And that is the perfect way to handle a "Stitch Nazi" (or so we called them in the Living History community). You do what you like, not what other people like (unless you like it as well); but certainly not just because it's what someone else wants you to do!

Actually, don't get me wrong, I have absolute respect for those guys with the skills & patience to create absolutely perfect replicas. I tip my hat to them.
But it does annoy me when they then are disrespectful to other work that doesn't match up to their own high standards. (Of course I know most of the guys are NOT like this. It's always the vocal minority who give everyone else a bad name.)
But what's even worse is the "armchair athletes" who slag off other peoples work when they have built nothing of note themselves!!
I remember getting some security work for a Sci Fi show in Worthing a few years back. (One of the main guys running it was a chap called Alex, who runs a shop called "Type 40 Toys" in Worthing. Definitely worth a look if you are in the area.)
I offered to work dressed in my Tom Baker costume. So, I got to spend a whole weekend wandering around a Sci Fi convention dressed as Dr Who & got paid for it! (Not bad, eh?)
Anyway, it was a great show, they had about 12 full sized Daleks, a full sized 1st Doctor console & room, & a beautiful fibreglass TARDIS of the metbox style. Unfortunately, this was before I got heavily in to the prop building, so I didn't find out who made them all, & my photos have been long since wiped by a virus...
I remember the guy setting up the TARDIS saying the lamp was an original nautical fresnel lamp & was probably worth more than the rest of the TARDIS put together!
I was a bit sceptical at the time, but now I know a bit more, he may have not been so far off...
Anyway, to cut a long story short, (Please! I hear you say!) There was a chap inside his own amazing Dalek build, manfully trundling around outside the show, entertaining the kids by spraying them with a water pistol he'd attached to his Dalek's gun.
This guy sidles up to me & says, "Yes, that's a very good Dalek he's built, very accurate. But, of course, he has got one part a bit wrong..."
Before he could enlighten me, I interrupted by saying, "Well, why don't YOU build a Dalek that's 100% accurate, then you can bring it to the show next year & show us all how it's done!"
He gave me quite an annoyed look before scuttling off back to wherever he'd come from!

This is one of the reasons I like this site. Everybody is very respectful, complimentary & positive about all the builds showcased here.

Hi, all!

Just thought I'd update you with how things are going with my new baby

Firstly, I have had a couple of weather related issues.
1) My supposed "exterior filler" goes soft like porridge everytime it rains. You can actually squidge it with your finger under the paint. However, it hasn't actually broken the paint seal &, when it dries it goes hard again, so I'm not going to panic & scrape it all out again, but wait & see how it holds up over the winter.

2) Despite all my waterproofing efforts, I got a massive leak, right in the centre of my roof, coming through the hole where my light goes! I spent ages trying to find the source of the leak & eventually discovered all my bitumen & paint layers had risen up slightly in one of the rear corners, so the water was able to get in there, travel along the inside of the roof & come out the central hole! I'm quite amazed this has happened, but a ton more sealent & paint in that corner has hopefully solved the issue. With hindsight, I'm actually glad there was a hole in the roof for the light, (& a grill in the floor!) or else the water wouldn't have had anywhere to escape from & would have just kept filling up, maybe bringing my whole roof down!
I was reading GeminiTimeLords build diary recently & he seemed to have similar problems. I laughed out loud (In sympathetic agreement) at his heartfelt statement, along the lines of, "Just what the hell do you have to do to waterproof these bloody things?!"

There is a graffiti wall at the front of the Youth Centre & somebody kindly referenced my TARDIS, which I thought was nice...


Finally, I decided my phone cubby hole was looking boring, & needed some tarting up. I was originally going to put one of those Gallifrey shipyard plaques on the back of the door, but somehow it just didn't seem right, so I eventually came up with...





They are not in any way authentic, but I just wanted something that would have the flavour of the type of signs that might be found in a Police Box cubby hole.

great Hudolin box, I completely understand the weather issue, one of the reasons my box was dismantled and under going a rebuild, and  referb , I am not saying do that, but she looks fab.
What lens did you use for the top of her? I did find this one of the hardest to find.
also where did you  your paint from, sorry about the questions but inquiring minds what to know.

Thanks for your kind words.
I think your lamp looks amazing.
Believe it or not, mine is a pickled Gherkin jar from the pound shop! (Cheapest lamp ever...?!)
There is a section in my build diary describing how I whacked it together with some ply, some bits of carpet sweeper rods for the uprights & the lid of a cookie jar for the top! (Needs must, & all that...

I was really pleased with the shade of paint I ended up with. I wanted something dark, a bit like the original boxes, so I just asked for the darkest blue they had. He gave me:

Trugard Smooth Masonry Paint
Natural Colour System 2nd Edition (NCS)
Code: S 7020 R80B.

Don't know what half of that means, but I hope it helps!!

In return, I have a couple of questions for you:
What style of Karate do you practice?
How long have you been training & where did you learn?
(Off topic, I know, but Martial Arts is my other passion!)

Are you kidding? There are oodles of angles from which one can photograph a TARDIS to make one pic different than another: not to mention adding some sort of backdrop (or Photoshopping) to change the landscape around the Old Girl! Just let your mind loose and you'll be surprised at what you could think up. (And then there are the "night shots" that can double the possibilities!)

Again, I ask: are you kidding? Of course we like it! (We do love photos!) Everyone's build is special, and we can never get enough photos of those great builds to ogle. And come to think of it, I don't think there's ever been a photo of someone's TARDIS that we didn't like!
