Rani Console?

It's time I did a plan of this one. Would we all agree the hemispheres are most likely 10 cm / 4 inches in diameter? I also need to make the original wardrobe exterior plans available again.

The mechanics for this one are simpler then having a colum to raise and lower.  I built the rings on my console and at one point in history I had the central colum like the Rani's as well.  Not alot of weight involved, thats what makes it easier.  I did have a hard time trying to find a way to make the rings.  Im sure someone with metal working experience can easily put them together.  Even the ones I have now are not quite angled correctly and it throws the illusion off.  They need to be smooth and welded in such a way that the weld does not attract your attention as they move.  Thats the complaint I have with mine.  If anyone needs advice on it let me know... at least you wont have to make all the mistakes I did.

rmef2 the center part of the Rani's console did raise and lower.   The middle part inside the spinning rings.

Third time is the charm I hope.  Would not let me post a reply.  You are correct, the middle does raise and lower.  However, it is much lighter than say Baker's colom and therefore easier to achieve.  I made mine work with a simple rotisary motor that raised and lowered the middle rings.

Here is what I don't know how to do... How do you make such a nice round pannel shape?  As you can tell by my console, I was trying to go round but in the end settled for a decagon.

In that close-up photo of the Doctor looking under the console I'd say those hemis around the edge are at least 4 inches. I would almost go as far as saying, with the budget available, and the fact that the plans say on them "Only Once", that they borrowed Dalek hemis for this, or used the existing Dalek hemi moulds to make them. So maybe they are the same size as what's on the Dalek skirts?

Dino.

Edit, 19th March 2012, US Eastern time: I just read Wayne's update on his Dalek build and the load of polystyrene balls he got on the cheap. If those hemis on this console are the same size - or darned close enough - as those on a Classic Dalek, those poly balls might be the way to go for anyone building (or contemplating a build for) this console.

I seriously want to make this!  Any ideas on how to make the round shape?  Everything I work out in my head is drastically too complicated.  The rings are no problem... did them before.

Any math folks out there; how do I figure how to cut the top panel with a slope so it fits together nice?  Right now I'm thinking of shaping press board around a frame... or perhaps cardboard reinforced with fiber glass.  Never worked with fiber glass.

Love this console!

Just throwing out some ideas here, but if it were me I would be thinking of doing some wedge shaped supports on a round table top and then constructing the cone out of light material.  Either plastic or cardboard of hard board and making it in an arc, sort of like the cones the vet will put on a dog to keep it from licking at stitches.  A small scale mock up out of card might really help solidify the design.  Add some Hemispheres and some controls- Throw an old record player in the centre to turn your rings and Dino's your uncle... what could possible go wrong... the best Christmas the orphans have ever had....

just a thought for what it is worth

Cheers

Ha-ha! I see what you did there, M.D.! ;D ;D ;D (Thanks for the plug, though I didn't think I warranted one. :))

Your build plan sounds like a good one and should work out well for rmef2's build.

Good luck with it rmef2. Keep us posted on this one!

I'll have the rest of the plans ready soon, but here are the basic dims to get things started. This is definitely a metric prop. The measurements are all in centimeters, but this one converts to inches very cleanly if you don't mind it being the very slightest bit larger (1 inch = 2.5 cm instead of the actual 2.54 cm).

Thinking that those hemis might be Dalek parts threw things off right away. They are larger at (probably) 12.5 cm. There are 30 in total set at 12 degrees apart.

The whole thing has surprisingly simple dims that were easy for photogrammetry so I'm confident these are spot on unless I made errors. The largest diameter of a meter and a half probably gets padded out a little by the belt, but I didn't draw it as such. The top diameter of the panel/cone section is not labeled, but it is smaller than the collar (probably 65 cm).

It's such a lovely prop and a shame we never saw it again. I'm itching to build a console. Having ditched the idea of a custom one in favor of a replica, this could be the one.

Their are three mechanism's that run the column. The gyroscope, the column & the hoops. Theirs a slow moving motor that turns the gyroscope siting on a panel that is pushed up & down by a rotating piston. As for the hoops. There connected to a heavy glass or acrylic ring, turned by three baseball pitching wheels under the three black boxes.

Use foam fiberglass resin. Make a mold then make out sections of the console. The center is probably wood 2x4's like a wood water barrel.

I think only 2 vacuum formed or molded pieces are required. The indents and disc controls are the same apart from how they're trimmed (2 tiers for the controls, 3 tiers for the indents). Then, of course, there are the hemis.

The rest is purely sheet construction and the rotor parts.
