I've had some downtime to go poking around the internet for a few days trying to figure out what to do about this lamp dilemma.  My TARDIS is kind of a skinny new series style, and since it's going to go in my living room, I should probably make the lamp to hold a regular light bulb.  providing I could get hold of some thin bendy pieces of metal, I could just solder the outer cage around a glass jar and add the top and some thin dowels.  I don't really know what my other options are for lamps because it's hard to find picture of the TARDIS that include the lamp on top.  Anyone got any good pictures of other styles of lamps?

Does anyone have any great shots of the steps you took to build a functioning lamp on top?  I've got a receptacle set inside the roof, and a fixture meant for a ceiling lamp to fix on top, which will be partly covered by that short step that the lamp "sits on."  I'll be using a temporary jelly jar for the time being, but I'm wondering what I'll have to do to it when I can afford to order this

Now, I know a lot of you are all fancy and make it blink, but I'd rather just have a regular lamp in my living room.  So I figure what I'll have to is just take out the bottom and set it on top of the fixture.  Right now it's got three screws that stick out, but that's just to hold the jelly jar on, so I think I can remove them.  Does anyone else have experience making a candle lantern into a functioning lamp?

Check out this beautify NST-like lantern, this baby is solar powered.... I don't know how many gigawatts, but a neat idea.  I thought I'd share..
Price is 50.00 US at Home Depot.

Just to note that the height of that lamp is only 5 1/2in.  So it would be too small for a full size build, but more appropriate for a 2/3 or 1/2 sized build.

Has anyone found these lamps on sale in the UK at all?

And rather hope there aren't too many changes in the new series. It's gonna be different enough getting used to young Matt. Keep the tardis interior the same. And I can live with the exterior, though have a preference for the classic, but that's just my age!

Best Wishes to all old friends on here. Sorry I've not been very active (or active at all!)

OH NOOOOOO!  I just got birthday money to buy one from Lowes, and I was having trouble ordering one from the website because my local Lowes doesn't carry it, but I just went to figure out how to get one and they've TAKEN THEM OFF THE WEBSITE!  SO CLOSE!

Is the Gardman lantern wider than the Portfolio lantern?  The specs online said that the Gardman was 7 inches in diameter.  I'm assuming that's at the widest part on the top.  That makes me a little nervous because I've only got a 4"x4" square on the peak of the roof.  For you that have got them, how wide is the diameter of the bottom?

The Garman one that I have is 7 3/8" diameter on the bottom (base).  The top dome is 8 3/8" in diameter.  I hope that helps.

ok, just to give some validity to the hybrids. the tardis is ever changing (here and there) so maybe they can pass as future versions that we haven't seen yet.;) (or is that pushing it,)

When I was looking for a lamp for my build, I ordered one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PY0KC4

Turns out it was too small for a full-sized build, but would probably be ok for a smaller one.

Regards.

Does the bottom come out of that kind so I could put a regular light bulb fixture in it?

Oh, here's a suggestion for anyone having trouble finding a good top for a lamp:  Check out old bird feeders!  I was browsing the hardware store and started admiring the tops of the birdfeeders, since they looked pretty similar to the hat looking tops on the lamps.

I found this one in Fred Meyer a few years ago.
