What type of miter saw do I need for the roof?

Am I thinking correctly that I need a compound miter saw?  If so, brands & model suggestions would be a great help. I'll be using the saw for other projects in future, and I usually buy with a "you get what you pay or" mindset. P

No. Not at all.   :)
The length of a roof panel side is far greater than most mitre saws can cut.   You want to carefully measure/mark your panel then cut it on a table saw or with a skill/jig saw of some sort.  You can cut it with your blade set to a slight angle or shave off the flat edge to help them mate closely afterwards. Half the work in a TARDIS build is thinking about how to do it, good on you for picking our brains!

Dewalt and Ryobi are just two brands I can think of off the top of my head that make compact, portable table saws. Some are even table-top table saws. Just Google "table saw", or check out your home improvement stores for more brands and models. That should get you through nicely.

I hope this is helpful.

Just my two cents.

I use a Skill Saw for rough cutting large sheets of plywood into smaller pieces or odd shaped pieces.
I use a table saw for precision cuts on plywood and ripping long pieces of wood into narrower pieces.
I use a miter saw for cutting narrow pieces of wood to length (maybe 6 or 8 inches wide, depending on your saw).

If I could have only one saw, it would probably be the table saw. As far as brand or model, I say buy what you can afford. If you're only going to be using it for this one project, then even the cheapest tool will work fine (for awhile), but if you plan on using the saw for a long time, then the more expensive saw will last longer and cut better. Even if you chose a cheap saw, buy the better saw blade for smoother cuts.

Even the best saw in the world only works as well as the guy holding the tape measure and pencil. The roof was the hardest part of my TARDIS build. I ended up with a couple of large gaps because it wasn't perfectly square... all the weird angles... poor measuring... not enough arms to hold everything together......etc.  I'm thankful for caulking, Spackle, fiberglass, sandpaper and paint.
