace and web of fear do not.

Cheers
