I'm putting this in the build diaries section because even though it's only 3" square, it's a full sized TARDIS correct me if I'm wrong! (Incidentally, now all those half size and desktop models are actually accurate props thanks to the latest episode! )
you can buy an officially licensed one here:  http://www.rubbertoereplicas.com/#!tardis-seige-mode/c70e but if you want to make your own, you can print it out and make one with paper, there is currently a full sized image file here:  http://static.wixstatic.com/media/be0900_7e46cbaf552b43cb99890022d47466b5.jpg but if you want to print that out and your printer can only handle 8.5x11" paper, you can edit it onto 2 sheets, if you have the software and skills, and  do so. I was going to, when someone on this group https://www.facebook.com/groups/theTARDISownersclub/ mentioned colour, and I thought, I can do that...
 so I am working on using photoshop airbrush to copy the look of the prop so people can print it out in colour and make their own, using foam core or cardboard, or whatever they like, to make their own.  You will need a colour printer, but other than that, you could even just print it on cardstock or paper and tape it together if you wanted.
as you can see I am not only using a photo reference, I am digitally sampling colours from that image and painting with them. each side will be individually coloured with highlights and shadows to match the lines. I am probably going to stay up late working on this because ADD.

This is fantastic work. I had to sign up so I could encourage you to finish. I'd like to use it to print off stickers and apply it to a Rubik's cube.   

I agree; this is fantastic work! I look forward to the finished results because I would love to print this out and glue it to a block of wood. (Would make a magnificent paperweight, and also look wonderful sitting on the coffee table!)

Looking at it, the raised corner pieces wouldn't be hard to model in blender. If you did that then made a .pdo out of it for pepakura, the details of the corners could be part of the paper model.

A friend of mine with experience in computer modeling whipped this up; I am running into some issues converting it into a papercraft file. I'm going to keep tweaking it until I get it right. Mobius, I think we can take your texture and apply it to a Pepakura file so that the pattern conforms to the 3-D parts of the model. I'll keep working at it until its right.

Its been awhile and I just thought to check on this. Do you have a finished version? Or would you be willing to share the file as is, because it looks great.

For less that a dollar (US) you can take a JPG or PNG to a place like Office Depot and have this printed out, in color, on a piece of 11 x 17 paper so you can keep it in one piece. And since the printing would be done on a color laser printer the image would never run or smear if a water drop got on it. (If they made 11 x 14 paper you could use that as well, but I've never seen any in that size, but the 11 x 17 is a common, standard size and would fit this image with room to spare.)

And like bluuit I'm kind of curious about this one as well. Any luck with it, Mobius? Or has that miserable thing called "Life" interfered too much? (And I, for one, know just how badly life can interfere with the best of plans!)

was about to update my largest build thread, I forgot about this one, remembered about a month ago, then forgot again. still on my to-do list. yes life has been getting in the way a bit. I will finish it!

ah, found the file, actually working on it again now. hoorah.

as you can see I am actually working on this again! got one square about done. and figured out some shortcuts for making highlights more quickly by copying some of the linework, inverting it so it's white lines, sampling just the bits of that I want, and pasting them under the lines and offset slightly so they look like highlights along the edges of ridges, have to do a little more than that, some tweaking, blurring, etc. but its faster and looks better than painstakingly hand airbrushing highlights along arcs, and trying to get them smooth, with my wacom tablet, as I had been doing. should be able to finish it quite soon.

OH YES! This is going to be so very cool when it's done! Thank you for all the hard work you're putting into this one, mobius!

ok, so it's a point where I think it looks pretty good. might even call it done. I flattened the image layers in photoshop and saved it as a tiff format file, which is 53.8MB, and as a Jpeg at 8.48 MB (also a version with just the colour, so you can see what it looks like without the lines, it looks better with the lines as they cover some rough transitions.) speaking of those, I looked over the black and white linework very carefully as there were a few places where lines ended a little more abruptly than they ought to have done, or crossed over a line, instead of disappearing into it, so I smoothed all of those transitions out, a couple of dozen, roughly. anal-retentive I know, they were hard to see unless you zoomed way in, but I couldn't stop myself correcting them.
  I took a screen shot of an example which I will post presently, now the question is, where ought I post this thing, I think it's too large to upload here or is it? been so long, I forget. ah, max 500K it says below, way too big. open to suggestions.

shrunk it down to 25% just so I could post a version of it here, anyway. oh bugger, it's still 943k at that size. sigh. let me shrink it some more. hang on. crikey, I had to shrink it down to 18% to get it below 500k. resolution is going to be terrible obviously, at that size. you can make dice out of this one.
also had to crop it a bit, when I tried typing a note on it about how much smaller it was than the original, that increased the file size to over 500k, that seems quite unfair.  so I undid that.

Mobius, according to max. size for pictures, that 500k limit is only for PNGs and GIFs. So if you post your image as a JPG (JPEG) it should post - it may take a minute or so, making it look like the Forum has frozen, but it should post.

If that doesn't work, you could always post it to your Deviant Art account so we can download the full size from there once you give us the link. The only other option is to use Dropbox.
