TYJ Window Frames

I'm following the latest PDF of the TYJ plans on this site. I have built a Brachaki box already and worked out the window frame, including bottom step, were 0.75" and the window panes 6.25"x3". All good.

I come to model the TYJ prop and I can't get it to work at all! Looking at reference pics, the outside frame looks much more narrow than the vertical and horizontal cross pieces. What I am also not sure of from the plans is whether the dims of 15"x12" for the recesses are before or after the bevel.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Going by memory (which hasn't been my greatest friend lately) I believe that 15 x 12 is the actual measurement of the recessed panel, and the bevel "flares"outward from there. I hope I'm right; I have no references to check. They're 300+ miles away on my home computer, and every time I try to enter the Reference Section to pull up those PDFs to verify my browser crashes. But I think the above is how things go.

(Bill, I think you may have done one of those PDFs. I know you'll correct me if I'm wrong - in both the 15 x 12 issue, and if that is your PDF. ;))

Okay, that would make sense as the bevel is on the door and not the recess. My only problem there is getting the measurements for the width of the glass panes and the cross pieces to fit into 12". If I go with 3" for the width and 0.75" for the cross pieces it works BUT the outer frame looks thinner in pictures, unless it is partially hidden behind the door but that would mean that the space it is filling is not 15"x12".

There are virtual models of the TYJ prop on the board and they all look spot on, so people more clever than I have sussed this one out! What would be a huge help, as 3D Studio Max bevels in inches and not degrees (!) would be knowing the height in inches of a 22 degree bevel so I can get the recesses right... if that makes sense.

Not me on the plans of the pre-2005 TARDISes.  The ones out there were mainly done by Gene Fender.  However, hopefully these hi-res images can help you in your quest.

Thank you, Bill. I thought the box used in the promotional shots of Peter Davison was the Newbury one redressed. Are the doors the same as the TYJ or have I got that wrong?

DoctorWho8

Peter used the redressed Newbery when they were filming Castrovalva since it was the prop being used.  The redressed version uses the wooden doors made to make the fiberglass molds.  So technically they should be about the same as the fiberglass version. Some of the other promo shots were done with the TYJ prior to the filming of any of Peter's stories.

Right, that explains that! Pity they didn't continue to use the wooden doors.. might have lasted better than the fibreglass! :D

I have bungled my way through with the model. I ended up keeping the cross pieces at 0.75" and the out frame at 0.25". Bevelling out to keep the 15"x12" dims made the sides look too narrow to me so I went the other way and made the recesses smaller. My window panes are 7.5" x 3.08" (that .08 really bugs me, but it was the only way to make it work!)

Hey, if it works and looks good, who's going to argue with .08-inch (or 2/25th of an inch)?

Certainly not me! Your Old Girl is looking great so far.
