After seeing the monster build diorama console, I headed over to TinkerCad to start a version of my favorite console.  The software built up the hexagon disk pretty easy.IMG_2686.JPG

Once the disk was designed, I cut it into six pieces and detailed each one.IMG_2677.JPGIMG_2678.JPGIMG_2679.JPGIMG_2680.JPGIMG_2681.JPGIMG_2682.JPG

I copied the insert sections to a new file to print them in clear or transluscent ABS.  The center was made bigger than normal 'cause I wanted it to hold a half liter water bottle as the core and make a bottle cozy at the same time.  The curves in the bottles make them look like the console center core anyway.IMG_2619.JPG

the center space was pretty big, so I made an adapter to allow a normal core cylinder to be attached.IMG_2684.JPG

It also needed a couple monitors and supportsIMG_2685.JPGIMG_2638.JPG

the console disk gets primed and painted silver to bring out details that need to be fixedIMG_2630.JPG

Hand painting is next for buttons and levers.

Wow!! :o :o It must have taken you ages to model all of that detail in TinkerCAD. I play around with the software quite a lot (although I never print anything off, due to a lack of a 3D printer :P). I can't wait to see this progress.

Kind regards, The14thDr :D

Will you be sharing the files here or on thingiverse when finished? I'd love to have a got at printing this myself as I've just got my first 3D printer!

When I get the small quirks worked out of the panels I will upload the files.  A lot of sealing had to be done before hand painting the controls.IMG_2651.JPGIMG_2652.JPGIMG_2653.JPG

A few panels got extra parts from some pocket watches for levers and gears, etc.IMG_2654.JPGIMG_2655.JPGIMG_2656.JPG

I found a small led toy to put in the bottom to add lights and a blue chem light for the coreIMG_2644.JPG

That's pretty fine detailing on something of this scale! Excellent work! She's beautiful (and since this version isn't on my list of favorites when it comes to consoles, that's saying something)! And I do like the customizing you've done to make this console your own.

Thanks, Dino!  the slicing program needs a few tweaks to close up some thin gaps that form during the printing.  the full water bottle looks good when lit from below with the LED toy underneath it.

Was this intended to be an exact replica, or a bit freestyle?

steve757

I started out with a freestyle core and replicated control panels, since  I had a curvy half liter water bottle of a certain diameter.  After printing it the center looked too big , so I made a stepped adapter to sit on top and a freestyle center tube to hold the light sticks.  It still fits the water bottle.

This is what it looks like with the water bottle.IMG_2692.JPG

Does anyone know how to upload regular files to the board?  I have a group of stl files for the console that are each about 400k, smaller than a picture.....can't find any reference on posting attachment files.  Thanks in advance.

Steve, you'll find most of what you need in here, http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=1282. There's a link for that at the top of the Main Page. Definitely look through that, but to save you some time right now - the only files allowed on the Forum are photos/images in JPG (or JPEG), GIF, or PNG formats, with file size limit of 500k for GIFs and PNGs. (Animated GIFs won't post because while they are "GIFs", the images inside them are converted to TIFF (or TIF) when they are animated, and the TIFF/TIF format isn't accepted by the Forum software.) Too many people had started posting too many animated GIFs a few years ago, and they were taking up valuable server space, not to mention not contributing anything to Builds, Diaries, etc., so the Admin at the time removed that ability.

So, sorry to say, but an STL file won't upload, and there is no way to post "attachments" as one would in an e-mail. What you can do, however, is what some people have done with large files and formats such as PDFs; they've gotten a Dropbox or other hosting site account (mostly free sites) and uploaded those kinds of files there, and then just posted the URL link so members could go directly to the file and download it if they wished.

If you want to post your image for people to check out before uploading it to something like Dropbox, you can always convert a copy of it to one of the accepted formats mentioned above and post that version - sort of like a preview.

I hope this answers your question, and provides some little helpful suggestions on how to get around the file format problem.

Thank you Dino!  I have  google cloud storage I hardly use that holds larger files and puts a link in for download........I guess you just have to have a free account or gmail address to access the link.  Once I get the files inserted there I can try the link to see if it can be posted in a comment to allow picking up the files that way.
