Resemblance of the Daleks

How do!

Over the last year or so I've been working on my own full sized New Series Dalek. I've always wanted one (Who wouldn't want a Dalek???) and after much umming and ahhing I decided to go with the 2005 variant. Its just my opinion but the look of the 2005 Dalek is one of the things Ed Thomas's team got absolutely spot on when they brought back the show (And its still just my opinion but they massively misfired when they redesigned the look for the "Fatleks" five years later...)

To be honest, given that the Daleks are so huge I'm surprised the Girlfriend let me get away with this build! (I guess that just means that I stand a chance of getting away with the Quark replica I'm planning next and if I get away with that I reckon I could push the boat out further with a replica of Kettlewell's robot  - You can't say I don't like to push my luck as far as I can... ;D)

The intention for this replica is that it will be fully operational (bar the blaster, obviously...) so I can get inside and have a trundle up to the shops if the mood takes me  ;D

A lot of these pictures I've posted elsewhere, but I thought you all might be interested as well...

You've got to start somewhere so I thought I'd start with the Gun. The actual guns are made from aluminium; however I had some acrylic rods of the same thickness lying around at home so I'm used them instead...

Theres some recesses on the front and rear of the dome which are a little too shallow. I'm hoping that with a little weathering they will start to look a little more prominent. But all in all its not turning out too bad...

I'd say it's turning out quite nicely - better even. For that "trundle", are you planning to fit this over a "Hoveround"-type motorized chair? And as for making the blaster work, is there a way you can make a mount inside the Dalek body for a can of compressed air (like you'd use for blowing dust out of keyboards and such) to slot and lock onto the blaster's breech? If you mounted the can upside-down, when you pressed the button it would shoot out a cloud of steam from the compressed gas inside. It should be enough to get you that desired effect at a low cost.

You've probably noticed this, but the modern Daleks have little black rims around their bumps

ugfvoiugugci_zpsa588b048.jpg

Its one of those interesting additional surface details that the modern Daleks have that are missing from the classic versions.

These rims are actually oil seals from a DAF truck (apparently). You can get replica's online cheap enough; however there are 56 of the things so costs can soon mount up, so I bought a couple and had a go at making my own...

I am so messy when I work... :o

The final results don't look too bad, when compared to the original

liugfuovuo_zps9e8fd791.jpg

jugiblg_zpsbb87838c.jpg

I've used vacuum-formed styrene sheets for the hemispheres. I originally wasn't going to go anywhere near vacuum domes as they are so fragile so I was thinking about using Acrylic domes, but after digging around online the cheapest I could get them for was £4.95 each, so for 56 of the things that works out way too expensive...

My next plan was to have a go at moulding my own from resin, and I made the moulds - but its so time consuming and it's more fiddly to get exactly right than I want so in the end I bit the bullet and tracked down a supplier that sells the vacuumed formed versions for about £35 for 20.

imagejpg2_zpsf6569cb3.jpg

Using the expanding foam to get over the fragility problem is bloody messy, but it does make the hemis much more solid, without increasing the weight at all. its such a simple solution I wish i'd tried it earlier..

I have to say making the Hemi's was one of the most laborious tasks I've ever done "for fun"  :-[

Thanks Dino.

I'm planning on motorising it. I've got a couple of motors and gears from a mobility scooter lying around which I intend to fit. The whole Dalek is intended to be demountable (so I can fit it through doorways etc. Daleks really are massive, to hide from one would be simple in reality - all you would need to do is walk through a standard width doorway! It seems Daleks are only good at invading Planets with wide open spaces...)

I like your compressed air idea. I was pondering fitting a small CO2 extinguisher but ruled it out as it would be cost prohibitive to replace. The Air cleaner is a much more affordable prospect!

I have to confess not all the body is my own work. About mid way through the project I stumbled upon a guy selling a partially completed skirt/shoulder section on ebay which saved me a couple of weeks worth of cutting up MDF. Once I completed the missing sections it looked like this...

And then on to painting

And this is the current state of play...

To be honest I really want to get things finished now as its taking a while to build. My problem is I have the attention span of a Gnat... I'm all right when it comes to building small replica's but I struggle to keep the momentum going with the bigger projects. I've had a K9 sitting around for a couple of years now that i'm still planning on making radio controlled, I just never seem to get around to starting it... :-[

Steve, if you're lacking motivation, we could always try some gentle hypnotherapy:

The Dalek's coming along beautifully, I wish I had your skill level. :)

Agreed!
That Dalek looks amazing!
I also agree that the Bronze beasts look 1000% better than the "Tellytubby" Daleks that came after.

BTW:  Your Metbox is still looking grand! Your build was one of the main ones that inspired me when I was a lurker prior to joining up & getting my backside into gear to build my own box.
Has it taken a lot of maintenance work to keep it looking good?

All the best,

Russell

Thanks Guys!

Tony: " Must Obey... I must Obey.."

Russell: Thanks mate. I have to admit it has taken a lot of looking after; however once you get the weather proofing licked (for a while at least) its not so bad. It's the problem with wooden builds though is that they do deteriorate over time. I keep saying this, but when mine gets to the inevitable point where I can't salvage it any more I will use the best parts to make moulds and make myself a fibreglass version...

Hopefully that will not be for quite some time yet though... ;)

russellsuthern

That's a great idea.

If mine was in a clearer space, once it reached the point of collapse, I'd love to fill it with explosives & film it going out with a massive BANG!!

(If your gonna go, go with a bang!)

Anyway, as you say, hopefully it'll be a few years before we need to think about these things!

Made a little more progress this weekend...

And then a bit of weathering to make it look a little more "metallic"

qrweuwder_zpsz83d0qza.jpg

oygufuitf_zpstmffjyzq.jpg

And then i can get everything fitted together properly

ugoiyguyf_zps4nba66wd.jpg

kugurdxytgv_zpspzqtxy0o.jpg

Things are looking a little more "Dalek" now...

I have a quandary now though. I was planning on motorising the Dalek, I have everything necessary for this all ready to go - Joysticks, speed controllers and motors and gearing assemblies (which I removed from my unfinished K9  :-[).

However I went to the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular last month and as you would expect from these events there were quite a few Daleks trundling around at one point in the show. I was struck by how agile a few of the more enthusiastic, and I guess experienced, operators were.

If I fit the motors to my Dalek it will be pretty cool (who has not wanted a motorised Dalek to wander around in?) However I will loose much of that agility...

Decisions, decisions...  ???

tony farrell

I retro-fitted a motability scooter to mine (hence it's an inch and 3/4 taller than it should be - but it will now scale kerb-stones (if approached 'head on')). Top speed is 12 miles an hour and I can out-run naughty school children!

Looking great Steve - I see the hypnotherapy worked!!

Been battling my way through refurbishing my house this week.
Spoiler
This was the state of my lounge before Friday/Yesterday...

Still got the dining room and hallway to go yet...

Whilst the plasterers were in I did manage to get a little more done on the Dalek.

I've now finished the shoulder slats, all that's left to do now is make the neck section
