If you read Mark's own website, you'll see that the actual console was built for the 50th Anniversary Trailer (though at that stage only the tree sides facing the camera were complete and the 'rotor' was seated lower down within the framework than was normally televised in the 'classic' series (I assume because there was no raising/lowering mechanism fitted at this stage)). Again if you read Mark's site, he's been working to create the remainder of the Console over the last couple of years - it's the culmination of his hard (and excellent) work which is now on display in Cardiff.

Oi! You're only 528 miles away! You could make that visit into a nice holiday and travel by car. I've been looking at the wall construction pictures on Flickr and also the diagrams on this forum. The diagram says the wall should be 100.39" tall, or 8.33 feet. Isn't the standard for plywood sheets 4'x8'? So either they do make plywood longer than 8' or the gap between the roundels isn't a full 2". His images show one piece of plywood, maybe a quarter inch thick and maybe 21.5 wide. Anyone care to offer input on height?

Are those metric inches? We've fallen foul of that before: the BBC used metric inches on its plans.

It's metric feet we've fallen foul of. 

Inches are always inches.

But the season 15 plan is in millimetres anyway

However, that extra .33 feet in the height (which is roughly 4 inches) could be taking into account additional wood used either on top or bottom of the wall panel for added structural integrity, or the height added by the casters for rolling the wall section aside, or both.

In Mark's video you can see the joins in the walls which contain three columns of roundels. This suggests that the roundels were cut at the same time from sheets of plywood stacked together for cutting purposes - and the middle column of roundels (one of the sheets of plywood) has been turned the other way up during assembly to create the final 'honeycomb' effect.

Wow, that console looks amazing -- and what fantastic timing!  I'm visiting England this week and will be going for my very first trip ever to the Doctor Who Experience on Thursday.  Can't wait!!   

(Anyone fancy coming along??  Mrs. Dalex isn't so keen on the long journey from London so I'm going solo.)

He actually had a picture on his page of a single sheet with a jigsaw laying on top. I don't think I can repost it here but it shows more than half of a circle at the bottom. I'm wondering if maybe there is indeed a splice to get those last few inches previously discussed. To me it looks like quarter inch plywood, maybe 23.5" wide (19.5 plus 2 on each side). Then on the back he's got some one inch board framing the back. Looks like maybe a half inch from the edge of the board and from the cutout so that's why I was thinking two inches on each side (half inch, one inch board, half inch, cut hole). I can't figure out how he attached the columns together or what he used to line the cut hole with to get the depth. 2-3" depth maybe?

As far as I know Mark did use the Season 15 plans when building the walls, so there is 2 inches between each roundel.

oma, I presume the walls are either set like that where they are using a clamp of some kind, or maybe they are cleverly hinged from behind! I wonder if its possible to see behind the walls at the Experience..... Dalex? Can you confirm on Thursday?
