I have always dreamt of building a TARDIS console and TARDIS wall interior for fan film use, with the acquisition of seanclarke's console, that's one box ticked. However making the accompanying walls has made me think long and hard and so I plan like to get that second box ticked!!

Obviously TV went with fibreglassed walls, or whatever, on top of a wooden frame etc etc. The fan film guys of Devious went with wooden walls, Chris Hoyle of The Projection Room fame went with wooden walls and IKEA rondels, and perhaps the most terrible (but cheap) way of doing it is paper plates on a pre-built wall, or even greenscreen.

I'd prefer to make something I can pick up and move about and then store for convenience, having a complete wall length (like TV) is out of the question and making anything of fibreglass is beyond my skillset. I liked how member timerotor made the walls for the 80s console in the Experience (http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=2635.0) all in sections tall thin sections and not whole wall sections. Its almost like you could add hinges and then easily folded! What an idea!!

So my plan was to have tall wooden sections much like the Experience walls with hinges and doing it this way, but the thing that concerned me was the creating depth to where the roundels are. And I saw quite a few duct flanges that could create this depth, but all appear to be metal and would make any wooden wall sag.

If something like that worked, the next stage would be about producing more than one wall, perhaps getting the whole finished wall vacuum formed at a bigger scale? or (d'oh!) fibreglass - again, two things that are perhaps out of my league at such a big scale.  Or maybe just the duct ends vacuum formed and therefore only buying one?

Any ideas fellow TARDIS builders?

Well, aside from you being a lucky slob by getting hold of seanclarke's console which looks really cool, for ease of building (and ease on the wallet) you could always consider building Season 13 walls. Basically those can be closely approximated with a 4' x 8' sheet of ply (cut down some, depending on your height limitations) and some of that "press board". (I'm not sure what the exact name of the stuff is, but it's lightweight, thin like paneling, has one smooth side, and the other side has a texture to it. I do know it can be very brittle.)

With half-inch ply, you could just cut holes in it for the roundels (take it slow, and I'm sure your hand will make nice clean cuts), and then back the ply with the "press board" making sure the smooth side faces out. Then paint the entire thing pale grey and you'll have walls a la "Planet of Evil", "Pyramids of Mars", etc., which would go with the look of seanclarke's console rather well.

And just curious, but what were those Ikea roundels you mentioned? Or maybe rather, what did Ikea have that could be used as roundels? This is the first time I've heard of that one!

HA! I think I've seen that video before. At the time I didn't know you'd made it! Nice one, and for a good cause!

And I'm guessing Ikea doesn't make those platters anymore (like they don't make those 'Encyclopedia Gallifreya' bottles anymore). Still, at least now I know what they look like (if I can remember them long enough). I think I've seen similar platters (plastic ones, and clear, not translucent or frosted in any way) at one of our local party supply stores. Various sizes from 6" to 18", so now I'll have to browse there again (and check their prices; the store's gotten quite popular in recent years and their prices have risen to show it).

Thanks for reminding my about that video and what those "roundels" looked like. Looks like the vid was fun to make, and as I said, it was for a very good cause. Also, glad my idea was of some help to you - another option if nothing else.

I have no idea on the roundels at IKEA front anymore, maybe I'll give Mr Hoyle a bell and see what he says. But I presume any flower pot tray/vacuum formed roundel will do - shame they can't be any bigger. The bigger ones tend to be another colour and not clear/white etc.

I wonder if I can find the lips a cheaper way. Maybe vacuum form one and use that, but it creates a having to do a process that is beyond my skills and equipment set.

As wonderful as wallpaper would be, I'd prefer something I can transport around and look good at the same time. Flat roundels on a flat plyboard isn't going to do it for me, or a film - though I'm sure viewers at home won't notice that its just a flat surface completely
