There was no phone seen in the TARDIS until 1980 Logopolis. At that stage we see it in the refurbished Newbery TARDIS (1976-79).

There's also one seen in the Tom Yardley-Jones TARDIS in 1987, in Delta and the Bananamen, In this case it's not the TARDIS but is meant to be a police box in the 50's.

Well, at least now we have a reference image for the Classic Series Police Box phone: had a dial. Too bad we don't have a good image of the dial's center label for it as well. (Or does someone?)

CAVEAT: Remember, in "Logopolis" that phone was also supposed to have been the phone from a "real" Police Box like the one from "Delta and the Bananamen" (good one!); it was not a TARDIS phone when the policeman picked it up. It wasn't until after the Master materialized his TARDIS around that Police Box - and disguised his TARDIS as the Police Box to trap the Doctor - that this phone started being thought of as a "TARDIS" phone.

So on the whole this one could go both ways: one can just as correctly say that in the Classic Series, the Doctor's TARDIS proper never really had a phone (that is, we never saw the TARDIS' phone), as one could say that the TARDIS' phone was only seen in "Logopolis" (which would make the TARDIS prop used with the phone - technically - a 'Yardley-Jones' as even though the phone is in the 'Newbery', the Newbery had been refurbed to appear as though it was a Yardley-Jones clone).

I guess it just depends on what level of accuracy you're aiming for.

The Newberry box just had TYJ doors hung on it. But looking at that grab from Logopolis I'm not sure it had happened yet.

The side walls look like they have the same height panels.

Not during William Hartnell's tenure as far as we know.  The panel did not initially open.

For Patrick Troughton's "The Invasion" (Cybermen/UNIT story) - the original prop was refitted with an opening telephone panel - complete with a pull handle.   Up to this point the original Brachaski (sp?) box had not had a telephone installed as far as we know.

Unfortunately the original video of the episode that would have seen this feature used is lost, and it is not certain whether they did use it (I don't think the animation did anything with it).  I expect the idea was a member of public was going to mistake the TARDIS for a real police box as and end-gag to the story.

I am sure someone on this forum knows the proper details - but there is photographic evidence.

I think this change was quickly reversed as I expect it stopped both doors opening fully, and made the interior even more claustrophobic.

You can see the compartment during the location filming for the Invasion here...

Tony Farrell's extensive research confirmed that the phone compartment was actually installed when the prop was on loan to the Out of the Unknown team for a dream sequence in an episode of that series, so technically the box was never fitted for the phone compartment for Dr Who itself.

The compartment was removed either during the refurb that took place midway through the recording of the Seeds of Death, when the prop received its black phone sign, or the refurb that took place prior to the recording of The Terror of the Autons (as that is when you next see the prop with the right hand (as you face it) door open...)

I wonder if the TARDIS prop was used for a different program that specific year where a opening door and phone may have been needed. (Perhaps used as a genuine police box for a detective program or some such)
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

I believe I have heard/ read that it was.... I cannot for the life of me remember what program it was borrowed for, though.

I think I recall Dockson of Dickgreen being mentioned. Oh sorry, that should be Dickson of Dockgreen!

( If I am not careful, the Daleks might blow me to Comedomking!)

As @fivefingeredstyre mentioned, it was a dream sequence in Out of the Unknown. The same episode also featured Daleks.

Thanks for the reminder!

Out of the Unknown

Unfortunately it seems unlikely we'll ever see this cameo appearance.
