The TY-Js are the other way around, although there was a lot of chopping and changing, but generally I don't think the MK II had a box beneath the lamp. The main difference is the width of the lintel surrounding 'Police Public Call Box' and the font on the door sign. They are a bit of an mash up as the position of the lock and the number of handles changed regularly... not to mention the paint job!

I take your point regarding Peter Brachacki, but I thought I had actually spelt his name correctly in my earlier post.

I'm working on getting the last 3 boxes ready for the update next week: two more variations on the Brachacki box (Troughton and Pertwee) and the Hudolin box.

Wish me luck!!

And that's probably why I can never keep those "Marks" straight!

Well, you're right on all counts. I found these publicity photos of Colin Baker with the TARDIS, and during his tenure the Mark II was definitely in use:
ColinBaker(Publicity)01.jpg
First the Top Signs; definitely had that thicker bezel/frame around the "Police Box" signs. (Never cared for that look.)

And then there is this one:
ColinBaker(Publicity)02.jpg
Not the best, but it does show that there is no little box under the lamp. The Top Signs are the same as in the image above. And I just couldn't find a decent image of the Phone Panel sign. (I also tried to find an image of the TARDIS from "Revelation of the Daleks" when she's got that awful cone-shaped lamp on the roof, just to see if that one had a box under it, but that's one image which is proving to be very elusive - at least for me.)

Well, I wasn't aiming that part of my post at anyone, Ion (and I should have specified that, so sorry if it looked like I was taking aim at you; that wasn't the intent). But, I've been seeing his name spelled both ways in various posts, so I decided to look him up. (Having a last name that's constantly being misspelled sort of makes me want to get other peoples' names' spelling right.) Anyway, since I've been seeing both spellings of Mr. Brachacki's name in different posts I just wanted to know for myself if I was the one spelling it wrong. Then I saw that he had been credited in at least one production as "Peter Brachaki", but in many more as "Peter Brachacki", I was sort of relieved when I saw his birth name, because that settled the spelling dilemma, at least for me. And so since I did all that "finger work" typing away to learn the correct spelling of his name, I thought I would share my findings with everyone.

I can't wait to see how those turn out!

Well, if you insist... ;) ;D Good luck! (Though I doubt you'll need it; you're doing great already!)

Thanks Dino, much appreciated. It is hard to keep track of Mk 1 and 2 as there are always exceptions to the rule. For instance, on it's very first screen appearance in The Leisure Hive, the MK 1 box doesn't have a lamp base! But as it was a feature that did appear on the 80's boxes and I wanted more than just a different shade of paint, I thought I'd stick it on.

That last pic of Colin Baker sat on the bridge was from his first publicity shoot in full costume. The TARDIS as the back was probably the MK II, but it is hard to make out. The doors look horribly aligned though!

I have a shot of THAT scene from Revelation of the Daleks in 'Classic Who: The Harper Years' and it shows the TARDIS in construction with no lamp base.

Right... Back to digital painting!

You're quite welcome, Ion.

And now even more reasons for me not to be able to keep track of which is which! ;D (As if I needed more help with that - not being able to keep track, I mean.)

Well, I enlarged that image a little, and the Top Signs are the same (thick border/bezel/frame around the "Police Box" insert). So I'm guessing this is the MkII. As for the doors being horribly aligned, well, the Old Girl herself looks like she's leaning a bit to one side! That's enough to throw anyone's doors out of alignment. Just look at the larger image above with Baker in the TARDIS doorway and you can see that she's all out of alignment, literally from the roof down! (I've got the full image if you'd like me to post that; the one above is cropped to focus mainly on the style of the Police Box sign boxes.)

So even the cone lamp didn't get a base. At least now we know.

Good idea, and to borrow a quote to go with this...

All thanks to your brilliant researches, Tony. I spent 5 and a half hours after work yesterday altering it for the Pertwee model I'm doing ('72 Season 10). I had such fun figuring out the appropriate angle for the walls and removing quadrants! I used your overhead view as a guide so it should be fine.

tony farrell

Good luck with that, drawing an increasingly uneven trapezium in Paint was a beggar to do.

How about showing us views of each of the various boxes from different angles? Well, there's no harm in asking!  ;)

It's hard to find a good place to park in Skyrim, but I'll see what I can do.

Nice version of The Three Doctors Box!

ionsith

Thank you Tony. I was a little unsure how bright to go with the blue. In the Three Doctors it looks sky blue, but slightly more muted in Carnival of Monsters which was recorded before.

tony farrell

The recording order was Carnival of Monsters (last story to be recorded as part of season nine's recording block), Frontier in Space, The Three Doctors; immediately before The Three Doctors, the Police Box prop underwent repairs gaining the deeper right-hand side cross-rail which your render shows very nicely! (The left-hand lowest cross-rail was similarly strengthened but with a much smaller and neater repair.) The lighter blue paintwork you refer to was as a result of these repairs.

I like what you're doing with the various boxes :)

ionsith

Thank you, I really appreciate that. I still have the '96 Hudolin box to finish and then I will get a variety of better pictures and angles.
