Tedious real-life stuff has got in the way of the build, but I've had some time to work on the photographic blowup walls some more.  This has to be the most maddening bit of image tweaking I've done, but am reasonably happy with the results, given the available source material (the photo I used as a basis, though fairly sharp, was a little distorted and dark, so initially some detail got missed out, especially in the shadowed areas).  Anyway, here's my best guess so far...

(Edit: Oops! Better-defined image put up at 16.00)

Here's a close-up.  I'm sure there's plenty of room for improvement.  Suggestions welcome!

(Edit: Replaced with moderately sharper image at 16. 40)

i may use those walls, i couldnt find a descent image of this on the internet, your build is coming along nicely, cant wait to see more

Tried doing this myself a few years back. Got absolutely nowhere. Nice job.

Yes indeed, I had a go at this myself after posting above, but I won't sidetrack your thread with my stuff :)

I hope you don't mind if I print it out huge and put it on the wall behind my console... :)

Thanks for all the encouraging comments, folks.  Hoped putting my photo-roundels up in their current state might at least give people something to work with.

Those of you who've spent time trying to do this will be familiar with the condition of Roundel Blindness.  Took some screengrabs from Unearthly Child today and, oh dear, I can see all sorts of things that need work.

Also, I'm not entirely sure that the photo-walls we see in the later stories are the same ones from the earliest episodes.  Even allowing for different lighting (and the fact the walls are not always the same way up), there seem to be inconsistencies, such as the amount of space between each disc, levels of detail and contrast, etc.

Ironically, another problem with the endless tweaking was, I think, a loss of the 'photographic' feel to the image, and I'll try a different tack when I have another go.

celation

Yeah - one of the small things is that there's an annoying slight perspective shift across the roundels as they become more front-on to the camera on the right-hand side of the image.

There are also the changes you've mentioned. An approximation could be done using a gradient across the image, and grading contrast etc. through it in different ways.

There's also a level of grain and dirt across the whole image which could be added back to help restore the photographic feel.

Comparing it to photos and snaps from Power though, for example, your version looks brilliant. Wouldn't know the difference at all.

Later stories like Mind Robber seem to have the walls possibly reprinted and turned 90 degrees anticlockwise.

It would be brilliant if the original photo exists somewhere. I'm sure I've seen it reprinted somewhere years back. No idea where, though...

Thanks, Celation.  I've been watching the progress of your full-size Hartnell console with awe.  Am delighted that you'd want to put my roundelling effort next to it!

Don't think I've ever seen that elusive source photo.  Having one sharp, properly face-on image of just a single roundel would make all the difference.

Edit: 31/8/11:  I do remember seeing a feature on (interview with?) Brachacki in a magazine somewhere in the 90s.  Might have been DWB or The Frame?  It featured a photo of his original cardboard design model for the control room.  Maybe they had the photo roundels too?

Slowly bringing this build back from the dead.  Mostly been working on various elements of the control room, but in the meantime here's some modest progress made with the console itself.

Test fitting the control panels.  Am making sure that number 3 corresponds with the panel identified as such in The Time Monster!  The covers on two of the three plinth service hatches are based on a version briefly glimpsed in The Edge of Destruction, before it lost its hinged door (see inset pic). The slots cut on the upper ends of the plinth core will hopefully allow a little of the light from beneath the central column to come through and provide a modicum of illumination beneath each control panel.

Thought the console looked quite nice in this monochrome state, so here's a couple of pics before we go green and start adding the controls proper.

As well as the two hinged plinth hatch doors, I'm having one blank plate over the other hatch, as seen in The Dead Planet.  I want this model to look like a BBC prop, so the resulting mis-match of covers on the plinth should add a little verisimilitude!

Liking your work very much and love the roundels pic. I keep meaning to make a 5inch figure original console but not got round to it yet.

Thanks, time-and-tide, for your kind words about this old and sadly neglected thread!

Have been meaning to get it together enough to post a worthwhile update on this for months.  In the meantime, here are some progress pics of the console.  Well, I say progress - having got the proportions wrong, I more or less scrapped the version you saw before and started again.  Only the main hexagonal board survived the reboot.

These pics themselves are now quite old, and a little more progress has been made on the console, main walls and sundry bits and pieces, photos of which I hope to put up fairly soon.  The hexagonal tile under the console in the second shot is not a permanent feature, btw!  It'll have a more convincing Time Column, rather than the clumsy-looking bit of acrylic tubing shown here, as well.

Also, ignore the early attempts at photo roundelling above.  Subsequently did a much better version of these which can be found on Tony Farrell's Original TARDIS Control Room Thread.

I wonder how this build is going, since it looks like the control detail is as nice as a 1:6 scale model! If it is active, good luck!

What this build? Well, it's err... err...
