That all depends on what aspect you're viewing things from. In the Classic TARDIS props, you had the more rectangular panels and thicker-looking window frame muntons, but the prop itself was far smaller than any real Police Box of the day. In the New Series, all of the TARDIS props are closer to the size of an actual Police Box, but they lack the rectangular panels and proper window frames.

So, it's sort of a give-and-take. If one could take a New Series TARDIS prop back to the 1960s and place it on a street corner, and put one of the Classic Series TARDIS Props on a neighboring corner, I'd almost bet that if you stopped 10 people and asked them if they could call up a policeman for you, just based on size 9 of those 10 - if not all 10 - would try using the New Series prop because they would all know that Police Boxes weren't as small as the Classic TARDIS props were (too narrow and too short).

I've always been of the opinion - and I am unanimous in this - that the "perfect" TARDIS prop would be an original Brachacki built to the scale of a New Series prop.

Moffat, are you listening? ;)

At a guess, from everything I've seen and heard, I'd say... no.

Ah, yes; the Cushing prop. That one has to be the closest to an actual Police Box that I've ever seen. (Too bad they blew it to pieces in 'The New Avengers' episode "Target" back in the mid 1970s.)

I actually liked those two films. In fact, I've got the DVD box set that came with "Doctor Who and the Daleks", "Daleks - Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.", and the "Dalekmania" documentary. (Now I want to pull them out of the cabinet and watch them again! ;D)

I know in those films "Doctor Who", as he's actually called (which grates on some peoples' nerves, I know, but they did call the Doctor "Doctor Who" in the Hartnell story "The War Machines", which doesn't really make it any better), and Cushing's Doctor was an Earthling scientist - genius inventor - but he was the only "Doctor" to wear a moutstache and one that I never had to shave off to portray when I went to a Con!

Long live the moustache! (I would love to see one of the later Doctors regenerate with a moustache, just to see how long he keeps it before fan mail has him say something like "Hang on a tick..." then dash off into another part of the TARDIS, and return a few moments later without the 'stache and say "There; that's better. Sure, it may have looked nice, but it was starting to make me itch." Either that, or if that Doctor is a popular actor, have him say "Oh! I've grown a moustache! I've always wanted to try one of those. Moustaches are classy!" and see how many people start growing moustaches! ;D ;D ;D)

I was pondering this earlier... I think the battered Brachaki prop fits my idea of what the TARDIS should look like. I haven't liked any of the props since 2005, but they are the size of a traditional MET box. I really hope Chris Chibnall goes back to the drawing board and gives us a nice, small, battered wheezing groaning blue box.

My favourite changes, there are times when the Original Brachaki jumps to the top, and others when the TYJ calls to me (mainly those stories where it isn't falling apart), because it was the first Tardis I remember on TV. Then again, I've long had a soft spot for the solid and substantial looking Hudolin.

And another photo!

(The left door (the one with SJA sign) looks a bit wonky in this pic too...)
Also, some questions...
There are multiple Capaldi boxes, aren't there?
So was the refurbishment of the signs carried out on all the boxes, or just one?
Or is this a new box?
And why does the box in Class still have the old signs?

Maybe we could have a prop accurate to the real police boxes, and have Bill tell the Doctor exactly how inaccurate the TARDIS is to a real police box, and how pointless it would be to put a sign on anyway, as nobody in their right minds would mistake the TARDIS for a real box.

Moffat, are you listening? ;)

Well, I doubt Bill would ever do that, as the real police boxes went out of commission long before she was even born, so she, along with a large proportion of Dr Who's viewers, have never even SEEN a real police box... Just sayin'....

Well I meant if they travel back to the 60s and see an actual police box (or an exact replica of one)...

Angelus Lupus

Yeah, but then they'd have to build an accurate Police Box, just to point out how inaccurate the Tardis is...
Chances are they'd just do exactly what they did last time a 'real' Police Box was needed (Logopolis): use a spare Tardis prop.

In fiction, the TARDIS attempts to resemble something that looks like a Police Box, but doesn't always get it right (fiction compensating for a lack of attention to detail!!). In reality, the prop has never 100% accurately mimicked an actual Police Box.

That said, the current *general* shape and proportions have now been in use for over 11 years - maybe it's set to stay that way?

If that's the case, I wish they'd give it a bit of a bash and some obvious texture/weathering. Yes, I know it's all subjective, but for 2010 onwards - it just looks too sodding 'clean'.  :)

Sorry, see what you mean.
Although I still think Bill wouldn't notice much difference between the two.
It's only us prop fanatics who obsess over every little difference.
99% of people would barely notice there was a difference & those who did notice wouldn't give a rat's a** (to quote an American friend of mine.)
I personally would love the TV prop look EXACTLY like a real Metbox, but I know i'm in the minority (compared to the vast majority of Dr Who's audience)
It's like the discussion on the Bradley Box from AAISAT, the average viewer just doesn't care whether it looks exactly like the Brachacki or not.
Some friends of mine who are avid Dr Who fans, never miss an episode but when I started warbling on about different TARDIS types you could literally see their eyes glaze over...
It's the same with Daleks. I remember being at a fete years ago & they had a couple of fan builds which looked great, but were based on the Radio Times plans, they looked absolutely NOTHING like the real Dalek props (to my eyes, anyway!) But everyone was banging on about how excited they were to see genuine, screen used Daleks from Dr Who in real life!
We (TB members & the like) care passionately about the accuracy of the various Dr Who props, but seriously, no one else does!!

All the best,

Russell

Angelus Lupus

I don't mind that the Tardis isn't an exact Metbox replica, (even the Metboxes had differences between them) but there are several aesthetic things I'd like to change about the NST props.
The panels: we all know they're far too square; the corner posts should've had the quarter-round, and the weird cut-out (routed part) at the top? Never understood that decision, either.. I'm also one of those that wouldn't mind if the top signs reverted to not being full width. All of this, plus the 'flat' look (a result of the lack of detail on the posts, and not having the three-stepped section) and the gloss blue can make the NST (especially the 2010 onwards) look very toy-like.
http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=2696 shows what a difference the posts can make. Now if only it had the three steps...

I agree with all the above, except I do like a nice dark blue gloss finish, although it should be all nicely weathered just like the Hudolin paintwork.

When it comes time for the BBC guys to build a new TARDIS prop (if anyone from there ever reads this), what I've always said I'd love to see is the Original Brachacki TARDIS build on the size scale of a New Series TARDIS. (Paint scheme, weathering, and signage and wording, even the blank St. John logo included. ;))
