The Southbridge Road Box in Croydon - Z21

On the island at the right edge of photo (from circa 1965) --

A blowup, for what it's worth --

A scan of the actual photograph might yield more details.

Current street view --

A view of the Box Site (Revised) - middle of the southern edge of the planter area on what used to be an island --

I can do better than that, How about a wider angle of the area from the opposite angle?

Much larger images available on the flickr page.

The interesting thing about this page is that the photo is from 1970, and yet appears to have an instruction plate on the middle of the door, instead of below the telephone door.

Well done Starcross another excellent find!

Great find Starcross!

Street view for the new photo --

Southbridge_Road_Box-Z21-StarcrossPic-Streetview.JPG

This shot isn't so much a reverse view as a parallel one down Sourthbridge instead of the original view down South End.

Here is a cropped image of the full resolution photo (1970) --

Southbridge_Road_Box-Z21-(1970)-Orig-cropped.JPG

The additional white areas visible on the two middle door panels could either be replacement panels painted white as primer, or perhaps signage for some non-standard reason - possibly even postings regarding the imminent removal of the Box itself. Very hard to tell from this angle.

Found some more shots from the same source, but these are all dated 1969:

A shot from further up Southbridge --

A true reverse view of the first B&W photo, looking back up South End Road --

Southbridge_Road_Box-Z21-(1969)-sm.jpg

A view from further down Southbridge after the junction, with a fuller view of the Police Box --

Southbridge_Road_Box-Z21-(1969)-Pic3-sm.jpg

Cropped image from the full resolution photo --

Southbridge_Road_Box-Z21-(1969)-Pic3-Orig-cropped.JPG

And finally, a photo taken from right next to the Box looking back up Southbridge Road before the junction --

Southbridge_Road_Box-Z21-(1969)-Pic2ReverseFromBox-sm.jpg

Oh, if the photographer had just turned around and snapped a few!

Edit: Based on these photos I have made a slight adjustment to the Box Site Street View and its URL in the first posting.

A great collection there hb88banzai...well done!
Don't these "Higher Definition" Photographs make you feel that you want to step straight into them.......
Oh okay I'll make an appointment to see the Doctor (no pun attended) ::)

hb88banzai

Yes they do!

Same with the GPO Kiosk.

Amazing how often the Doctor, Inspector Spacetime, and Danger Mouse show up to the same space-time coordinates.  ;D

There are some other odd features to this box the roof stacks look a bit funny.

hb88banzai

I thought so as well, but still not at all sure.

When you zoom in on the high res photos (including the one I didn't post that is a reverse shot on one edge) it is plain there is some background clutter getting mixed in with the rather prominent grain to where it is unclear where the stacks start and stop, but more than a little suggestion that things are fairly normal and just faked out into looking weird.

Not clear enough to determine one way or the other with any certainty - might try some Photoshop on it later to clear things up to see if we can get a better view.

Another photo of this Box, this time from circa 1955 (incorrectly labeled as being High Street) --

Here's another Hi-Res Photo of the box below.....

A blowup --

Southbridge_Road_Box-Z21-(c1955)-(HiRes)-Blowup.JPG

OS maps:

The 1935 OS map should show this Box since it was sited in 1933; however, it either doesn't show it or it has been mislabeled as a "T.C.B." (centre of map) --

Southbridge_Road_Box-Z21-OS_MapExtract-(1935-not_shown_or_mislabled).JPG

It's definitely there on the 1955 OS map though ("PCB" at centre of map) --

Southbridge_Road_Box-Z21-OS_MapExtract-(1955).JPG

This last map also shows the Letter Box ("LB") and GPO Kiosk ("TCB") in the same relative positions as in the photographs.

I can't find this box on here, but I know it is, so maybe it could be merged into the thread

Indeed. That is probably the most prominently featured police box in a photo.  If the traffic divider wasn't there it would be perfect.

[OK, maybe not perfect.  I wish I could see the front a bit better to see if it has a SJA badge.;) ]
