Tower Hill Box - H12

Tower_Hill_Box-H12-pic1.jpg

From a 1969 episode of Randall & Hopkirk ("Just for the Record") --

Tower_Hill_Box-H12-pic2-1969-RandallAndHopkirk.jpg

You can't get anywhere near it on Street View due to huge changes in the area (Tower Hill is now a parking lot), but here is what it looked like in the 1940 Bartholomew's Atlas --

Tower_Hill_Box-H12-Map-1940_Bartholomews.JPG

And here is the current Google Satellite pic of the same area (closer in) --

Tower_Hill_Box-H12-CurrentGooMapSatView.JPG

Google Maps URL:  http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=tower+hill,+London&hl=en&ll=51.508706,-0.077977&spn=0.00093,0.001875&sll=51.508071,-0.076509&sspn=0.00093,0.001875&t=h&hnear=Tower+Hill,+London,+United+Kingdom&z=19

You can still see where Great Tower Street was.  Box site was just about direct center of this picture, along the fence bordering The Moat.

Here's a shot of this Box from circa 1955 (right of photo, just to the rear of the bus) --

Tower_Hill_Box-H12-c1955_lg.JPG

Not very good resolution, but shows more of Tower Hill to the left of the Box to give a bit more context for its position along the fence.

Another very long shot of the Tower, Tower Hill and the Box dated 21 August 1961 --

Tower_Hill_Box-H12-(21Aug1961).jpg
Center of fence section along Tower Hill in lower right of photo. Not a lot of detail, but useful is showing exactly where the Box was along the fence and in relation to other features.

A blowup of the Box and this side of Tower Hill --

The Box is at the center of the blowup.

Hi All,

Having a wonderful time back here in 1962 at the Tower...Unfortunately my Mobile Phone doesn't work and the battery is almost flat so unable to take any other photo's whilst here!
Too many yellow coaches here though!

Wish You were Here!

Pete

They're comin' to take me away ha ha...... ;DH12 Tower Hill (1960's Postcard).jpg

Interesting color on that.  Is anyone here a photographer?  Or printer?  It almost looks like a hand-colored black & white photo, but it could also just be the ink and printing process used in converting the photo to a postcard (or the effect of time on the picture or who knows what else).
"My dear Litefoot, I've got a lantern and a pair of waders, and possibly the most fearsome piece of hand artillery in all England. What could possibly go wrong?"

Hand coloured my great grandfather collected them and there are stacks of this sort of image in his colloection (no boxes though :( )

Another photo from petewilson, this time from 1960 --

Tower_Hill_Box-H12-(1960).jpg

All the way on the left.

A blowup --

For comparison, a blowup of the much earlier photo that started this Topic --

Finally, a good closeup of this Box.

Photo appears to be from the late 1960s --

It's amazing so few photos have come to light so far for this Box considering that literally hundreds of thousands of people must have passed right by it during its short lifetime.

What a lovely War-Time shot...
Well Done domwar (and I thought there weren't anymore photographs left to find!)  :D

hb88banzai

Yes, it is a great shot, but it's post war - 1948 as I recall, per the person who's father took the photo.

Maybe I should swing by one Friday (since I'm working in the area and finish early on Fridays) to take some shots from similar angles. (Might be a bit better than Street View) :)
In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

And, I do believe, this is a new one. Just to the right of the second bus :)

Got a few more long shots like this, some in colour, but nothing much to see. More things to scan.
