Hey Tom,
You may have already said at some point and I missed it but, what software are you using to model and render?
This looks like a very fun project! :)

I use SketchUp to make the models and Kerkythea to render, although my current computer will crash if I render all the lighting and the model itself, which is why I'm hopefully getting a better computer at Christmas 2015.

If you want me to, I can try to setup some basic materials in Blender and render it out for you. Just send me an exported version of the file (I can give you a list of formats Blender supports) and I'll render it out for you.

Thank you so much vortexmaker. Would a .3ds file work?

That should work perfectly.

Is there any special lighting you want? And would you rather have me send the result to you so you can post it as an update, or should I just post it as a comment?

the_prop_maniac

Um, the only things that need to be lit are the central column (the circles and then the diamond on top) and the roof (there is an image of the Andromeda system there, if you can light that up to shine through the glass roof.

I would rather have you send me the result, if you could.

OK, I shouldn't be a problem sending it directly to you. Make sure to send me any textures you want used also.

the_prop_maniac

Sure. Should I email the file or another way?

Send me a PM with a link to the file on dropbox or google drive or some other file hosting system. It doesn't matter much to me. I would tell you to email me, but I'm a bit wary of giving out my email on the internet.

Vortex maker, you could PM your e-mail address to Tom. No one but you and him would see it.

Hey guys. I know its been a long time but recently there's been a big adjustment period in my life and you know. I just need a small nudge to a thread about a misc panel (door control, light control). If anyone could send me a hyperlink, or a picture of what normally goes on that panel.

Many thanks,
Tom

Well, there is always this reference for the Door Control: http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=2104.0 (Panel 2, Control 2). And for the light switch, same page, Panel 3, Control 4. For great color drawings of those panels and controls definitely see Tony's research here: http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=5884.msg70327#msg70327.

Once the Hartnell/Troughton eras ended, those controls and their functions changed, and with the console revamping in the late Pertwee era, and then the console's complete makeover in Season 15, things really changed. From about Season 15 until the "Five Doctors" console came along, the door control was that tall stick lever with the large red ball knob on it:
Season15DoorLever.jpg
(Door Lever with large red ball: towards the edge of the console was "Open", pushed forward was "Close" - someone let me know if I've got that backwards, but I remember a frustrated Master in "Time Flight" slamming the lever down (towards the console's edge) to open the doors when he couldn't get the TARDIS to take off.) Also with this console, starting in the Pertwee era, there was never any control used to operate the TARDIS' interior lighting. (It's all automatic, as mentioned in the reference link above.)

From "The Five Doctors" on the Door Lever changed to this curved lever with a flat rectangular "pull knob" on it:
5DoctorsDoorLever.jpg
Basically, when you lifted that "pull tab", a 90-degree curved "shaft" curled out of the console and opened the doors; pushing it back in closed them. Again with this console there was never any control used for the lighting.

I don't remember any door control or lighting switch being shown in the 1996 Series Revival Pilot Movie. And with the dawn of the New Series, there is no Door Control lever on the console that I can remember; it's all just twist the knobbie on the back of the lock (or snap your fingers if you're clever enough) to open and close the doors.

Of course with your console being of your own design, those controls can look like anything you wish. So don't feel limited; let your imagination run with the idea (though I admit having some references to look over isn't a bad thing. :))

I hope this was helpful.

It was helpful in a sense, but if you had the whole picture of that panel, especially from the early three Doctors Console's (Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee)

Well, the first link in my previous post takes you to the Hartnell/Troughton console layout panel by panel (from an article in an early Doctor Who Monthly, which became Doctor Who Magazine). The second link takes you to Tony Farrell's above-excellent drawings of that console, panel by panel (in color). Hartnell and Troughton used the same console, with the same controls, and oddly enough both actors used the same controls for the same functions.

For the Pertwee era, those two panels mentioned with those controls on them (Panel 2 control 2 for the door, and Panel 3 control 4 for the lights) had changed dramatically. If you check out the panel layouts here: http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=1098.0 and then compare that to the best image of those two panels...
PertweeEra.jpg
(Panel 2, red arrow; Panel 3, yellow arrow - from "The Time Monster")
...you'll notice that on Panel 2, where the old Door Lever was, there is now a large hole (for a time tracker, and later a pull-up insertion tube for the Dematerialization Circuit). I know this image is showing the console as the Master's, but it is the same prop with a different time rotor; everything else about it is the same. And Panel 3 no longer has that control for the lights, but is full of new controls. Pertwee also never seemed to use the same control for the same function twice; he would flip one switch to open the doors in one story/scene, and in another he would use a completely different control for the doors.

And if you check out the console after it was refurbed for Season 13 (Tom Baker's second year in the role - the console was not seen at all in Season 12): http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=1101.0 you'll see that all bets are off from here on out because Tom Baker was even worse when it came to using different controls for different functions, and almost never used the same control for the doors. Even here, http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=1105.0 the Season 15-20 console didn't start out with that red-ball Door Lever; it appeared later in the Tom Baker era. Even then Tom Baker often used a different control for operating the doors; in his last story, "Logopolis", the door control was a green, squarish tube with rounded corners and a grey cylindrical tube in its center...
LogopolisDoorControl.jpg
(Image courtesy of seanclarke1, showing Adric opening the doors.)
That red-ball lever only seemed to become the de facto door control when Peter Davison took over the role.

So for the Hartnell/Troughton console panels, those first two links in my previous post are the best references there are. The first link in this post, and that screen grab (courtesy of Watcher) are the best I can find for the Pertwee era, and you can see just how much that console had changed. (For Pertwee's first year he used the same console as Hartnell and Troughton, but by then the Door Lever on Panel 2 had been knocked off - it was already missing by "Ambassadors of Death"...
MissingLever.jpg
(Yellow arrow is pointing to that panel, and the lever should be on the panel almost right where the arrow is pointing.)
...and Panel 3 is much the same as it was, only it looks like that control has changed a little (to a larger knob?):
Panel3-LightControl.jpg
(Yellow arrow is pointing to that panel - what we can see of it - and to that "lights" control.)
Note: Both of these images are courtesy of warmcanofcoke.

Unfortunately in Pertwee's first year - when it was still at least 85% still the Hartnell/Troughton console - we didn't get to see much of the console, and even then it was outside of the TARDIS, so we never knew what control he might have used for the doors before the console's first big refurb. At the end of his first year, one of the panels had been completely replaced. So references for the "Pertwee, year 1 pre-refurb" are slim.

I hope this helps a little more.

Alright, I've done the Misc Panel (or Panel One, or whatever). Again, my apologies for taking so much undue time away from this project. I shall be moving on to the Second Panel now, but a render will follow suit later in the day, so don't forget to check back in a couple of hours.
