HI

Anyone know the colour scheme of the Quark?

The only colour picture I can find is this little old one

Thanks

I'm sure I've seen another photo of one at the blackpool exhibition back in the 70's-might be on Mick Halls website? But it seemed to have much the same silver livery. Not sure if that's their original colour scheme though.

Well, I couldn't find anything in the way of a color key in The Doctor Who Technical Manual (pub. 1983, and yes; I still have my original copy and I think there are still a few available from Amazon), And I couldn't find any color images in my stash, but I did find these that might help a little.

Quarks-01.jpg
A bit dark, but it shows the quarks out in the daylight;

Quarks-02.jpg
more quarks, and a little closer than above: not as clear of an image, but it shows some color differences;

Quarks-03.jpg
overhead shot of some quarks: a little brighter and crisper of an image with their two weapons arms folded out;

Quarks-04.jpg
and yet more quarks: another crisp image which shows the quarks may have been grey, with brighter bits;

Quarks-Weapons-01.jpg
a quark showing the business end of its weapons arms: note the chrome-looking "gun barrels";

QuarkHead(big).jpg
and finally the "eye opener". The quark does seem to have a monochrome grey body overall, even the "accordion knees" on its legs. As seen in some of the previous images, those pointy things protruding from its head look like they were made from translucent/frosted perspex (and not symmetrical as shown in the Technical Manual; you can see in the images here that the ones on the sides are taller "diamond" shaped, and the one atop its head is longer front to back). The ring where its neck joins the body looks like plain silver; the varying diameter and length tubes sticking out of the top half of its head (in quadrants) look very much chrome, as do the gun barrels in its weapons arms, and its "claws" in its retractable arms (below the weapons arms).

The lower half of its head (those quadrants in line with the top half) look like they're plain silver like the neck ring, as they are lighter than the rest of its body, but lack that sparkle or luster of the claws, gun barrels, and those tubular things on the top half of its head.

And that's about all I can dissect of these cutesie-yet-deadly foes from these images. I'm sure others will find some details that I've missed, and by all means speak out and let us know what you see. So to quickly summarize:

-monochrome grey bodies;
-frosted/translucent perspex "points" around (and on top) of their heads;
-chrome for the tubular things in its head's top half quadrants, claws, and weapons gun barrels;
-silver (not bright like chrome) for its neck ring and quadrants on its head's lower half.

I hope this - and the images - helps.

Thanks Dino. You've pretty much confirmed what I thought.

I've taken the old Technical Manual plans and and i'm bending them around till they more accurately reflect what we saw on screen, and using the rough scale that was included in the manual to make a full set of plans so I can build a full sized replica when I've finished my Dalek...

I've noticed a few revelations along the way. Stuff like the "hands" appearing to be detachable and interchangeable, the gun barrel detailing changing from Quark to Quark and that the rear detailing on most Quarks appears to match the front so that it looks like its supposed to have dummy arms at the rear as well. I'm pretty sure I spotted one Quark whose back was plain, mind...).

Those lower quadrants on the head look semi-transparent to me. The reflection on them and the changes in light pattern makes them look like slightly frosted perspex. It could be that this was to help the operator to see/ make them more comfortable?

You can also see the bulbs hidden within the base of the diamond shapes on the head.

There's a colour pic of Pat with his "The War Games" 'monster visions' isn't there? Unless all I ever remember is colourised versions....

I wondered if the lower quadrants a a mesh and gauze arrangement, like a Dalek neck piece?

I wondered if there were bulbs hidden in the base of the prongs, but after watching studying the episodes, I came to the conclusion they were locator plugs for fixing the prongs in place, as there was no evidence that the prongs actually lit up...

Here's the pic I was thinking. Doesn't show much admittedly, but the colour scheme looks quite different to what was on screen

I actually think they were green. The "Destiny of the Doctors" PC game had them as green I think I rememeber?

Yes, lots of me remembering when the whole of time and space, I mean, the internet is out there for me to check... oopsie.

I always thought they were green as well... :D

Thanks, I was talking a look around the site last night, and I completely missed the Quark in the picture there. Its a pity there isn't more to show of it... :-[

I can't link to the actual photo; but its about halfway down in the middle. According to the site it was taken around 1977, at the Blackpool exhibition, by Steve Cambden. It looks greeny silver to me... :)

I think the body colors where a mix of a silver grey and green that had been dirtied up a bit -- I couple of years ago I did a model based on the Quarks and I used that color scheme for the basis of the piece --

Hopefully this will help you with your question --

Enjoy

Now that's a great find! Do you think Steve Cambden would give permission to post that Quark photo here (with proper credit being given to him and his web site, of course) if we asked politely? I mean, if he does, then we'll always have the photo for reference. Remember, there have been sites like this before that have gone the way of the dodo, leaving us with dead links.

I thought of that yesterday, but unfortunately the site doesn't give an email address for him.
