Whilst working on another "Police Box" project I came across this Photo from 1947 of X63..
Not very good but better than nothing I guess!

Nice find!

Actually, I've got a better one, just have to scan it.  ;D

Been waiting to post until then, but seeing how scanning seems to always take a back burner with me, here's a lower res version of the postcard (circa late 1950s) --

Shame I can't find a pic of the Box it replaced, as it may have been one of 10 pre-Richmond prototypes (like Becontree, Dagenham, and Coulsdon), itself replacing an older Mark 0, Cricklewood type Box. It was 180 yards or so north, just the other side of the railway bridge and across the border into Yiewsley where Station Road changes names - the southwest corner of the junction of High Street and Tavistock Road (across the High Street from West Drayton Station).

Way to motivate Pete - I really have to get to my backlog.

Superb find Pete. And what lovely additional images Banzai.

Backlog? You have a backlog?

Blimey! I come across an image and I rush to the boards to share LOL! (I've heard a whisper that theres some new files at the Met, so I'll be going in to have a look next month)

Mark

Yes, a really looooonnnnng backlog  :( --

...Face palm.

Dalekoracle - On your trip to the Archives, keep your eyes peeled for any mention of the prototypes or mods to older boxes, if you could. Might even be some more photos of things that look like the 'original' Coulsdon Box (or even more arcane like the Becontree Boxes) in there somewhere.

Here's a list of the probable prototypes (three of them definitely known to have been) from a March 1932 list --

K Division:
Goresbrook Road, Becontree -- (actually Dagenham - Definite prototype (erected Dec 1928), replaced by K10 (08-Oct-1934) and moved to other side of Goresbrook Road)

Wood Lane, Becontree -- (Definite prototype (erected Dec 1928), replaced by K7 (08-Oct-1934) at same location)

P Division:
West Wickham Village -- (replaced by P26 (02-Jul-1934))

S Division:
Great Stanmore, Stanmore Road -- (replaced earlier type 'Fixed Point' Police Telephone Box (itself erected 1927) at other end of Stanmore Broadway, replaced by S7 (13-Jan-1936) and moved to east end of the Broadway at unknown date)

Kingsbury Green -- (replaced by S15 (13-Jan-1936) and moved a hundred yards or so east on other side of road)

T Division:
Forecourt of Isleworth Police Station (closed) -- (replaced by T39 (13-Jan-1936))

X Division:
Kenton Lane -- (replaced by X24 (04-May-1936))

Tavistock Road, Yiewsley -- (replacing older type 'Fixed Point' Police Telephone Box (itself erected 1912-1924), and then nominally replaced by X63 (04-May-1936) about 180 yards to the south (the Box in this Topic))

Z Division:
Forecourt of Knights Hill Police Station -- (Not directly replaced by a Met Box, nearest being Z42 (03-Apr-1933) sited nearly 500 yards to the north)

Smitham (Coulsdon), Brighton Road -- (Definite prototype erected June 1929, replacing older type 'Fixed Point' Police Telephone Box (itself erected between 1912 and 1924, and moved twice by 1929), replaced by Mark 2 Metbox Z9 (02-Jan-1933))

Ten in all, just like the old rumors, and quite apart from the Mark 1's of Richmond, Wood Green, and Wimbledon. In fact, in that 1932 list they were marked separately from either the Met Box installations completed by that time or the converted "Fixed Point" Boxes.

Note also that a full seven of them were brand new installations, with no prior Cricklewood type "Fixed Point Box" being listed in the Property Schedules (including the 1924 list, which shows amendments through around 1930 or so). Two of the known Prototypes were in such new installations, and one was a replacement for a Mark 0, so the case that these were all prototypes is pretty compelling.

Again, many thanks to Mike Knight (plumbly7) for the heads up on these.
