You should ask them for the lens dimensions. Most companies will let you know how large their items are, especially if you're a prospective customer. Then you'll know if the lens is the right size (about 6 inches in diameter, and about the same high, though if this one is a little taller it could be "sunk" into the base a bit, and have the cap made to sit a bit low so it looked the proper height).

I need some help, my mate tom has Tom Baker style flat pack TARDIS and he wants to get a lantern for the top. Does anyone know of an English supplier that would possibly have just the lens? I'm looking to get one as cheep as possible as trying to get money out of him is like trying to get blood out of a stone

After much searching and poking around their website, here's an image of the dimensions of the bollard that includes the fresnel lens.

It measures at 140mm which is roughly around 5.5 inches.

Not bad a size if you ask me and would be hardly noticeable unless you get up onto someone's roof with a tape measure!

I have to agree with you there. That size would work fine and being only about a half-inch or so off, the only way anyone would notice is if you told them, or they did the Adric thing and climbed on the roof to measure it. (And if I caught anyone climbing on top of my TARDIS - if I had one for someone to climb on - they'd get sonicked right off just like the Doctor sonicked that sonic pen out of Matron Cofelia's (a.k.a. Miss Foster) hand when she tried to cut the scaffold's last cable (even if I had to use a long broom handle to help it along!) And then woe be to the buffoon as he bounced on the ground.

Good lens, good price: can't beat that.

My advice is to keep the fresnel lens you've got and to bring in the dowelling rods a little closer - I think your fresnel is the same size as mine and we have roofs of a similar size. It's the top and the placement of the rods that make the lamp look smaller than it should be. Does that make sense?

Possibly thinner dowels as well.  The ones there are a bit on the chunky side, IMO. 

Not a "Fresnel proper", but it does have the shape, and seems to still be available:

It's the largest of this lens (or "chimney" as they call it) they have available. The close-up image isn't the best for measurements, but they do answer questions about specifics rather quickly when you e-mail them. It's worth a shot, and for the price, you can't beat it until you find a proper Fresnel lens.

And if worse comes to worst, would it be possible to router a groove for your current lens to sit in? Or maybe router the outer edge of that circular part to reduce its diameter to your lens would fit over it? (The same for the above lens in the link, that is if it's a little larger than your current lens?)

It seems I may have had my lamp all along!

A long while ago, I saw this beautiful thing at TX Maxx on reduction. Its a glass candle holder, nautical style.



I measured it and its diameter is 7"! about the right size for a TARDIS lamp, but its height is 10" so I will be looking to either cut it shorter (its glass, eeek!) or sinking it into its roof placement. I realise its missing the typical bulbous shape in the middle to be a proper lamp, but it should give the same effect once atop a box.

Thought I'd share here just in case anyone else needs inspiration to find something similar.

I agree... glass? "Eeek!" Sink it into the housing. Glass-cutters aren't all that cheap, and trying to do it yourself could lead to a shattered lens, and that's not worth it. Sinking it into the housing definitely sounds like the best way to go, and it would look the same as it would if it was cut.

"Proper lamp"? Who can really define a "proper" TARDIS lamp when we've seen everything from a Met Box-style with the Fresnel lens to a plain frosted cylinder (even with nothing but a black cap on it), to a rotating blue police car-type lamp to a small anchor-style lamp inside a Met Box-style cover with struts (the Hudolin), to the Gardman of the Series 1-4 box to an Anchor-style lamp to a New Haven-style of the Series 5 on box...?

A "proper lamp" - I'd say it's anything you find appealing to your eye (and wallet) that you put on top of your TARDIS.
