Interesting.  McGann and McCoy are about the same height, IIRC.  At first I was just going to say the height difference in those photos is because McCoy is on the ground and McGann is in the box.  But the very next shot has McGann clearly in the box--and a good 4" shorter than he is in the other photos.  He doesn't appear to be hunching or slouching, so I'm thinking they put him on a box for the handoff of the key.

I think they've both shrunk over the years but at the time McGann was always credited as being 5'10" and McCoy around 5'6"?

DoctorWho8

Sylvester and Paul have stated on convention gigs that they wanted Paul to look taller than Sylvester, so they had Paul stand on a box as a result.

Bill is correct, I think it was something to do with putting the new star more in the frame and making the outgoing Doctor look less robust, and whilst McCoy is actually 5'6, McGann stands at an averageish 5'8 so he would have had an advantage anyway. His thin frame and fitted coat are what make him look closer to 5'10, I think.
Isn't it how ironic that we have to think of solutions out of the box, in order to build our boxes a lot of the time?

fivefingeredstyre

Not doubting you, but didn't McGann give his height as being 5'10'' on one of the "making of's" at the end of a Big Finish release?

superrichi1a

I think some Hollywood height speak is going on there! It's like Ewan McGregor saying he's 6 feet (5'10) or Tom Cruise saying he's 5'9 (5'7), indestructible standard seems to be to add two inches.
I met McGann a while back and can confirm he's about 5'8, I'm 5'10.5 and he was at least a couple of inches below me :) Likewise Colin Baker was a couple of inches above, which surprised me!

So... are you really 5'10.5, or are you Hollywoodising...  ;D

superrichi1a

Haha I'm really 5'10.5, and it's bothered me for a long time as I always wanted to be 6'3 (Superman's height) as I was a very tall child and have tall friends who call me short a lot!
Well... Ok, I'm 5'11 when I wake up and I have boots I use for cosplay sometimes that make me 6'3.5, let's leave it there :D
In case anyone is interested about the Doctors' real heights for extrapolation and what-not, it's something like this:

Hartnell: 5'8
Troughton: 5'7
Pertwee: 6'3
Baker: 6'3.5
Davison: 6'
Baker: 6'
McCoy: 5'5.5
McGann: 5'8
Hurt: 5'7
Eccleston: 6'
Tennant: 6'1 (maybe lower after his back incident)
Smith: 5'11.5
Capaldi: 6'

So a good mix there! Personally I'd quite like a relatively burly Doctor one day, the "tall and thin" idea is too overused. Someone of Tom Hardy's sort of shape would be good (5'9 and 195lbs). But hey, I'm on a tangent, I'll stop there :p

Agreed! And while I would love to see Capaldi stay long enough to break Tom Baker's record for holding the part, when Capaldi leaves, I think someone like Martin Freeman would be great for the 13th Doctor - a departure from the "long shank of a man" (that Irongron mentioned), but one that could definitely take on the role and make it work!

Ah, I see we have a new thread, excellent! I guess this means we could usefully build a database of actors' heights for use in working out rough measurements for props from right across the whole show! I have a few more to offer which may be of use - they differ a bit from what Google will tell you, but Google is frequently wrong and Ive been interested in the past on working out heights for this reason, so these should be pretty accurate:

Karen Gillan: 5'9.5-5'10
John Barrowman: 5'11.5-6'
Richard E. Grant: 6'2
Tommy Knight: 5'7
Samuel Anderson: 5'10.5-5'11 (I got a chance to meet him recently as we're both from the same place, I was working as Batman at an event so couldn't accurately read his height, but I think he was very close to me, perhaps fractionally more, but don't quote me here!)

John Barrowman: 5'11.5-6'

Again, are they hollywood ising these heights? I met John Barrowman when he was in the height of Torchwood fame and he was just a tad shorter than I am! And I believe I'm 5'8

Haha well height exaggeration is annoyingly common, but u think it's safe to say Barrowman is 6'. His agency list him as that and he never looks very much shorter than 6'1 Tennant or Stephen Amell.

The issue, I think, is that heights are extremely hard to judge, and this comes into trying to judge prop sizes too. The size of their shoe heel, size of their hair, posture, how slim they are etc will always change how you look at it. In real life you don't notice the difference between a 5'10 and a 6' person unless looking for it etc. In the case of Barrowman, it's totally possible that if he were wearing flat shoes, had his hair down and had a leaning posture (you cant really tell just by looking) he could appear far shorter than he is normally.

People -- let's keep this to reference information.  We don't discuss casting, etc.
